Regulus tried to quit the Death Eaters and Sirius KNEW!

I am deep, deep in canon at the moment and I just realised something important that I forgot was canon about Regulus and Sirius Black.

In Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 11, Sirius says:

“There were quite a few people, before Voldemort showed his true colors, who thought he had the right idea about things… They got cold feet when they saw what he was prepared to do to get power, though. But I bet my parents thought Regulus was a right little hero for joining up at first.”

“From what I found out after he (Regulus) died, he got in so far, then panicked about what he was being asked to do and tried to back out. Well, you don’t just hand in your resignation to Voldemort. It’s a lifetime of service or death.”

Sirius also says his brother was “murdered by Voldemort, or on his orders more likely,” when Harry asks if he was “killed” by aurors. Murdered implies an assumption of some level of innocence, rather than Harry’s use of “killed” which implies the death was justified.

Then, in Half-Blood Prince, Chapter 6, Remus says:

“I’m surprised he (Igor Karkaroff) stayed alive for even a year after deserting the Death Eaters; Sirius’s brother, Regulus, only managed a few days as far as I can remember.”

They knew that Regulus wanted out when he died! Both Sirius and Remus were well aware of this fact, even if they didn’t know how Regulus died. They sought out this information, it wasn’t common knowledge. Sirius didn’t know that his brother died on the mission to take down Voldemort, but he did know that his brother wanted out. It’s no wonder he’s so reluctant to attack Regulus’s memory.
