The winners of the IgNobel prizes were announced this week during a ceremony at Harvard University. This marked the 22nd year that the world’s most improbable research was celebrated in hilarious prize form. They are even presented by actual Nobel Prize winners!
Here are some of this year’s highlights:
Psychology: “Leaning to the left makes the Eiffel Tower seem smaller”
Peace Prize: Conversion of old Russian ammunition into diamonds
Neuroscience: Demonstrations of the limitations of fMRI analysis, AKA “Brainwaves in a Dead Salmon”
Literature: The U.S. Government General Accountability Office for producing their report calling for reports on the cost of reports.
Fluid Dynamics: For study of the unique spilly-sloshing that occurs when a cup of coffee is carried while walking.
Full list here. Scicurious is digging into the awards in detail on her blog.

Some street art found on the walls of Haifa, Israel.
I like your post with the Haifa street art! I know some basic 'Bic so here we go: in the first one with the read background it says "Al-Massalla" though I'm not sure what it means, maybe it's the street name? The picture with the poster of the hand says "Ayrbii" meaning like Arab. The one with the couple kissing says "Hhob mashlii" which I believe roughly means wonderous love. (A phrase with the same root is masha allah, meaning thank God for beautiful things.) I hope that helps! Thanks again!!
Thanks so much for the translation! You’re wonderful!
I've heard/seen some Telsa-coil-music, but so far I've seen nothing as impressive as this display. Rather than using a buzzing noise to punctuate the music, this musician/inventors Eric Goodchild and Steven Caton actually play the coils by "by modulating the number of sparks that emit from the coil each second," therefore "different tones can be produced by the coils."
The House of the Rising Sun" is an American folk song, though this particular rendition closely resembles the classic Animals cover.
I definitely would have cuddled with this at night with the rest of my stuffed animals.
