An older Finnish word: ylen

This is a word that was still widely used in the last century. That's why it's important to know if you want to understand older texts!

Meaning: a lot, a bunch, very, too much, etc.

ylen kaunis = todella kaunis = very beautiful ylen niukasti = hyvin vähän = very little ylen suuri = todella suuri = very big

Also used in some compound verbs, for example:

Antaa ylen / ylenannattaa = oksentaa, oksettaa = to throw up Katsoa ylen = ylenkatsoa = to disdain Ylensyödä = syödä liikaa = to overeat

There is also a special combination, ylen määrin, which might be the most common out of all of these and might also be used even to this day. It means "too much, in excess".
