Okay so I've had someone new follow me today and checked out the blog like I usually do. I felt like the vibe was kinda off, but then again not everything is for everyone, I know that. Part of the pinned post was this tho:
which made me pause. Sure you can have age preferences, but why specifically "target" (for lack of a better word, English isn't my first language) just about legal/very young adults when you yourself are close to 40 y/o? So I decided to ask about it.
Again call me sensitive if you want, but I've learned to trust my intuition and all my instincts were screaming that this reasoning sounds off. If those are the responses you get from women that have had some time to adjust to being an adult and develop their values and sense of self and what behaviour they tolerate, I wonder how you're behaving towards them. In my experience and observations the younger you are the more power imbalance these large age gaps inherently come with. And if that's something both parties, but especially the older one, aren't explicitly mindful of the more potential danger they bring with them. And to me that answer sounded uncomfortably close to "I'd rather do what I want with someone I know will get along with it without question". I'm not implying he doesn't get consent btw but I'm curious how informed that consent is/can be. Also there's a difference between choosing to allow interactions as long as everyone's of legal age and specifically seeking out that age group.
Could I have phrased that first part a bit more neutral? Probably. But I was emotional. Here's the answer:
I take issue with the following:
I'm not saying age gap relationships are inherently bad/dangerous but there's a way to go about them and a way to discuss them and I personally think this isn't it.
Not everything that is legal is moral as well. And again it's moreso the HOW than the WHAT.
Why are we bringing child marriage into the conversation? I thought we weren't discussing minors but adults.
Is not finding what you're looking for in people closer to your own age a valid reason to specifically seek out teenagers/young women?
I'm not trying to downplay or disregard the impact being sent to war and fighting has on people, I would argue tho that handing a teenager a gun and sending them to war doesn't make their frontal cortex finish developing over night but rather makes them traumatized teenagers/young adults that are forced to make decisions and face horrors most adults never face in their lives. There's a difference.
I did actually not have space in my upbringing to be immature nor do I watch porn with age gaps that make me uncomfortable, but that's beside the point.
I'm not posting this to be a bitch, but because I think maybe someone needs to see this today. We keep talking about being responsible and making sure we're safe and looking for red flags but when do we ever show HOW to check what someone says to us, how to name how it makes us feel, how to check it against our own personal moral codes and values? If this makes at least one person listen to their instincts when they feel like something is off and keeps them from getting hurt it's worth it to me. I know I could have used this when I was younger.
