A Guide to Fanfiction Tropes and Genres:

🟪I made this cuz honestly, why not lol. For people who are beginners to the fanfiction universe. For anyone who wants to get a glimpse of what this world is like and the common themes used in this "off-the-wall piece of literature". Could be for research purposes or for curiosity, or maybe you want to start writing stuff but not sure what things you might use. No matter who is reading this, I hope this guide helps you.

--I also made this for myself, as a lil handbook to look at while categorizing the fanfics i collect in my blog.

🟦There are genres/topes/themes which you won't be seeing much or any at all particularly in my blog; but I wanted to add them to the lists anyways because they are widely used in fanfiction. I tried to include the main, most common things used in fanfics. Because in reality, the possibilities in a fanfic are endless.

--Many of these are self explanatory so I didn't add extra info to most of them.

This may be used by other fandoms as well. Since this is a Jungkook based account, he is used for some of the examples. You can replace him with anyone you wish to write/read about.

If an author removes their work from AO3 you do NOT have the right to re-upload it. It does not belong to you. It was removed. You do not have the authority nor ownership to decide what happens to it.

I am getting genuinely incensed by the amount of works I'm seeing being re-uploaded by so called "fans" because it was removed by the author. Does it suck that a piece of work you enjoyed was removed? Absolutely.

But its not your right to decide to re-upload it. If the author removed it, they did it for a reason, and they shouldn't have to fight you for the right to decide that they no longer want that work available to the public.

"But they can just let me know they want it removed!" Newsflash. They did. When they removed it in the first place.

The day that you understand that fanfiction has no literary/value difference to published literature and writing is the day you will understand exactly why readers and authors need a symbiotic relationship in fanfiction media just as much as the published author and their reader.

Right now, you have unlimited access to free literature.

I don't think a lot of you fully grasp the actual, true meaning of that. You are accessing literally as much content as you want, that you have had to do absolutely nothing for, for free. And often on a single website that you are also accessing for free, and don't need a hundred and one different kinds of log-ins or passwords or paid subscriptions to access.

If I want to read a specific type of story, I don't have to spend gas money to go to the bookstore that might not have the story I want, or funnel money into a blood corporation like Amazon to access it. I don't even have to pay someone for the time and effort and skill it took for them to write it.

I can go to my search bar. I can type in 'AO3' and I can access 141 variants of the same story for free and all in less time than it takes for my morning coffee to brew.

I am accessing content that cost these authors literal hours of their lives. Their time, their skills, their research, all for free, and I have to do absolutely nothing in return for it.

We take this kind of freedom and resource for granted, and even more so the people who actually enable us to have it in the first place.

Writers who talk about wanting engagement aren't being greedy, needy or selfish. They're not writing just for the 'clout' or whatever kind of half-cocked accusation you want to make. They're asking because engagement is what fuels more content. More community fulfilment. More productivity.

A lot of writers write for themselves, but they also write because its something they want to share with other people. Its a contribution to a shared interest. Its longevity to the enjoyment you experience within that space. Its a continuity of a limited source.

So many people sneer at fanfiction authors who offer commissions and it genuinely makes me want to rattle them all like a marble in a bean can.

Because you pay for books. Because someone took the time to write it. You don't sneer at the rows and rows of books in stores. You don't demean the authors who spent literal hours, sometimes even decades of their lives writing them.

People who write fanfiction are still authors.

Fanfiction is still literature.

Fanfiction's existence depends entirely on the authors.

Appreciate what you have. Understand the value in what you are being given.

Basic gratitude and respect is by far the absolutely minimum you should be giving in exchange for quite literally all the free literature you could ever want, on demand.

We have 31 days of excellent whump prompts, with three prompts per day to pick from, fun themes, and 10 alt prompts to play around with. We hope you enjoy! Additional info + plain text versions of the prompts can be found under the cut.

FAQ and Rules

What sort of content can I create for this event?

You can create whatever you want (fic, art, edits, etc). Any fandom is allowed, as well as OC stuff. NSFW is allowed, but please tag your content accordingly! The only thing not allowed is AI-generated content.

Do I need to make 31 things to participate?

Oh heavens no! You can make as much or as little content as you like, skip days when desired, or combine prompts (so for example, write something that covers a prompt from day 1, 2, AND 3). You don't have to do the days in order either, go wild! To be considered a 'completionist', you only have to make sure that at the end of the month, you've covered 31 prompts from 31 different days, but whether you do that in 31 works or just 1 is up to you.

What are these alts about?

If none of the three prompts of a particular day are your cup of tea, you can swap them out for an alt prompt of your choice.

What are these themes about?

Just a little bit of extra fun for the mods. Like last year, we'll be handing out various badges for people participating in the event. The Discovery Of Something Wonderful

Anyone else discover an author after reading one of their stories and then feel bereft after you've consumed everything they've written and realize there will be no more?

For me, the joy of having read their work at all outweighs the sorrow but I've found if I let some time pass I return to the stories and read them all over again.

It creates this bond between reader and author as I do so, imaginary perhaps, but a bond nonetheless. I think about the author a little more with each reread: what were they thinking as they wrote this passage, or imagine them giggling or crying as they wrote another. With famous authors (looking at you Ms. Jane Austin) we have historical records, but with fanfiction authors (save for the few that have gone on to commercial success), most of the time we have but tiny glimpses into their world, occasionally replies to comments w/online sites such as AO3 etc. (which I love)

So I would say to them, keep writing, please. Keep your privacy if you wish, for I understand the world today is weird and wild on the web, but please keep writing. For perhaps someday a year, two years, a decade or more from now someone will read your work and that rabbit hole of the world you created will live and the characters come alive in their imagination and another bond that reaches across time and space will have been forged.

I'm reblogging this as an encouragement to those creators out there, the artists, the writers whose words inspire us to feel the range and depth of emotion and all of the messy wonderfulness that humans possess.

Keep going friends, send your beacons into the void. Voyage into space despite the harsh conditions and leave your works to twinkle like the stars that they are. Space is vast, and the time and effort may seem futile, but your labors of love are never in vain.

Searching for a Harry Potter FanFic. Help?

I'm looking for this Harry Potter fanfiction where Harry has a creature inheritance. I think it was a fox, maybe a wolf. There was this OC Man who also has a creature inheritance passing by the Dursley's and he found Harry being abused. When Harry had his creature inheritance he was temporarily blind and deaf (I don't rememberr what creature he was but I remember that he had ears and a tail). The OC Man was part of this Reverse Harem with the one that has everyone's affection is an OC Girl who is the only submissive one. The rest (I don't remember how many) were all dominants. There was at least one female dominant in that harem. Now the OC Fam wanted to adopt Harry and the OC Man who found Harry went to Gringotts and made it happen. There was even that one time where they went to a market and met a Love Interest #1 (he might not be the first to appear cause I forgot so don't take this numbering as a timeline) who is very big very bear-ish but is actually very sweet. Love Interest #2 is an Elf guys who's fascinated with how Harry can speak parseltongue (Not actually sure if he's an elf but I remember he has like someone who likes him and doesn't like Harry, thinking that Harry is inferior to them.). I think in the market he also got an egg for a pet? Or maybe a familiar. It might have been a reptile. Love Interest #3 is actually Fred and George. While Love Interest #4 is actually a family member (brother maybe cousin. All I know is all his Love Interests are males) of one of his Dad's. I think Snape is also involved as a love Interest but not totally sure. I'm not sure if this is acurate but I remember there being a sash or smth like that where Harry can put like the symbols or marks of his Love Interests to show that he is also interested or smth and they can like court him. And that the color is symbol (submissives color are silver I think). I'm not sure if this story has been updated but this is the knowledge I have so far if this story. I hope you can help me find it, I've been searching for so long. I don't even remember how I found this fic.
