Once every eight years or so, the two stars swing close to one another in their orbits and their stellar winds interact, and they puff out a cloud of dust like a smoke ring. The shells extend more than 10 trillion kilometres from the stars – about 70,000 times the distance between Earth and the sun. They’re expanding outwards at nearly 10 million kilometres per hour.
