for ted lasso fans who aren't football fans, the akufo league subplot was pretty directly inspired by the april 2021 announcement of a proposed european super league founded by 12 of the richest clubs in europe competing in a closed group against each other plus 8 other teams tba.

the enterprise was cancelled very quickly after its announcement, but the differences between how that played out in ted lasso and the story as it played out in real life are.....hmmmm interesting choices to say the least.

the esl wasn't proposed by a cartoonishly villainous ghanaian billionaire. it was launched by a c-suite of white european and united states billionaire businessmen/team owners. - real madrid president florentino pérez spearheaded the proposal and claimed CEO position with andrea agnelli (owner of juventus), joel glazer (owner of man u), john henry (owner of liverpool), and stan kroenke (owner of arsenal) making up the rest of the proposed executive board. -these five are worth $2.3B, $13.5B (agnelli family), $4.8 (glazer family), $4B, and $12.9B, for a total of 37.5 billion dollars.

the esl proposal was formally announced on 18 april 2021 and by 21 april all 6 epl founding clubs had publicly announced their planned withdrawal from the league. this wasn't because of a rich white lady giving a heartwarming speech to a room of other rich people, it was because of a mass movement of working class fans denouncing the move as the capitalist greed and exploitation that it was, with some calling for fan ownership of clubs entirely:

an image of a large group of fans protesting the european superleague. one holds a sign that reads 'SUPER GREED'. other signs read 'fans not customers', 'chelsea fans against the superleague - football is nothing without fans' and 'save the bridge' with other signs not fully legible. in the foreground are the backs of the london metropolitan police standing in a row.
a banner made by protesting liverpool fans that reads: 'love for the working class game ruined by greed and corruption! RIP LFC. thanks for the memories' the Es in greed are replaced by £ symbols.
protesting fans hold a banner that reads 'created by the poor; stolen by the rich'
a handmade cardboard sign is attached to gate with the manchester united logo on a wall behind it. the sign reads 'the big six: 1. cash, 2. dough, 3. money, 4. dosh, 5. wonga, 6. bread' the e in 'the' and the s in 'six' are replaced by £ and $ respectively.
a handmade sign on a stick reads 'fans before finance: all fans aren't we'
a crowd of fans hold signs to protest the european super league while a line of london metropolitan police stand in the foreground. the signs in focus read 'football belongs to us not you' and 'don't let the greed of the 6 kill the passion of 60,000,000'.
a large group of fans protest the european super league. the signs they're holding read 'football belongs to us not you' and 'european super greed'
a group of arsenal fans stand on a staircase outside of the emirates stadium to protest the european super league. a fan is holding a lit flare while a banner draped on the balustrade reads 'fan ownership now'

i get using real events as inspiration and adapting them to fit a narrative purpose within the story, but i think it's worth it to know what the story line was based on, especially considering the specific racial and class changes that were made reframing the villains and heroes of this particular story.

My first reaction once the credits started rolling after the finale was "I hate this". Then I rewatched it and it came down to "I don't hate it as much as I thought". And now I've had almost a week to sit with it and I've started rewatching the whole thing (currently ending s1) and I have to say, I was wrong.

It's not only a good ending, but it's the only way it could have ended. The issue I think a lot of us faced with regards to the finale, was a conflict between what the show is and what we made it up to be in our heads.

The show is about a man who never allowed himself to set roots in England. He's chronically on his phone. He drops everything when Henry arrives in s1. He almost drinks himself stupid because he isn't with Henry for Christmas in s2. He openly questions what he's still doing in England in s3.

He has made a lot of friends in Richmond, but he never allowed himself to get too attached, which I think is at least part of the reason why he never got a proper romance plot. And that's not to say that the love of a friend is less than the love of a romantic partner, that's bullshit. But, in most cases, the kind of love you find in friendship is one that survives long distances with only text, video calls and the occasional visit.

Anyone who has lived in a different country for a limited amount of time (myself included) will tell you that that's exactly how this goes. You meet great people and you love them and it's different after you go back, but that doesn't mean you love them any less. And phones fucking exist, you keep in touch as much as you can.

The show I made up in my head, for whatever reason, was a show about a man who found his home in England. Why did I think that, you ask? I have no earthly idea. It's clearly not how Ted's character is presented. Maybe I thought it'd allow for deeper relationships between characters? Maybe I thought Ted would find romance? Maybe that's what I've been conditioned to think by every other show I've ever watched? None of which is a reflection of the show itself, only of my expectations.

In the end, it all worked out. Not how I thought it would, nor how I hoped it would. But it worked out exactly how it was supposed to.
