Brushing Teeth - Tumblr Posts
to add to this post, i personally also had issues with brushing my teeth 1) bc i'm autistic and the bristles felt bad but also 2) since i don't have the best co-ordination in my arms i was using too much strength when brushing my teeth which meant that i was scraping 2 much at my gums and my gums would bleed basically every time and a dentist had to explain 2 me what i was doing wrong, personally what i found helpful is getting one of those silicone 'U-shaped' toothbrushes, w/ that in mind tho they r usually meant 4 rly little kids so it probably works better if ur like me where ur proportions r smaller than most adults (im 4'9 and mostly proportional 4 reference) if u r gonna get 1 tho i would recommend *not* getting one of the electric 1s since a lot of the electric 1s hav harmful 'teeth whitening' features, just get 1 of the 1s that isn't electric (they do exist i hav 1) 4 me this also helped bc i didn't hav 2 move my arm in as many weird angles 2 brush my teeth, just side to side bc the shape of the toothbrush takes care of the rest with that, also the silicone doesn't hurt my gums, also just bc a lot of the time it's not made clear, u don't hav 2 use foam toothpaste 4 those things u can use regular toothpaste and it works just as well if u don't wanna use foam toothpaste, the only thing i will say is make sure ur getting 2 the teeth at the back but 4 me personally i haven't had problems w/ that but idk if that might b an issue 4 ppl w/ bigger mouth proportions than me hope this helps some1 :)
I have trouble taking care of my teeth because everything that involves doing that is a sensory nightmare. I decide to do some research to see if there's anything I can do about this. The results?
"How to make your autistic child brush their teeth"
"Autistic Children and Sensory issues relating to tooth brushing"
"How to get your little shit to brush his fucking teeth"
Like, yeah Google, thanks, that really helps. And like, even if I was a child, some of the advice seemed... unhelpful. Like, doing a dance and singing a song while brushing your teeth? Even for a kid, I don't think that would help distract from a sensory experience as intense as brushing your teeth. Like, the extremely intense and unpleasant flavor, the intense feeling of the brush against your teeth scraping across it, even mouthwash has such an intense and disgusting flavor that I have difficulty keeping it in my mouth for more than a few seconds. I wish there was SOMETHING that could be done.
