Thyroid is latest success in regenerative medicine
A series of achievements have stoked excitement about the potential of regenerative medicine, which aims to tackle diseases by replacing or regenerating damaged cells, tissues and organs. A paper in Nature today reports another step towards this goal: the generation of working thyroid cells from stem cells.
Sabine Costagliola, a molecular embryologist at the Free University of Brussels, and her team study the development of the thyroid gland, which regulates how the body uses energy and affects sensitivity to other hormones. Their research shows that thyroid function can be re-established even after the gland has been destroyed — at least in mice. If the same technique could be applied to humans, it would help the roughly 1 in 3,000 babies born with deficient thyroid activity, or hypothyroidism, which can result in stunted physical and mental development.
Essentially, the researchers grew working, hormone-producing, physiologically responsive thyroid from a few stem cells, implanted them in a mouse model, and then high fived.
“Do not assume I know nothing of late 19th/early 20th century footwear fashion!” Tom spat.

Hey guys. I have something for you.
See the guy above?
His name is Paul Broun - a Republican U.S. representative, member of the United States House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.
But more importantly, he is a creationist. Broun does not believe in evolution and embryology (yes, you read that right - he does not believe in embryology).
This came out of his mouth:
“All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and the Big Bang Theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of Hell… And it’s lies to try to keep me and all the folks who were taught that from understanding that they need a savior.”
Need I say more?
Fortunately, you can try to remove him from the committee. A petition has been started on change.org to request Broun’s removal from what should be a committee to innovate science, scientific research and development, and space exploration.
You can sign here - and please, it takes only a minute.

SACRE BLEU A colored honeycomb from a beehive is seen in Ribeauville, France on Oct. 5. Local beekeepers have observed bees returning to their hives carrying bluish- and greenish-hued substances — believed to be residue from a nearby plant processing M&M’s — causing the unnatural colors of honey. i really hate it when people say you shouldn’t use the computer or watch tv before going to bed and instead you should read a book because you need winding down time or you won’t sleep. ha ha good one do you know what happens if i start a book before bed?!...
