My favorite trope for SVSSS fics is when SQH lacks self-confidence/worth and, let’s be honest, has depression. It feels like it adds so much more depth to this character.

When writers have it so that we know he created this world but has such little regard for himself. Where he’s written to see himself as a disloyal coward—sure, he spied on the sect and yeah, he’d run from a fight—but he forgets that he almost died for Mobei-Jun. That he helped Shen Yuan with his plant body. That he gave LBH that terrible yet effective advice. I like reading that SQH is reliable when to really counts. (And he’s also a total badass but that’s a different post.)

I love fics that pick up on that. Like, seriously, give me that angst.

An I.V. line hooked up to his hand. What in the? Shang Qinghua felt the cotton in his head expand even more as he took in the fact that he was lying propped up in what was clearly a hospital bed, in a hospital room, with hospital equipment hooked up to him. How much did he have to drink last night?

It does not take a genius to know what it means when you ask a servant where your lord has left to and they readily supply the name of an exclusive brothel in between the two realms. Especially when it's after your utterly disastrous first time together.

So he goes away for a bit to clear his head. And promptly gets kidnapped
