*~*~*

Lady Kirigan was the opposite of her husband, or so all claimed, sweet and soft when he was dark and cruel, a healer when he was a shadow summoner. She followed her husband everywhere, as his personal healer was the widely accepted answer but everyone knew it was because he didn’t dare let her out of his sight, too frightened that something would happen to her. She was harmless in battle, often cowering behind her husband and his soldiers, only healing everyone with her gentle touch after the battle.

“She is powerless without her husband,” Maria and Nadia had told her. “You would suit a man like General Kirigan much better, as powerful as you are.”

The air of fragility that she carried around her certainly made that believable, which was what embolden her to kiss the Darkling. What could his wife do anyways, as harmless as she was?

She was the epitome of a lady that even the Fjerdans would be hard pressed to find fault in and yet, Alina couldn’t believe what was happening in front of her eyes now. With a simple flick of her wrist, Mal, the three stowaways and Zoya were all on the deck.

Alina screamed and Lady Kirigan turned to her. “What?” she asked, with cruel amusement shinning in her eyes and her lips twisted in her cruel smirk. It fitted her features so well Alina wondered how anyone believed that her gentle demeanour was real. “They aren’t dead. Yet.”

“Moya milaya,” Aleksander, no, General Kirigan gently admonished, although he sounded more amused than anything. He wrapped an arm around his wife, tucking her against his side. She was dwarfed by him, so tiny and fragile against him.

“Unless moy gospodin wills otherwise?” Lady Kirigan asked, peering under her lashes at her husband, looking as if she was asking for a treat and not the execution of five people.

Alina had believed that Lady Kirigan did not know of her husband’s ambitions, of his crimes and yet, here she was, willing to kill for her husband even as he utilised her abilities to expand the shadow fold. She had believed that Lady Kirigan was a fragile lady in need of saving, and instead her cruelty matched her husband’s.

Watching Lady Kirigan tucked under her husband’s cloak, Alina is taken back to the first time she saw her. Atop his black warhorse, she had looked so very tiny and nearly childlike, even more so when he swung himself behind her, wrapping her in his arms and his cloak, nearly hiding her from sight.

“No, zolotse, they may still prove to be useful,” General Kirigan gently told his wife, his eyes softer than Alina had ever seen as he brushed a gentle kiss on her forehead.  Lady Kirigan pouted, causing her husband to chuckle before he captured her lips with his own.

Watching them ardently attempt to devour each other, Alina whimpered, her last shred of hope that perhaps General Kirigan may be in love with her dying an agonising death in her chest. They pulled apart, smiling lovingly at each other before Lady Kirigan pressed a soft kiss to her husband’s chin.

After pressing another kiss on her husband’s chin, Lady Kirigan turned to Alina. “Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about you. Why don’t we have a nice long talk about you kissing my husband?” Lady Kirigan cooed with a malicious smile.
