𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦. annie was always so good, just pleading with her to always do the right thing, always wanting to see the best in everyone. always so fucking hopeful. it seemed like a lifetime ago when she had had the same thought process, now she was just bitter and angry at homelander, at vought, at annie, at the fucking world, at herself. she didn't say 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 to her because she didn't have anything to say. what good would it do either of them? words weren't going make this better for either of them. annie wanted her to stand up, to fight for them against homelander and vought, but she had lost all of her fight and she didn't have the energy to do it anymore. every time she tried to fight him, she lost everything and she couldn't lose annie, she refused to lose annie. even if refusing to fight alongside her meant she would lose her in a different way, but if it meant that she was still alive, then that was good enough for her.

" 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐚𝐲? " maeve sighed, taking another drag of her cigarette before looking over at annie with an unemotional look on her face. she didn't get why she was so 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 on trying to do the right thing. annie was always going to be the best of them, but it also could be the thing that could put her in the most danger. as much as she wished she could help, maeve didn't want to keep going up against homelander, they were never going to win. running a hand through red strands of hair, shaking her head as she looked away from her because she couldn't see the look of 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 on the blonde's face, " there is nothing you can say that's gonna make me change my mind, annie. i won't fight him, " she took another drag exhaling smoke before looking over at her again, a dark look in blue eyes as her anger reaches a boiling point, " i saved your fucking life over and over, but you're so insistent putting yourself on the line to save people who don't fucking matter! " maybe it was all the years of being around homelander for her to have that atittude, but she also didn't think that annie should be consistently putting herself at risk like this. no one was going to thank her for it. no one would even remember her if she got herself killed trying to do the right thing.

𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐭, considering how much she had been drinking, it was a miracle that she even could stand up right now. moving towards her, blue eyes fiery as she looked at her, " if you think i am going to stand you and watch you get yourself killed, think again. i won't do it. i can't do it, " the last part was whispered almost like she was scared of saying it or it even be heard. she wasn't good at this, being honest with her feelings and she had a good reason to hold back now. annie had 𝐧𝐨 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚 what homelander would do to her if he knew what maeve felt for her. his jealousy and possessiveness was still ever present, a threat on every kind of meaningful relationship she tried to have in her life. the last thing she wanted was for this fight to reveal the one thing she had been trying to keep safe and risked her losing everything, " i can't stop you if this is really what you want to do, go with your little twink friend and get yourselves killed trying to fight him. but i can't keep saving you if you insist of running head first into danger, so good luck but get out, i can't do it, "

CLAUDIA DOUMIT as VICTORIA NEUMAN THE BOYS | S04E01, Department of Dirty Tricks

You want me to just suck it up and do this for you? You have no idea what you’re really asking. You have no idea what I’ve been through. Every single word that I say up here, I’m reading from a script. I didn’t write any of these words. I don’t even know if I believe in them. I mean, I believe in God, I love God so much, but… honestly, it’s… it’s just how goddamn certain everyone is around here. I mean, tickets start at, what, 170 bucks, so that these people can tell you how to get to heaven? How do they know? How does anybody know? When the Bible was written, life expectancy was 30 years old. I mean, I’m not so sure you’re supposed to take it literally. It also says that it’s a sin to eat shrimp. What, if you’re gay or if you’re Gandhi, you’re going to hell? I mean… And if you have sex before marriage, that’s, that’s not immoral. That’s human. What’s immoral is the guy who shoved his dick in my face. Here’s the truth. Anyone who tells you they know the answers is lying. And I know, I know, I’m supposed to be this hero-idol-symbol-whatever, but I don’t know what the hell I’m doing. I’m just as scared and confused as the rest of you. I’m done pretending, and I’m done taking any more shit. | ANNIE JANUARY/STARLIGHT IN THE BOYS (SEASON ONE)

𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐬𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝? like she felt she had to be careful with everything she said, but at the same time she wanted to be honest with him in a way that she wasn't with anyone else. homelander was her boss, but she also felt like there was so much more to him than what was shown to them. she had watched all the documentaries and films, she knew what vought wanted everyone to 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 about him. but knowing what she knew now, she couldn't help but wonder how much of it was real and how much of it was made up. he was the biggest mystery and she didn't know how much she could ask him. not yet anyway, or maybe not ever. she highly doubted he would tell her anything, but he had such a way of drawing her in, making her more curious and yet there was something else under all of that. yet she couldn't quite figure out if it was good or if it was dark, or a combination of both. he was the hero that everyone looked up to, the leader of the seven and yet there was something else, she just couldn't figure out what.
𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐬𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞, she had managed to intimidate her into a wearing a costume she hated and she didn't exactly feel comforted by anything that woman said to her. everything was always said with a tone that made her feel like 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 she ever said was sincere, it was all nonsense and what she thought would work.. knowing she was that way with homelander as well, it wasn't exactly comforting to know but it made her feel a little less alone, which was all she had been feeling from the moment she had come to new york. her expression 𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬 as he speaks about the recent plane crash, she couldn't imagine experiencing something like that, " it's fine, don't apologise. you should be allowed to talk about it, you were trying to save them, " annie looked up at him as he patted her hand, feeling a blush come up over her cheeks as he calls her a good girl. get it together, annie, that's your boss. she just took a deep breath and let herself be led out of the tent with him, knowing that if she had gotten noticed prior before, it was going to be nothing in comparison to walking alongside homelander.

𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠, the way people swarmed to them when they saw the two of them together and she had to tell herself to smile and wave at everyone. it was homelander, he had so much draw and power, people just flocked to be close to him as if they could soak up some of his power. but as she looked up at him, seeing that smile on his face that she was used to seeing on the screen and yet it was almost like he was 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐯𝐞 all of it. instead of letting it all overwhelm her, she figured why not just embrace, soak up some of the light that just seemed to radiate off of him. annie looked at her mom as she approached, trying to resist that urge to roll her eyes at him, just willing her mom to not embarrass her. of course, her mom would see this as a good thing and she would so many questions, about why she didn't tell her about homelander and when did they get so close. questions that she wouldn't really be able to answer and it was the kind of thing that drove her insane. her mom was also thinking about how she could help her look 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 rather than what was best for her. she had been trying to let her mom know that things felt different since they got here, but she wasn't listening. her mom never listened to her.
𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐡, she just stayed quiet, her mind wondering about what he was going to say since he had told her that he had no intention of saying whatever stillwell had given him. annie could only imagine what power his words would have if his presence made people just crave to be near him. brown eyes look up at him as he moves closer to her again, hands moving over her arms and she was again grateful to be wearing her old uniform as she was fully covered. but she felt somewhat 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 under his gaze. she was hanging on every word as he spoke, everything he said seemed to send a spark through her because he was right. stillwell had already threatened her with the seven, what else did she really have to lose? if she lost the seven by speaking up about the truth, surely that would be worth it, right? she couldn't keep up with these lies and she couldn't shake the feeling that was something was 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 about everything that was going on.

𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞, not taking much notice of her mom, ashley or anyone else, she was just as focused on him as everyone else. the way the crowd responds to him, he had to be aware of the power he had over them and how they were hanging onto every word. but so was she, even if she didn't agree with everything he was saying, she couldn't look away apart from to look at the reactions of the crowd every now again. if this was him fighting back against vought, it was powerful and it was inspiring in a way that she wasn't expecting. would speaking her truth really be so bad? would it finally make her feel better, gain her some respect that she feels like she never had? homelander was really something else, she had never doubted his power, but this was something else entirely. her heart was racing in her chest and she almost felt like she would 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐭 it if she just did what was expected of her. after he was done on stage, she couldn't take her eyes off of him, almost feeling a little in awe of what she had just witnessed, " that was really incredible . . . i've never seen you like that before. it was a little intimidating but also, " she wondered for a moment if her honesty was dangerous, but she didn't see the point in holding back since he clearly wasn't, " inspiring, "

𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐬. there was no fear or hesitation in the way she approached him, it was almost casual like they had spoken thousands of times before, but he had barely even looked her direction since she had joined the seven. yes, he had approved of her joining seven, had watched all her tapes and she had just seemed so pure, so good, but there was something else, something else that made him think there was a lot 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 to precious little starlight than meets the eyes. was she really as good and pure as she pretended to be? was she more than the sunshine and pure light that vought were trying to make her out to be? homelander couldn't tell what it was about her, but she had a way of drawing him in and maybe he should be giving her more time than he had before this. head tilts as she admits to believing in all of this, blue eyes narrowing a little as he takes her in, all blonde hair, curves and legs, but still somewhat hidden by that 𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 costume of hers.

𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭, though it was harder to pay attention to what she was saying now that she was closer to him, her scent taking over his senses and her voice, she was like a fucking siren calling him in. he tensed for a brief moment as she touched him, not expecting it at all, but it made him pay more attention to what she was saying. clearly she wasn't just the good little girl who believed in the lord and saviour, there was a 𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 there and her way of looking at things had him hanging on every word. starlight was a lot more than he ever gave her credit for, if this was her way of thinking, they were a lot more alike than he had ever could have expected. but she was right, he knew he didn't need stillwell or vought, he had the real power and he shouldn't have to answer to anyone, neither should she or any supe.
𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐭. the dark look on his face clearly told her that he wasn't pleased about the interruption and she immediately cowered away. he loved the way she immediately dropped her act of being in charge when she saw him, a constant reminder that she had absolutely 𝐧𝐨 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 when it came to dealing with him or anyone else. looking back at starlight, a smile pulling at his lips, " i think i found a good reason to stick around for a while, " he admitted with a playful wink, absolutely intrigued about what she was going to say, curious as if the honesty she had just shown him was what she was going to take to the stage. homelander was sure that the speech stillwell had giving starlight was probably just as 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜 as the one he had been expected to give. stepping towards her with a charming smile, offering his arm to her to walk her back towards the stage, " though i don't think you need any more makeup. you're perfect . . . isn't she, ashley? " homelander looked back at her, the dark look returning, enjoying the way she scrambled to agree with him, stepping aside as they moved towards her. she really was so pathetic, just like all the humans at this ridiculous expo.

" 𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐢 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭? " homelander admitted, looking at her with a curious expression as they walked together. she really was and she definitely had caught his attention now, " the whole ' i'm so pure and innocent ' act really must have people eating out of the palm of your hand, " she had her own way of gaining power, a completely different way from his and yet it was going to work, he could feel it. he may have underestimated her when she joined the seven, but he was not going to make that mistake again, " whatever you're going to say out there, starlight, make it count because no one is going to forget you afterwards, " homelander stopped, turning to look at her once more, not caring about anyone else around them right now. they could wait till she was 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 for them, not the other way around, " i'm very much looking forward to hearing what you have to say, "
