Humanity never expected to be the center of a holy war.
It started a few centuries after they had finally discover they weren’t alone. Two whole human centuries, in fact. They last war had happenned a long time ago, its remains confined on their libraries and museums. Humanity called this “The Last Human War”. A conflict so bloody it ravaged the entire planet and left them almost hopeless.
Almost. The precise word!
So, after that, they put their heaviest weapons on display. Buried, yes, buried, the blueprints of their deadly inventions on the deadliest of deathworlds, things worse than Earth itself. Hidden inside dirt and fire and teeth, there laid horrors beyond anyone’s physical comprehension. Humans and their tricks! If anyone ever found those blueprints, they would hardly live for more than a few months with it.
Some humans trained their entire lives for this job. Deadly biological machinations, who crafted their bodies around the mission of not letting anything like the past happen ever again. These ones were called the Flesh Machinations by many, feared by all treasure hunters who have a drop of sense inside their minds.
Humans called the Flesh Machinations “babysitters”. For them, they were simply, and I quote, “stopping children from discovering what the power plug tastes like”. Many joked about how, if all their plans went wrong, they would “go babysitting”.
Well. The kenrenken were know for not taking things too seriously, and for being one of the few species to always understand human sarcasm and jokes, but somehow they decided that “I think i’ll babysit” would be the perfect thing to be taken literally.
The kenrenken shared some similar things between their religions. That thing being that one (or more) god(s) created a beautiful machine, a thing made from the constructs of Heaven itself, to serve and look after the kenrenken. But, after a tragic incident, the machine was lost. Or broken. Or revolted and ran away. Or…
Well. What matters is, the machine was gone. Forever! Bye-bye!
On the other side, there was the noidsem. Big, warrior type, could easily break a human in half if it wasn’t for how uninterested in violence they were. Like the humans, the noidsem had a great war that tore their planet apart and changed their species forever.
But, while humans restored their planet before going to space, the noidsem did not. They spent years and years finding things to help their home before finally restoring it.
Nedless to say, the noidsem and the humans had a pretty close relationship. Even closer than the kenrenken, in fact!
That stopped when the noidsem decided that the humans were the devil, actually.
Their most popular religion depicted bad and cruel creatures to be furless, bone-like creatures with broken teeth and only two working eyes, because the rest was blind. These creatures wore lances and were capable of trickery to do their evil deeds, and would hunt a noidsem for days on end without getting tired, if said noidsem had a thing they wanted.
Well. A group of noidsem looked at the Flesh Machinations and thought “wait a minute, this sounds familiar. Too familiar”, and convinced a rather big and influential group that these humans were the devils of their religion.
Of course, the majority of the noidsem didn’t like this. They hated this! They had human friends and even family members. Unfortunately, when a single powerful group becomes fixated on an idea, that idea will be executed, no matter what.
Propaganda spread like wildfire. Humans had to flee many of their homes shared with the noidsem, and many of them died during the first few months, when things were rather quiet and everyone was convinced no war would occur.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the galaxy, what did the kenrenken said when they started to do some religious studies with humans on their side?
“Wait a minute, this sounds familiar. Too familiar”.
Then, they heard about a noidsem elite attacking humans and convincing everyone that they were evil.
The kenrenken looked at their holy books.
They looked at the humans.
They looked at their books yet again.
They looked at the humans.
They looked at their mighty weapons.
“Hey, everyone! You know what would be a good idea? WAR!”
The humans blinked, and BAM, the kenrenken and noidsem were attacking each other, for the kenrenken had to protect the holy machinations of their god(s), and the few noidsem who were participating on conflict had to protect their people from the evil humans.
Well. You are a human, aren’t you? You know how evil war is. What a devouring, crooked, devilish thing it is. If all evil took form, it would be one of war. But for these humans, hundreds of years in the future?
The Last Human War would have been the conflict choosen to represent all evil that ever existed.
They know evil. They know the claws it uses, for they themselves had made it. They know what manipulation is, how greed acts on the mind. They knew what the noidsem elite was doing to the rest of their population, and they knew that the kenrenken were resulting to weapons resembling too much like evil’s claws.
The humans were in a panic. The rest of the intelligent species feared the Flesh Machinations would, at any time, go to the burial sites of their blueprints to take them out to end this war. Many were fleeing the solar systems humans were residing in…
However, they had forgotten the human name for “Flesh Machination” was “babysitter”. And when the kids are fightning and hurting each other, what does a babysitter do?
In this case, an emergency and diplomatic meeting.
The noidsem arrived with a heavily-armored group that could easily kill everyone in the meeting. The kenrenken were wearing weapons that screamed “THIS IS MADE WITH PURE POISON THAT COULD END YOUR EXISTENCE IN A MATTER OF SECONDS”. The human ambassadors, however, carried the deadliest thing of the bunch:
An experimental hologram that did nothing but make a show with images, sounds and wind.
Oh, my bad! That wasn’t the deadliest thing, no, no, no. It was what the hologram had inside of it, and what was shown to the meeting. “You two do not want war”, they told everyone, before showing the hologram.
To this day, five years after the war ended, the contents of the hologram are not allowed to be shown to anyone. Only reproductions of it that were carefully made and edited with the goal of not killing anyone with fright on mind.
You probably guessed what the hologram showed.
The Last Human War.
I was allowed to see it. Take a peak at it. I was lucky the wind option was disabled, or I’m sure the for-extra-effects wind would have blown my head away, and I prefer to not describe the contents of it to you. I remember the shades of red, the blood, the explosions, worlds and places full of life
Both sides of the war looked at the humans, after the show of the worst horrors ever witnessed was gone.
“You had major wars before”, the human ambassador said. “But nothing like this. And you will never have anything like this, because we won’t allow you to do that”.
Nedless to say, the warrior did not fight back when the humans attacked them. In fact! They gave their weapons to them and sat in silence, overwhelmed and terrified. “Are you the devil?”, a kerenken asked, trembling.
“That’s a good question”, a human responded, soft. “I wish I could answer that one”.
Both sides of the conflict were escorted to their ships, carrying blankets and food for their starving troops. “We hope to hear from you soon”, the humans said.
“Are you an angel?”, a noidsem asked.
“That is also a good question. I wish I could answer that one”, a human said, giving them a heavier blanket. “Here. For you”.
After that show of horrors and tricks made to make the scene even more terrifying, the war ended rather peacefully. No holy crusade, no trickery, no anything. Humans asked for reparations, and helped both sides on the aftermath.
Humans were, after all, the oldest species out there.
