HUNTER × HUNTER || Killua & Canary
HxH Translation Tidbit
In the following post I will attempt to explain how Hisoka nearly got himself killed asking Illumi for permission to fuck Killua.
This is the scene in question:

As you may remember, Illumi asks Hisoka to help him in capturing Killua to prevent him from using Allukas powers to help Gon. Hisoka then turns to Illumi and asks him the following:
ところで、僕はキルアをやるのは、ありかい?
Both the manga and anime translate this as
By the way, am I allowed to kill Killua?
Which is fair enough, except that Hisoka never mentions killing him at all. The verb he uses is やる which literally means “to do”. It’s used as a euphemism for killing, but, you guessed it, it is also a euphemism for, well, sex. But how can we tell which one Hisoka is referring to?
Here, his gesture comes into play. Of course, the anime is faithful to the original. This is Hisoka in the manga:

The gesture is even more prominent here.
For everyone who isn’t savvy in Japanese nonverbal communication:
His hand gesture appears to be セックス (sekkusu), lit. Sex. It’s used so you don’t have to actually bring sex up in a conversation, but still make it clear that you’re talking about dirty stuff. Usually, this gesture requires the thumb to stick out between your middle and index finger, but this version is sometimes used as well. Since HxH appears in Jump, they might have had him change it as a form of censoring, but that’s just me taking guesses.
(Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fig_sign)
On the Japanese wikipedia site for this sign it says that the thumb represents the penis, and the index and middle finger represent the vagina, it is possible that for this reason Hisoka chose the middle and ring finger instead, since Killua is a male.
In any case, it is clear that Hisoka is using this gesture to communicate to Illumi that he is talking about dirty stuff here. The fact that his words could mean both things work in his favor. He probably just said that to provoke Illumi, anyhow.
And that’s how Hisoka nearly died because of a stupid joke.

The way the Zoldyck family treats Alluka/Nanika is oddly close to the way some families treats a child a mental illness or a neurodivergence.
Nanika is “something”, something they can’t reach, they can’t control, they can’t understand. It appears suddenly, just like a crisis. It obeys to certain rules, and reccurences. It’s out of control, but it’s not a chaotic force.
But it has a strong destructive potentiel. Nanika can destroy the whole world. For abusive/controling families, a mentally ill and/or neurodivergent child can destroy their world, destroy what they care the most for : their appearance, the illusion of a perfect family, according to social norms they chose to follow.
The roles are reversed. The parents watch over the child for their own safety, not the child’s one.
So they hide them, they limit their activities, their interractions with the outside world. Their needs are denied, but because the illusion must remain, the parents provide for needs the child doesn’t have. For example, by filling a room with dolls and plushies.
The child is deshumanized. They’re just a body who has to act a certain way, say certain words, to please the parent. They’re just the inconvenience, the mental illness, the neurodivergence, the thing.
Then there is this other relative. An uncle, a grandma, a sibling. Who doesn’t see the child as a thing, but see who the child would have been if they were neurotypical.
This is why the scene where Killua asks Nanika to go is so important. He wants to protect his sister from what makes her different - makes her a target for abuse. But Alluka is clear : she can’t do that. She doesn’t want to do that.
“Love as a whole, or no love me at all”, this is what she could have said.
You didn’t escape from abuse if you came from conditional hate to conditional love.
And Killua proves her both he loves them unconditionally.
They escaped.
This is so close to the journey of so many mentally ill and/or neurodivergent kids in abusive/controlling families, it can’t be a coincidence.
Killua and Alluka and Nanika
The reason Killua knows the rules for how Alluka and Nanika works?
He asked her. That’s it.
“I asked for her to tell me how to turn her eyes back.”
Killua asked her, and he listened to her, and he respected her rules about herself.
(Hint hint hint if the gender identity connection wasn’t clear enough by now.)
That’s all. He’s the only one to ever talk directly to her, and ask.
