lesson of the day:

I just reada really good fic but halfway through I realized "oh shit this is really familiar.... didn't I write something like this once?" And as I kept reading I kept predicting what happened next and the further I went the more convinced I was that they'd ripped off my story-

like, copied the ENTIRE plot and re-written it, just better than I had? The characters were more fleshed-out than mine were, and the POV was more interesting, and the pace made more sense- but it was MY STORY?

So close to the end I was like "holy shit.. do I message them? Ask if my story inspired theirs? Should I be angry? Flattered?" Cause their tags and description didn't mention me AT ALL, which, sure, it's fanfiction to begin with, but if you're using my work than at least credit me as inspo, right? Just to be courteous?

But I get to the end of the final chapter, and it's not finished, and I'm kind of disappointed cause I never finished my story and I was really immersed in their version now and had been looking forwards to seeing how they tied up my loose ends- so I scroll to the bottom to leave a comment, and.

As a bear who is into other bears, I'm apprehensive but excited about the fandom-wide adoration of Senshi's design from Dungeon Meshi. Fandom of old has a habit of framing older, heavier, hairier men as sex icons purely ironically, but the love Senshi has garnered feels... different. It feels far more sincere and any comments are at worst playful jabs. Why do you think Senshi has captured so many hearts?

Well, Senshi is a well-presented, interesting, empathetic and funny character who is portrayed really really well in the anime, that's really the core of it.

Also, a caring, attentive man who is deeply invested in his hobby and eager to tell you about it, who takes care of your needs and makes space for your eccentricities and who can also cook is the sheets-soakingly horny throbbing center of a LOT of people's erotic imagination. Dungeon Meshi presented that archetype earnestly and without ironic distance or mockery, and people responded.

It also matters a lot, I think, that the show itself takes Senshi and his physicality seriously as something interesting and worthwhile about him. I've written a post about it elsewhere, but Ryuko Kui takes character design seriously, and designs characters with a real interest in their bodies and presentation. Whether or not she meant for Senshi to be sexy, her art seems to take joy from portraying his body as something which it is worth your time to look at and appreciate.

And that's a big point of difference with how not just bear-type characters but all characters in a story are portrayed. A lot of anime treat its characters mostly as clothing racks to hang cool costumes on, and physical difference is only really employed visually as a means of abjection, a means to alienate or separate a character from the norm. Dungeon Meshi largely avoids this - in the visual language of that story, physical difference is the norm, and at least to me, that creates much more of a feeling of non-judgment about how the characters are portrayed.

So Senshi isn't stocky and hairy because ha ha eww look at the hairy man gross, he's stocky and hairy because that's a normal thing to be for him. There's a greater neutrality there, and this avoids passing bias on to the audience, and creates more space for appreciation.

... I think, anyway. I've been awake for like 20 hours and I'm loopy and this sh** is basically just off the dome in a stream of consciousness, I have no idea if any of this makes sense.

One of the first things a novice writer learns about speech tags is that they’re part of the “scaffolding” of prose. They should be largely invisible to the reader: use them when necessary, omit them when not, and be sparing in the application of verbs other than “said”. They serve only the function of clarifying who is speaking when it is necessary to do so.

Except:

Sometimes you might want to use a speech tag in spite of the redundancy. The fact that the reader’s eyes slide right over them is an exploitable property. By slicing a line of dialogue in half with a speech tag, you can force the reader to perceive a meaningful pause between two utterances—and the effect is much stronger than you might get out of an ellipsis or an em dash. Developing an intuition for when and how to do this is a huge part of learning to write dialogue, I think.

(And yes: if you ever wondered, this is exactly same the reason why comic artists sometimes “double bubble” their speech bubbles. Same end, different means!)

What if the hero of the story WAS the prophet that saw the oncoming danger? What if he was a kid tasked with the weight of the world on his shoulders at 19? What if the visions and fortunes he sees keep him awake all night until he learns to calm the storm within? What if the kid is forced to save all the adults that should've fixed things before him?

For his order at Coldstone, coffee for the base. Coldstone is notorious for their strong coffee flavor (they use real instant coffee for it after all), and for a standoffish, straightforward guy like Diluc it would be perfect.

The mix ins match his upper class yet fiery nature. Red velvet cake for class, cinnamon for spice, and dark chocolate for a dark knight hero. Or something. Diluc isn't the dark knight, what are you talking about?

And so, Diluc's signature "Fiery Phoenix", with coffee ice cream, red velvet cake, cinnamon, and dark chocolate is born. I hear Coldstone had a spicy honey as a mix in at one point, maybe throw some in there if you're feeling adventurous!

Genshin Characters as Cold Stone Ice Cream Orders - #3 Cyno

What's up gamers. I know nothing about this man personally, but my friends are adamant that his jokes are funny, so here we go.

Currently there is an ice cream flavor at Coldstone called blueberry muffin batter, so we'll use that as the base. However, this flavor might go out of stock eventually. If that ever happens, cake batter mixed with blueberries are a pretty damn close estimate to what the ice cream tastes like, so do with that as you will.

As for mix ins, graham cracker. Easy, it's sand. Add an oreo in there to give it Cyno's color scheme and shit! Plus some texture, oreos love to soak up that ice cream. You could stop here, but I felt saucy and sprinkled some sea salt on this shit. Levels out the sweetness and through the grapevine I hear this man's just a touch salty? Am I right about that?

Cyno's signature, "Deliscious Devoted Dunes", featuring blueberry muffin batter as the base, with graham cracker, oreo, and sea salt. Let me know what you think.

*REVISITED* Genshin Characters as Cold Stone Ice Cream Orders - #1 Venti

Have you tried a mint cheesecake?

...yeah. Me either.

After trying my previous Venti creation at Coldstone Creamery (Easy Breezy: mint and cheesecake with yellow cake / coconut / white chocolate), I've decided to remake it.

It wasn't horrible! Just felt a little off palate wise and out of character for Venti himself. On to Venti's ice cream revisited for a second draft!

French vanilla for the base. We'll keep it simple. Mint and cheesecake sounded good for him in theory, but in reality it was a little distracting and the flavors didn't mesh quite well.

We're putting apple pie filling in there! He loves apples, I didn't know that about him before. Usually I'm a lore junkie, but I've new to the Genshin scene and haven't dived in fully haha.

Something green for the guy...sugar crystals? Green sugar crystals. I mint was an obvious choice for the green, but looking back on it, Venti doesn't have a minty fresh vibe. Sugar crystals give the more tongue-in-cheek sweet crunch he has going on.

Something to balance him out. The creation is pretty sweet thus far, so the only thing I can think to level the flavor are blueberries. He's got blue hair, yeah! Check that off the list.

I loved the previous creation, I really did, but I could tell another draft was in order. Some parts of it were fantastic (the white chocolate chips were excellent texture), but overall it missed the mark.

Venti's new signature, "Fruitful Gales" with French vanilla as the base, apple pie filling, green sugar crystals, and blueberries seems like it would fit him and our taste buds much better. However, Venti is an elusive little sh*t sometimes and I would not be surprised if we needed a third draft.

Create that Thing™ You Want to Make

Hey you. Be kind to yourself. Honestly, that thing you've been wanting to make is worth existing for. Heck, that thing you're making is definitely worth existing. Take that as you will.

There are people creating garbage right now, and they don't care about it. Because either they will polish that garbage to make art that they are proud of later, or they have no self-respect to make something for more than monetary gain or fame.

You care about that thing you are making a whole lot right? That means it will be close to impossible to have it end up shitty. Your creative work is a dog. You care about this little guy. There's no way he's going hungry under your watch. Show dogs might catch your eye and look pretty. But there's show in every dog. And some dog's owners pretend that everything is perfect when they're struggling to take care of the little things, it's just our nature.

I mean all this to say: Hey. If you needed permission to write, draw, script, or create, here it is. As a wise mentor once told me, raise your right hand and swear that you are about to create the biggest piece of shit possible.

Then create it worry free. Then polish it. Then take it apart and replace some bits. Start over. Do better.

I believe the act of creation is a type of self-care. Allow yourself to care for your being, then shit on an open google doc to fix it later.

All you, and your art has to do, is exist.

did you know that you can just go online and be nice to people? you can give people compliments and helpful advice when they ask? you can encourage people when they need a little cheering up? you can even share cute pictures! more people should use the internet like that.

How to turn off AI Training of your content on Web and Mobile:

On a Web Browser:

I had some trouble finding this option. My first instinct was to click the settings button on the left, but that's where it is!

First, you'll click the name of your blog on the left sidebar to bring it up on your browser.

Then click "Blog settings" on the right sidebar once your blog is brought up. That's where they're hiding it.

Click "Prevent Third-Party Sharing" under the Visibility section, and bam! You're done.

On Mobile:

Thankfully it's much easier on mobile. Just click the Gear icon on your blog's page, to go to settings.

Scroll all the way down until you see Visibility, then toggle the Prevent third-party sharing option for your blog!!

If you disable this setting on mobile, it automatically synced it to my web browser settings, too. ...But if you use both Web and Mobile, I would still highly recommend double checking that it actually turned off on both!!

Check that it's turned off on your side blogs too! And check your settings every now and then anyway to ensure that it's staying turned off, because if my memory serves right, some other websites will pull some shenanigans on things like this and opt you back in without telling you!

Genshin Characters as Cold Stone Ice Cream Orders - #2 Kaedehara Kazuha

Kazuha's was very easy to come up with. A simple glance and his order came to mind.

Sweet cream ice cream base to keep it simple like himself. As for mix ins, raspberries, caramel, and dark chocolate. Simple and fresh, yet slightly esteemed and elegant with the dark chocolate. And a little sweet with the caramel.

And so "Wandering Delight", Kazuha's special is born.

Genshin Characters as Cold Stone Ice Cream Orders - #1 Venti

As summer is coming to a close, I thought it would be fun to make Genshin characters as ice cream. Cold Stone is very customizable, so I went with that as our system of creation so to speak to make each order unique to each character.

Venti or Barbatos, Archon of Anemo will be first.

For the ice cream base, I've devised that a combination of cheesecake and mint would be perfect for him. Sublty sweet, with a fresh flavor to pair.

As for mix ins, coconut, white chocolate, and yellow cake would make a complete package for this boi. Coconut is a fresh taste that pairs with the mint, and is lighter than air similar to the Vent-man himself. White chocolate for his sweet nature, and yellow cake to give a light yet textured flavor for the rest of the dessert.

And so "Easy Breezy", the Venti specialty is born.
