I once had an idea for a Starbound fanfic but I never got around to it because I lost interest in Starbound (the game by ChuckleFish).
Basically, the main character is a dumbass Human whose only skill is cooking and was accidentally given a plot device, leaving him hunted by an evil eldritch race. While escaping, he meets a super cool but hotheaded female Apex engineer who escaped from Miniknog and is a wanted criminal. They would then go on adventures and meet up with other crew members including:
A female naive Floran with a romantic idea of adventure who is also not very bright and has a grotesque fascination of raw meats. She is basically the glue that holds the crew together.
A conservative Hylotl prince who dislikes Florans due to the Floran-Hylotl war but would came to care for the female Floran even to the point of saving her from execution on his home planet. All honor and stuff.
An prideful Avian pilot who claims to be the best pilot in the galaxy and has an egotistical cocky attitude, but a soft side underneath. He also shares a rivalry with the Human, believing that he’s best suited as captain.
A funny Novakid who was originally hunting the Human for a bounty but has a bipolar disorder so he joins when Human cooks him something good that makes his mood nice.
A socially-awkward Glitch that wonders what is love. It tries to figure out but read too many R18 books and so just spouts out sexual innuendoes whenever possible. Since it likes to read, it has an encyclopaedic knowledge of everything.
So this ragtag group would travel across the galaxy and do cool shit. There’d be arcs too like:
Hylotl Prince is forced to return to his planet due to his brother’s coronation ceremony and never told anyone. So he just leaves a letter of resignation. The crew try to figure out why and visit his planet but are almost arrested, especially the Floran Girl. He meets up with and is forced to watch over their stay until the coronation is over. Floran Girl accidentally finds out a plot by the Hylotl nobles to restart a war with the Floran race. She tries to warn everyone but was then captured and unfairly judged to execution. Hylolt Prince fights a tournament to save her and wins but was hit by some deadly venom. To save his life, Floran Girl gives him a passionate kiss, sucking out the venom which doesn’t affect her due to her biology. They fall in love and stuff :D
Novakid now lives with them but no one is happy because Novakid is weird and has no sense of personal space. Human tries to ease everyone (since Novakid was sent to kill him) but everyone is slowly getting fed up with him. Novakid explains that they have a bunch of memories jumbled up because like actual stars, Novakids are born from remnant of other Novakids and so they inherit some memories from previous Novakids. When the crew gets attacked and Human is kidnapped, Novakid infiltrates the warship and skilfully executes everyone and save Human, showing how much of a badass he is. Everyone then warms up to them and Novakid doesn’t show much interest and continues to act weird but secretly enjoys their company.
Avian and Apex have an argument on who gets to pilot the ship. Avian claims to be the best pilot but this ship belongs to Apex and she doesn’t like people touching it. So to figure out who gets to be the pilot, Human proposes a set of challenges and whoever has the most points win. The rest of the crew have fun putting up various ideas and the two battle it out. In the end, they have a flying race to see once and for all who gets to pilot but both ships crash due to infighting. Apex works on rebuilding a new ship using whatever parts she has, but Avian feels useless since he’s not doing anything. After fixing a ship, the two fly back but are attacked by enemy ships. She doesn’t want Avian to fly for her but relents when their lives were on the line. In the end, he outmanoeuvres the enemies and heads back to the crew and later, Apex allows Avian to be her copilot.
Just posting this here because the idea never died and now I can finally let it rest.
In a pinch, Novakids can set their fists on fire and punch people in style. Captain Noble does this whenever he gets the chance.

also, sketchy sequence of events regarding why an apex rebel ended up sticking around as an official vaporwave space cop. alt dialogue: “oh man we have gotta get you a badge so i dont have to keep arguing with miniknog over the phone”

Reflective. The Glitch from Starbound had tone indicators down to a SCIENCE and I think talking like them would be neat actually.
I think the reason starbound is such a love-it-or-hate-it game is that the gameplay is just okay, but the vibes are fucking immaculate. Zooming the camera out to watch hundreds of multi colored stars float by, shining your flashlight down an abandoned lab corridor so the next shambling mutant can't get the drop on you, walking across the quiet ocean floor with only the occasional oshroom to light your way, the tension of venturing underground without a map, the quiet horror of realizing that wasn't a ruby you just mined but a chunk of flesh and there's a whole lot more where that came from, watching the sun rise on the crops you've been tending to all night, deploying to a space station and giving fleeting hellos to npc's living lives not unlike your own. There's something so special about it, some deep rooted magic. I hate this game, as we all do, but I love it so much more

I personally love all these colorful lights! but I also love playing as florans and I don't think they would like anything hylotl related

Big motivator to learning how to program is purely to make this mod or separate (obviously free) small game happen

ho hummm .. putting your hands where they're not supposed to go will likely feel strange, friend !! I think itd be warm, if a computer program can feel temperature. like a hug, but just for your hands. there's probably nothing modeled inside the glove itself to save on model storage space, so kinito's hands are the gloves !! if you put your hands in it, then it's just a new way to hold your hand !! it's intimate, it's sweet, a little weird, but it's warm and wonderful because it's you, friend !! imagine if you draped yourself over someone in a loving embrace .. it's like that !
