"I couldn’t help shaking the feeling that with Harsha and Alyssa Weaver and Dmitri Teplov and others, there’s this sense that we as a community have a responsibility to each other. When one of us falls to the dark and can never return, there’s a certain sense of responsibility that I felt and still feel, and I don’t know if it’s the right thing to feel."

There was a yellow plastic radio on her kitchen table, usually turned to the polka station, though sometimes she'd miss it by half a notch and get the Greek station instead, or the Spanish, or the Ukrainian. In Chicago, where we lived, all the incompatible states of Europe were pressed together down at the staticky right end of the dial.

"Part of the appeal of being a leader, I think we can agree, is to be noticed for something you are passionate about. We want to be a public leader, someone who flaunts and babbles, when the desire to be noticed exceeds the costs of wasting time flaunting and babbling. But, if you're the leader of a large and organized group, you'll have to waste a lot of time babbling. It wouldn't be right then to demand that everyone should take the lead all the time.

We often call people 'leaders' when they spend time connecting with others in a campaign and convincing others to participate in them. And their work is just as important as a public voice; causes live and die based on continued action, not just on one cool PR campaign."
