If Trump wanted to stage a fake assassination attempt, his people would have gone a lot harder to make sure the alleged shooter had - or at least seemed to have - actual leftist ties. A dude who donated to Democrats once and then later on registered as a Republican doesn't exactly paint a clear, unambiguous enemy here.
The simplest explanation here is that Trump's people were incompetent, and the shooter just wasn't that great a shot. We're talking about a college student versus the guy known for being an incompetent clown who surrounds himself with other incompetent clowns. There's no deep mystery here.
