Um. Sorry to be walking in the back door with N*ilman tea, but it’s so whack that prior the show he’s constantly been telling us that Crowley and Aziraphale aren’t canonically gay. But now all of a sudden he’s constantly reblogging stuff or replying to stuff saying explicitly that they are I?? It’s almost like he’s joining the bandwagon just to be accepted or smthn like that. Anyways, just a thought I had, and I know you hate this too

and yes. I completely agree and think it’s completely out of order. Ling covered all of my feelings about this pretty brilliantly and concisely in this great post but yeah this kind of stuff absolutely infuriates me. he does not get to spend 30 years refusing to acknowledge the romantic elements of aziraphale and crowley’s relationship, then refuse to make it canon/explicit in the tv adaptation, and then take to twitter and try to make himself seem supportive of it because he realised his cast and crew played him and no one can read it as anything but romantic anymore. he KNOWS he looks like the asshole by refusing to talk about it. that’s why he’s suddenly on board with the idea. he thinks it’ll make him look better and/or more woke by doing this. but it doesn’t. it just makes him look like a queerbaiting piece of shit who was too cowardly to bite the bullet and make what everyone regarded as such anyway explicitly canon after denying it for nearly 30 years, and then retroactively reassure everyone that they were correct in their completely understandable interpretation that aziraphale and crowley are a couple after the fact. which is EXACTLY what he is. you can chalk up a lot of queerbaity elements in the show to just michael and david taking the script in a different direction to what was intended and no one stopped them. you can argue that it was their fault that people interpreted their relationship as romantic, and I wouldn’t blame you for reaching that conclusion. but this here that n*ilman is doing on twitter? it is completely blatant queerbaiting in service of trying to save his own ass. it’s the EXACT SAME SHIT jkr has been pulling for years now, the kind of shit she’s been torn to shreds over, and yet I don’t see the same kind of outrage over n*ilman’s conduct. which honestly really shows how he’s got this fandom wrapped right round his finger.

(also I’d like to add that as a cishet man he does not get to decide the labels placed on aziraphale and crowley. his excuse for them not being gay is that they are genderless beings, but come on, it’s 20 fucking 19, LGBT labels and identities aren’t that fucking black and white anymore. and saying they’re not human is not a get out of jail free card for people very rightfully interpreting two relentlessly gaycoded characters as gay. it really shows that he has no understanding of nor any interest to learn LGBT identities and what exactly defines “gay”. nonbinary gay people exist. regardless of aziraphale and crowley being human or not, and thereby conforming to a gender binary or not, viewers are going to take this shit at face value, and if two male-presenting characters are in an explicit on-screen relationship, that’s going to be read as gay and treated as gay representation. the fact that they are also gnc on top of that would only further the level of LGBT representation, not reduce it. his efforts to bend technicalities of language over backwards to make it so fans can’t call aziraphale and crowley gay is honestly really disgusting and I’m sick of cishets thinking they get a say in what actual LGBT people think of and see in characters and media as a whole.)

lmao I mean other than that, and keep in mind that this is a lot of personal preference as well – I obviously don’t speak for everyone although a lot of my friends do see this the same way – n*ilman’s conduct in fandom really rubs me the wrong way. He’s an accomplished writer, he has a very big, very devoted following. A Lot of people treat his words like law and as if he’s ~God~ or something, and he knows this.

And yet he’s like… idk it feels like he’s too familiar with the fandom, borderline unprofessional, even. Or, you know, extremely unprofessional in some cases: when he jumped on a random joke post to make A Point About How You Shouldn’t Pirate Or Whatever (like lmao you think I can read??? you think I care about his opinion when he’s a world-renowned writer and sicced an Entire Ass Fandom on my friend’s post because he felt slighted and needed to Go Off to preserve his dignity or whatever power trip it was that he wanted? Fuck off, mate.)

Other than that, he’s been capitalising off of gay readings of Good Omens yet always insisting that “[Aziraphale and Crowley] are not gay” or some such nonsense. The only reason why he’s been tweeting and reblogging all these reviews about Good Omens being gay/a gay love story/whatever is for clout and so people will give him credit where credit isn’t due. If I had read the script book before I’d seen the show (and yes, sue me, whatever, I got to see the show three weeks in advance – it’s out now. @amazon if you’re gonna kill me at least do it honourably, and let’s settle this with a good ol’ fashioned sword fight.) I wouldn’t’ve thought it would be nearly as gay as it turned out to be.

Michael and David really brought the script to another level, they played the characters as gay and in love, they’re the ones who actually made that happen. The soundtrack also helped a lot with making it look as gay in the show. N*ilman had always maintained it was just platonic, and the script really doesn’t read as very gay at all. That isn’t to say that there weren’t some very gay bits, but saying n*ilman wrote them as gay, giving him credit, making it seem like “he’s giving us rights” or whatever else I keep see people saying… It’s honestly a reach.

Furthermore, in case it wasn’t already clear: I have no respect for him as a person because of his conduct in fandom, but as a writer as well, like… I only appreciate him insofar as he is the person who co-wrote one of my favourite books of all time, I do not respect him as a writer, because he can do better but refuses to. This isn’t about “oh boohoo you stupid sjw gays want everything to be canon and explicit!” It’s about the fact that he could’ve gotten international recognition and acclaim and be even more of a beloved figure than he is right now just by biting the bullet and saying, yes, Aziraphale and Crowley are gay, and they are in love, and I’ve written that into the show.

Imagine thinking views and money are more important than giving fans representation, some of whom have been a fan of the book since it first came out, who saw themselves in the characters you helped create and without whom you wouldn’t even be here today. Imagine being so self-absorbed and proud that you cannot – or, no, will not – in the year of our lord 2019, make a pairing that’s been widely believed to be canon anyway explicitly and indubitably canon. The show does an admirable job of making it as explicit as possible without outright saying it, and I am happy with what we do have, but we shouldn’t have to settle for scraps anymore when series like Sense8 and Brooklyn Nine-Nine also exist.

Now my last point is this: Death of the Author. I’ve said it before, but fandom is for the fans. N*ilman insinuating himself inside the fandom as the ultimate authority on what is or isn’t canon, what is or isn’t okay, what he thinks on subject x/y/z? I don’t goddamn care for that at all. It takes away the fun and the magic of fandom. He’s said his piece, he’s done his Thing, now his work is up to us to interpret and make new content for and discuss and pick apart and put back together in whichever way we like. Him ~graciously allowing~ us to write fanfiction doesn’t have to impact us one iota. In fact, that’s the bare minimum of what any decent content creator should “allow” so as not to be seen as a complete and utter bastard. And anyway he’s pretty uhhhhhhhh disparaging about it too:

Anyway as you can see: “One step up from fanzines,” and we all know how that’s meant to be interpreted! So it’s kinda annoying to see people praise the living daylights out of him for being the bare minimum of a decent popular content creator, yet he pulls shit like this.

Also I know I said that would be my last point but he also said he’d do better when adapting the book to the tv series yet still…. left in the g-slur. If you’re gonna promise that, yet leave that in, and also be condescending about sex workers (I can go on and on and on about how much I dislike the way Madame Tracy is treated but I’ll spare y’all), then I really don’t care about what else you have to say, you know?

Unless he puts his money where his mouth is and writes Aziraphale and Crowley as genuinely in love and explicitly together (so not just a season finale cop-out kiss; I’m talking cuddling in bed and walking around in each other’s clothes, kissing and hand holding and calling each other partner/boyfriend/husband and, hey, you know what? Let’s throw in some non-explicit sex scenes as well, since Anathema and Newt got several.), you couldn’t pay me to give less of a damn about his opinion. I wouldn’t hold out hope though – he’s been denying this for almost 30 years, after all.

When I am dealing with really bad brain fog and someone asks me to do math because I’m the youngest person in the conversation (and I guess that means I’m the dedicated math problem solver?) I just say “I don’t do math.” And man. Let me tell you. I have never seen grown adults get so annoyed and angry over a simple statement. It sparks joy. So, next time someone asks you a question that you can’t answer because of brain fog… just follow my example. “I don’t do —” it is so simple and lovely. No one knows what to say. I don’t do science. I don’t do geography. I don’t do that. I’m sorry. Ask someone else or fucking google it. I don’t know.
