Nervous, excited, slightly nauseated, but mostly nervous was all you felt right now. It was all you’d been feeling since your boyfriend, Sim Jaeyun—or “Jake,” as he preferred to be called—had asked you to meet his family at their yearly summer barbecue.
“Come,” he’d said, “It’ll be fun.”
So, here you were now, on a sunny August afternoon, right in front of the Sims’ residence with Jake’s hand in your sweaty one.
He gave you one last smile before he reached for the doorbell with his free hand.
“Wait!”
His hand stilled mid-air, as he raised an eyebrow.
You nibbled on your lower lip, squeezing his hand. “What… what if they don’t like me?”
Jake made a face, like he couldn’t believe what you were saying, and asked, “Do I like you?”
“... I mean, I hope you do.”
“Wrong!” He flicked your forehead quickly, but quickly soothed the area with a chaste kiss. “I like you very much. Some people would even say I like you an abnormal amount. So, don’t worry about whether they’ll like you or not.”
You couldn’t deny that the feeling of his lips on your forehead and his words made you feel jittery all over, but you could also feel the jitters from your nerves. But, Jake was smiling that wide, boyish smile of his—the one that said that you were worrying too much and everything would be alright—so you gave his hand a little squeeze and nodded.
“You’re ready?” he asked, squeezing your hand back.
Giving his hand one last squeeze, you stared at the wooden door in front of you with a determined glint in your eyes. A smile stretched your lips, and you scoffed. “I was born ready, Jakey.”
Without any hesitation, Jake rang the doorbell and you felt your heart drop into your stomach.
You’d lied.
“W-wait—“
The appearance of a young woman, probably in her 20s, cut you off and you were immediately scrambling to match a name to the unfamiliar face. You couldn’t remember anyone who looked like her, however, from Jake’s impromptu presentation he’d given you of his family yesterday, so you stumbled out an awkward, “H-hi.”
That didn’t deter her, however, from smiling widely and pulling you into a warm hug. You were confused and shocked, but you somehow managed to wrap your hands around her.
Pulling back, her already-wide smile widened even more and she exclaimed, “You’re _____, right?”
You nodded, still confused and in a slight daze. You spared your boyfriend a glance, hoping he’d help you out, but he had a mischievous smile on his face. “Uh, and you are…?”
Her smile dropped slightly before her eyes narrowed in Jake’s direction. “He didn’t tell you about me, did he?”
“Nope.”
She glared at Jake at his response, scowling, but then offered a hand in your direction. “_____, I’m Myeong Soora, Jakey’s next-door neighbour, childhood friend, and first love.”
You’d been nodding along to every single word she’d been saying, until the last two registered in your head.
“What?”

Everything’s fine, everything’s fine, everything’s—
Everything was not fine.
You were on Jake’s backyard patio now, barbecuing some strips of meat and regretting ever coming.
It wasn’t because of his parents. No, they were some of the sweetest people you’d ever met; his dad was a laid back man with a dry sense of humour, while his mum had been practically begging your boyfriend to bring you home more often since the moment you two had hugged. And, it wasn’t because of your boyfriend, either. Even though your eyebrows had been twitching with irritation, and you’d been slipping him glares the entire afternoon, he hadn’t been mischievous enough to cause you discomfort. Despite the whole not-telling-you-his-first-love-would-be-at-his-family’s-barbecue thing. Which, of course, was super minor and not a reason for you to worry and fret, at all.
The first love, in question, was currently hovering around you with a bright smile, clearly oblivious to your discomfort.
A strained smile on your lips, you refused Soora’s help one more time. “Ah, it’s really okay. I’ve got this.”
Out of the corner of your eye, you could see the smile on her face dim slightly—like, literally decrease in brightness—and you sighed internally, thinking she was going to back off. But, then, she perked up and her smile was even wider and brighter than before.
“I’ll go set the table then! Be right back!” She squeezed your waist, catching you by surprise, and skipped off.
Your eyes followed her cheerful figure closely, before you closed the lid of the grill and fixed your gaze on your boyfriend.
Jake was lying on a lounge chair, shades on his eyes, and probably trying to catch a couple zzz’s while his parents were consumed in a tense match of chess. He looked peaceful like this, relaxing in the sun without complaining about it for once and you almost felt bad for what you were about to do.
Almost.
Quickly and quietly, you snuck up behind him and whisper-shouted a deep, “Boo!”
His reaction was instantaneous. One second, he was soaking up the sun rays, like a cat lying out in the sun, and the next his eyes were wide and darting around wildly. His eyes darted to meet yours, simmering with thinly-veiled irritation, and he straightened immediately.
“‘s food ready?” he slurred, sleep still in his eyes. He tried rubbing it out of his eyes but only ended up knocking his knuckles against his sunglasses. Grumbling, he murmured, “If it’s not, could you make what you want to tell me quick, please? I want to go back to sleep. I can already hear my dream calling me, I—”
“No.” You crossed your arms over your chest, a frown pulling at your lips. “Sim Jaeyun, I am giving you the next five seconds to explain why your ex is here at my first meeting with your parents.”
“My ex?” His eyebrows furrowed and he fully sat up now, turning his head to look at your form behind the chair. “I don’t have an ex. And, even if I did, why the hell would they be here?”
It was your turn for your eyebrows to furrow. “What do you mean you don’t have an ex? Soora literally exists, don’t lie to me.”
The crease between his eyebrows wrinkled his forehead further, until he had a visible ‘oh’ moment, and let out a short laugh afterwards. Getting up from the chair, he checked to see if his parents were still absorbed in their chess game, before leading you towards a small, enclosed area close to the shed in their backyard.
Jake cupped your face softly, staring deeply into your eyes, as he said, “Nothing ever happened between Soora and me. She was my first love, that’s all.”
“And, how is that supposed to make me feel better?” you mumbled back, removing your face from his hands. “Your first love is still your first love, especially to your parents. How am I not supposed to worry and think about if they’re constantly comparing me to her, to see if I fit their standard? Doesn’t help that she’s actually here.”
A flicker of understanding flashed in his eyes again, causing him to sigh with relief. “No, _____, when I say Soora’s my first love, I mean like, my first love. Like, from when I was five. We only bring it up because I tried proposing to her as a kid, and she rejected me in front of our entire preschool class.”
Oh. Oh.
You averted your eyes from your boyfriend’s, hot all over—from what you wished was the sun, but was really just pure and utter embarrassment. Suddenly, your flip-flops were the most interesting thing in the world, and staring at Jake was the equivalent of staring directly into the sun.
He spotted your embarrassment and let out a teasing laugh. “Do you really think I’d let you stay here if an ex of any kind was here? Come on, I would never do that to you.”
“Yeah, I know,” you paused, twiddling your foot, “I was just getting ahead of myself for a second there.”
Again, he cupped your face softly, raising your head and simultaneously staring into your eyes. He laughed again, a warm but teasing sound, at your obvious signs of embarrassment. “No, no, no, I totally get it. If Soora was an ex, and I brought you here, that’d be really disrespectful. I would probably flip out and sulk for the rest of the day if it was me.”
You laughed along, a slow smile forming on your lips. “Just flip out and sulk? That’d be a very mild reaction from you for something on that scale.”
“Be quiet,” he scolded, but the smile was still on his face. “I would handle it maturely, like any other adult, excuse you.”
“Oh, really now?” Raising an eyebrow, you slipped your arms around his waist and tugged him closer to you. You feigned a thinking expression, muttering, “That doesn’t sound like the Jakey I know.”
Jake rolled his eyes playfully. “Shut up.”
Your eyes flickered to his lips, as you shrugged. “I don’t know, why don’t you—”
Soora’s shrill shriek interrupted you, and, though everything had been cleared up, you were cursing her in your head for different reasons. That was, until you could make out the words she was saying in her frenzied state.
Your heart dropped.
“The barbecue!”

forget your icon forget your url fuck it forget your blog title. reblog with why is your bio what it is.
no tricksy business, if its just your age and/or pronouns i want to know why are you that age.
To any fic writers who worry they are wasting their time... I read a fic for a relatively small and inactive fandom about three years ago. And there was one specific scene where a character watched another dancing like an idiot to a beyonce song and it was so sweet and loving that even now years later I have that song on one of my spotify playlist so every once in a while it will play and remind me of that fic, and every time it does I smile and feel a little happier.
The stats on a fic will never really tell you if your writing touched someone. There's no numerical way to show you what impact you made. Maybe you are wasting time, or maybe you are writing something that someone will remember for a long time, something that will never fail to make them smile.

DOECHII, crazy
