oh my goodness, one of dian fossey’s first close up observations with gorillas happened when she was trying to climb a tree to see them better, but so badly that by the time she’d gotten up the entire group had come out of hiding to look at her: “Nearly all members of the group had totally exposed themselves, forgetting about hiding coyly behind foliage screens because it was obvious to them that the observer had been distracted by tree-climbing problems, an activity they could understand.”

The discourse around The Ratfish and why Eric's inclusion didn't work for a lot of people (including me tbh, though I honestly enjoyed the hell out of these episodes anyway) put me in mind of this blog about the two different ways of being funny.

Basically, the idea is that there are "jokers," who create comedy from scratch, and "jammers," who create comedy from their interactions with other people.
Dropout is basically 100% jamming-based. Everyone is funny in relation to everyone else.
I haven't seen Eric's stuff, but I know he's best known for a show whose title is his name and another dude's name, so I'd wager he's probably actually a great jammer! (Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I truly am not familiar with this dude's body of work at all.) But in the context of The Ratfish, he was mostly "joking" and not interacting with the other contestants as well as they interacted with each other, which made him stick out awkwardly. As anyone who's been in an improv class knows, one "joker" in a room full of great "jammers" will often come across as rude and antisocial, even though they're usually just doing what they get rewarded for in most other contexts.
I don't think this is necessarily Eric's fault per se, though it is true that past guest stars have understood the assignment better (LaGanja on Survivor is a great example of someone who "jammed" really well with the main cast.)
