Hi! I don't know if you've answered this already but if you haven't please do! What existing systems of beliefs and myths did you draw from to create the magic system in the world of Umbra? I love the complexities of the world you've created and super grateful that you've shared this piece of your imagination with the world.

most of the inspiration for umbra's world building is based in norse mythology. names like niflheim, vanaheim, helheim all come from norse myths (i think everyone is familiar with the 9 kingdoms myth thanks to thor lmao). most of the magic creatures also derive from norse myths. honestly, jrr tolkien made the blueprint and now it's really hard for anyone that tries to write fantasy to stray away from it!

as for the magic system!! basically i took a little bit of inspiration from the inheritance cycle series (eragon), and mayyybe a little bit from the chronicles of the kane. in both series words have power to make spells, the difference is that in umbra's magic system you can only make spells if you're speaking an ancient language (esp. dragon language). also, not every word can become a spell. there's specifics.

there's many more things i don't remember rn lmao but!!! i tried really hard to "create" my own rules regarding the magic system. the thing is, as i mentioned earlier, it's really hard to stray away from the usual fantasy tropes, so many things are actually pretty generic - mostly bc this is a romance fanfiction and i didn't really dive deep into laws and rules. honestly, i feel that the magic system is quite messy as umbra is right now bc many things were not thaaaat well explained (again - it'd be irrelevant to the story rn). i've been rewriting it for some time and readjusting some things that didn't make a lot of sense in my head. maybe if someday umbra becomes a proper published book things will get clear✔️
