You are sleeping peacefully when your phone buzzes, vexatious and monotonous. Like any sane and reasonable person asleep at this time, you ignore it. Correction, you try to ignore it. The person calling you doesn’t give up because your phone continues to buzz and buzz and buzz. Fourteen calls until you pick up. Slamming your hand on your phone, you jam the accept button without opening your eyes to know the caller. “What?” you snap.

“Wake up, sleepyhead!” Oikawa’s animated voice sings through the speaker, way too excited for this hour. “Look out your window, darling~!”

“Go to sleep, Tōru,” you grumble. “Please?”

“Look out the window,” he insists, and you can hear the pout in his voice. “Please?”

Sighing, you climb out of your sheets, groggy. Opening your window, you look down to see Oikawa. You close your eyes, imagining how shitty you look with your messy hair, eyes barely open, and in pajamas. But when Oikawa sees you, he practically lights up, waving his free arm. “Oikawa Tōru, I swear to god…” You squint at his waving hand. There is something rectangular in it. “Are those matches?”

“You bet,” he says proudly, grinning widely under the street light.

“Is it someone’s birthday?” you ask, leaning against the windowsill. Then jokingly, “Or are you planning to commit arson?”

You see him frown, confused. “How did you know?”

You pause, pressing your lips together. You admit you prayed a little. “Which one is it, Tōru?”

“Um. Both?” Tōru raises his shoulders apprehensively, tilting his head.

You pull the phone away from your ear to check the date. August 13th. Dammit. “Tōru, no.”

“What?” He chuckles. “I haven’t said anything yet.”
