Captain Rex x Jedi!Reader: Droid-Crusher

This is the first chapter of my oneshot book, which was originally posted on Quotev. You can also find it on my Tumblr, ersatz-ostrich.

Captain Rex X Jedi!Reader: Droid-Crusher

[A/N]: Here we are with our first oneshot—starring the one and only Captain Rex! I hope it isn't too bad for my first oneshot in this book. The next oneshots will get better as I go, I promise!

Summary: You are a Jedi Knight battling droids on the field with Captain Rex, Anakin Skywalker, his Padawan Ahsoka Tano, and the rest of the lauded Torrent Company. Unfortunately, during a skirmish against some B1s and Commando droids, you lose your lightsaber. The circumstances don’t leave much room for you to comb the battlefield for your lightsaber, so you decide to get creative.

       Warnings: None, canon-typical violence.

The chaos poured from all sides of the battlefield. You were utterly surrounded by the cacophony of blaster fire punctuated by deafening explosions and the sounds of blaster bolts hitting their targets. Before you was a sea of battledroids, waiting to be turned into shrapnel.

Grinning at the army before you, you ignited your lightsaber and dove at the wall of Separatist droids.

The battle reaches a deadlock. Clones from one side battled droids from the other, but neither could gain much ground.

“General, we can’t afford to lose men in the opening phase of the attack! I need you to take out that cannon on the ledge.” The voice of Captain Rex, commanding and sure, crackled onto your comm.

“Copy that, captain. I’m on it.” You start towards the ledge, rending a path of molten metal on the way. The ledge was a small piece of work—you had to figure out how to get up while being shot at. Eyes darting around, you found that your best bet was to hoist yourself up a lower ledge, clear the gap between the two pieces of rock jutting out between that ledge and your destination, and leap on over, using a little bit of elbow grease and the Force.

Your robes were a blur as you scaled the shorter ledge, leapt from one shelf of rock to the other between the adjacent ledges, and landed with a whoosh at the top of the highest ledge, where the cannon was releasing a barrage of fire down onto the roiling battlefield.

Blood pounded in your ears as you dashed towards the mountain of metal that was the cannon. You readied your lightsaber for the strike that would end the torment from above for your troops. Like those of a predator, your eyes were fixated on your target—perhaps too fixated, for you failed to notice the shout of a B1 from your peripheral and the charge that was flung your way. The charge’s beeps tore you away from your objective, forcing you to think fast.

Years of training kicked in; you harnessed the Force to redirect the charge’s path from straight at you to the cannon before you. There was one small problem, though—you had been standing too close to the cannon when the charge detonated.

“Oh n—” You couldn’t even finish your sentence before your reflexes fired. You leapt back from the radius of the explosion and the flying shrapnel that would surely turn you to ribbons without your Jedi training, but the impact still knocked the wind from your lungs and sent you plummeting over the edge of the outcrop and back into the battle below.

You scrambled to save yourself, cushioning your fall with the Force and tumbling to a stop among numerous bewildered battle droids.

“Wow, a Jedi!” Exclaimed one B1 with as much interest as a droid could express. “Wait, a Jedi?!” That interest didn’t last. You found their blasters aimed at you, which was not an unusual sight at this point. Your hands searched for the lightsaber you had been holding moments earlier, but you only found air. Without time to search for your lightsaber, you had barely a second to act before you were turned into a charred mess.

It was at that moment that you spotted it.

“Blast ‘em!” One droid shouted, and the blaster fire began. But you were gone in an instant, leaving them to shoot at the scorched earth where you had just stood. “Huh?” The droids were puzzled. They looked around amongst themselves, wondering where their target had gone off to. The coast seemed clear, but—

CLANG!

The droid fell like a tree, head disconnected from its durasteel body. You stood behind the droid, chest heaving, with a heavy rifle—taken off a fallen clone trooper, no doubt—held aloft. You swung around the rifle as hard and fast as you could muster, the hefty barrel connecting with your next victim's durasteel face.

"Whoaaaa!" The droid cried in nasally but emotionless droid-speak while its head spun around rapidly. Unable to spare another second in the midst of fighting, you kicked the addled droid to the ground and unceremoniously ripped its head off, thus putting the clanker out of commission—permanently. You grabbed the fallen droid's abandoned blaster and continued to shoot, knocking out droid after droid until an unlucky shot from a Commando droid knocked your pilfered rifle from your gloved hands. Cursing under your breath, you charged into the crowd of droids while the rest of the Torrent Company provided cover fire from behind you, slack-jawed.

"What are you doing, Y/N!? That's suicide!" A familiar voice crackled over your commlink. Captain Rex shook his head in disapproval as he spoke into his commlink, watching from the opposite side of the charred battlefield while he blasted his way through the oncoming droids.

"Don't mind me, Rex. I'll be fine!" You replied enthusiastically, blasting a droid with its own weapon. "I'll be done with this mob in no time—"

CLANG!

You grunted, dodging a Commando droid's vibroblade, whirling around and repeatedly beating it with some poor B1's durasteel arm. Unable to process the given circumstances, the Commando shot blindly, blaster bolts flying everywhere. Continuing to beat the clanker, you gripped the Commando's free arm, which was still clutching a blaster and firing uncontrollably, and twisted it with all your might. The sickening screech of motors and metal resisting your strength grated at your ears until finally, the arm finally snapped off, sparks of electricity flying everywhere.

"Die!" You yelled, firing a blaster bolt through the droid's chest using its own rifle. Satisfied with your painstaking handiwork, you rose to your full height with a satisfied exhale. "That should do it." Without further pondering, you continued to dodge blaster bolts, tackling B1s and dismantling Commandos limb by limb until they fell to the ground in fragmented robot parts, fizzing with electricity. Suddenly, as you made your way through the droid battalion, a stray blaster bolt whizzed past your arm, barely missing the sleeve of your sand-colored robe. Another shot from a lucky droid hit you in the shoulder blade, striking you down. Just as you rolled over with a groan, you were met by another vibroblade to the face. You barely avoided having your face cleaved in half by rolling to the side, but unfortunately, the hilt of the clanker's sword hammered into your head. The hit made you feel dazed, and before you knew it, the droid had closed in for the final blow…

You awoke on a stretcher, floating you towards an awaiting medbay. The bright sun intensified your pounding headache and the memories of the battle that had just subsided were just beginning to flood back.

"Y/N!" Rex appeared in your field of vision beside a medic—Kix, of the 501st—as your stretcher approached the medbay. "Thank the Force you're alright." You flashed him a weak smile.

"See, Rex? I'm just fine."  You tried to sit up, but your spinning head forced you back down onto the stretcher. Your mouth felt dry, like you had also taken a mouthful of sand when you fell. “Correction—” Rex watched on as Kix examined your wounds, clucking over the bruises that bloomed over your face and torso while patching up your few gashes and grazes with bacta. Kix put you on bed rest for your concussion and severe bruising, shooing away any curious troopers who had seen a bruised-up Jedi Knight being transported to the medbay, and promptly leaving to treat the dozens upon dozens of wounded clones waiting for his arrival. After Kix had disappeared, Rex peeked into the medbay once again, spotting you pensively sipping water and cradling your head. He made a move to enter the crowded ward, but his brothers beat him to it—the rest of the Torrent Company came rushing in, knocking him through the wide doorway of the medbay.

"Y/N! You're okay!" Tup exclaimed as the clones surrounded your bed.

"Still fully operational here." You groaned and grinned tiredly. "This headache is killing me, though."

"We saw you beat up those droids with your bare hands!" Hardcase gushed.

"Did you see Y/N beat that Commando with a B1's arm?" Fives asked.

"And then shoot it with its own rifle?" Echo added.

"Wizard!" The clones declared in unison, their laughs and cheers filling the silence of the medbay.

"Now then, boys. Why don't we give our Droid-Crusher here some space and let her rest?" Rex cleared his throat and approached your bed. You swore you could hear some of the clones snigger.

"We'll be outside." The group saluted and exited the medbay. Finally alone, Rex turned to you and sighed, collapsing into the chair by your bed.

"So...Droid-Crusher?" You ask with a lopsided smile. Rex shrugs.

"Cody will be so jealous when he hears you took down more droids with your bare hands than he did." He remarked with a chuckle. "I'm sure he'd agree that you are a real droid-crusher, though. Didn't you see the trail of broken droid parts and weapons you left on the battlefield? The boys were terrified, even Commander Tano and General Skywalker."  The way Rex described your rampage with a twinkle in his amber eyes and a small smile on his face captivated you. “I’m glad one of the boys was able to blast that droid before it put you out of commission for good.”

"As am I, captain." You paused. "What did I miss?"

"Nothing much. We took the Trade Federation fortress at the cost of a couple of men." You frowned bitterly at the news.

“So I missed all of the action?"

“I’m afraid so, General.” Your face fell.

"Now I'll be on bed rest for who knows when. I'll be so…useless.” The realization hit you, and your hand flew to your aching head. “I lost my lightsaber, too…" Rex, however, was quick to disagree.

"You're not useless, Y/N. Next to Generals Skywalker and Kenobi, you're the most resourceful Jedi I've ever met. That's why you're a Jedi Knight, Y/N. You earned your title 'cause you've got that fighting spirit. It's great that you wanna be out on the battlefield, but it'll have to wait." He reassured, resting his hand on yours. You fixed your gaze on him. "You did good out there, Y/N. You made us all seriously proud—especially me."

“Thank you, Rex. That…means a lot to me.” You replied, feeling unusually…nervous. Your face was hot, your eyes darted everywhere, and suddenly, you were aware of every breath you took.

You knew you were stepping out of your comfort zone, if not outside the Jedi principles you were raised on.

He inched a little closer and you felt yourself gravitating towards him, bringing your hands to his face and inching ever nearer until your lips brushed against his cheek and a rosy blush began to bloom on Rex's face.

Following the brief kiss, muffled cheering was from the medbay's entrance, accompanied by the thump of plastoid armor hitting the steel floor. Appearing from behind the curtain was Cody, grinning widely, and the rest of the Torrent boys, who had been eavesdropping from behind the medbay doors. Fives clapped a flustered Rex on the back while Echo rushed to tell Anakin and Ahsoka.  Hardcase, Jesse, and Tup cheered from the other side of your bed, ecstatic to have witnessed you coming through with your feelings. And Cody, having finally met the great Droid-Crusher, watched on with amusement.

"I heard there was a new Droid-Crusher in the GAR, so I got here as fast as I could..." Cody began. "...but I see that Rex ol' boy is a bit preoccupied with her here." Rex hid his goofy grin behind his embarrassed grimace. Standing up swiftly from where he was positioned at your bed, he patted your hand and slipped something from under his kama beneath your pliant fingers. You felt every scuff, the cool metal, the switch–

Speechless, you stared at the lightsaber in your hand, then at him, then at the lightsaber, then him again.

“Let’s just say I found it in the rubble...but I don’t think you’ll be needing it that much, eh, Droid-Crusher?”

Congratulations! You made it to the end of my first ever Star Wars oneshot. Hope you enjoyed it and that you rebagel if you did :)

Command Clone Currency

The clones are unpaid and therefore broke. They can’t really pay each other to do things since they have no money so they go for a new currency: favors

Now, the CTs don’t really do it the same as the Commanders because they have to be specific. They can’t return a favor between battalions quickly, due to fighting/locations/schedule. They’re at the whim of the war and pick and choose their repayment time.

The Comanders are different. They trade and barter like crazy. It’s favors with a few cases of alcohol. They can trade favors they are owed to others all the time, so anyone can cash it. They can pull the strings to get their payment quick.

For example, Cody needed a save from a small squad. He knew Delta was on planet doing some mission and he needed a detour but he had no connection or favor. However, Fox (for some reason) did. Cody offered a case of spotchka and a favor Monnk owed in return for having Delta do the detour. Delta owed fox one less favor, Cody owed no favors (which is the best outcome, since Fox WILL cash it) and Fox got something on Monnk and free (very expensive) spotchka.

Few CTs knew they did it this way, and the CT captains such as Rex and Keeli had to quickly adapt to this way of thinking. Rex made the mistake of owing Bacara before anyone told him. Keeli was lucky enough to meet the SpecOps CC Blackout, who clued him in on the difference but left him high and dry when it came to implementing his knowledge. (Keeli ended up owing Blackout two mini guns for his ‘friendly advice’)

Though, when times are tough and there is little time to barter, it is common to put off the payment until after the act is completed. Though many hate doing this as the trading can become unfair. What often happens is the party in need already has a deal prepared and states their need and their payment, it is hardly ever contested (however the helper may tack on another fee which is accepted or denied).

For example, Doom needed backup from Jet’s flame troopers. He quickly called, stated his need, and his payment of a case of charges. Jet had found the payment (though correct in price, unpractical for his squad) and changed it to half a case of fuel (easier for Doom to get a hold of and just as useful as charges to a Demolition team). Doom accepted the terms and Jet’s squad arrived right on time.

Though the bartering is mostly physical, many deal in the intangible. Perfect examples are all of the Coruscant Guard and the Special Operations teams. These are the only two groups who has everyone (including CT shinies) in on this system. They have the least to offer when it comes to normal ops, after all what GAR commander needs to know where a random Senator is going to be at what time or who slept with who. However, this trading info is perfect for the Guard who constantly works with/against (yay embezzlement and blackmail) these same Senators and for the SpecOps who need to know political climates and interpersonal relationships for recon and assassinations.

Most trading goes on between those two, and their prices are often higher since the missions are higher stake. Often Commando Squads are up for bids (who doesn’t want a four man 100% mission completion rate squad in their pocket), blackmail on natborn officers, republic secrets, senators schedules, crime syndicates favor and areas of interest, etc.

For the Guard, their trading goes further. They work with crime syndicates to keep it off the streets while keeping profit up. Those who do not work with them, go down. They’ve gain control of the lower 2000 levels through this and those who do not conform are forced to by the Guard or the citizens of the lower levels who don’t want to deal with the Guard, (peer pressure and bullying at its finest.)

The commanders learned this from watching the Cuy’val Dar, who would often trade on Kamino. The Alphas picked it up and used it but the CCs truly made it valuable beyond belief. The trainers traded for free shifts and booze, the CCs traded for mission successes and heavy artillery.

Many CTs attempt to learn how this system works. However, as few know it’s different, even fewer see the affects; those that do, know well enough to leave it be.

Despite there being no real difference in intelligence between the CCs and CTs, witnessing the speed and weight of the trades, makes even the Jedi’s head spin.

The Padawans are one of the few outsiders to see it in action. They do not really like it, but many pick it up for lesser trades (help with this paper or answers for this homework). Cal Kestis surprisingly picks it up the best. He’s the youngest so very impressionable, eager to learn, his CC Commander Steel, is very good at it, and Steel is possibly the only one to teach their General’s Padawan.

Steel sees that Cal isn’t going to be on the field much (Steel agrees with this and makes sure he stays on the Venator). So, if Cal ever needs help, he knows how to get it. Steel has made him be present for several trades and even made him come up with theoretical ones. Cal becomes very good at it, but is unable to flex his skills much due to the other Padawans unable to match his speed or skill. They are several years older, see it as in-Jedi like or are bad at it (or their Captains are bad at it and can’t teach them well), their concept of value is off (Jedi don’t often put a price on things and those that do have a habit of underselling due to being nice), and/or they do not know the range of what can be traded.

It’s very personal, with different Commanders wanting different things. Knowing who wants what can often make the payment cheaper for the offering party.

For example, the Marines often need heavy snow gear and blankets. So, offering a box of heating blankets in return for a case of bacta and blaster packs. This is a much better deal than offering a case of mini guns for the bacta and blaster packs. In the second case, Bacara may say no the mini guns or want a case of something else along with the mini guns.

Why Rex, in my opinion, Shouldn’t Have Survived Rebels

Rex shouldn’t have survived Rebels because he could have severely damaged what Luke believed happened to his father.

Imagine for a few minutes that you knew next to nothing about your parents. From a young age you were told that your father ‘did bad things’ and that’s what lead him to an early grave. Then you meet someone who knew your father and they told you that he wasn’t doing ‘bad things’ he was in fact a war hero and a great man who was betrayed and murdered by someone he trusted. Then the man dies before you can ask him more questions. Wouldn’t you seek out those that were still alive that knew him?

Now imagine you served under someone during wartime, or in emergency service, and you admired them greatly and when they died you thought they didn’t have any family. If you discovered that they had a child that was born about the time they died wouldn’t you want to meet them and if they asked share stories about their dead parent?

I my opinion Rex would have wanted to meet Luke and Luke would have wanted to meet Rex. They would have wanted to meet, or if the Rebellion was keeping Luke’s identity a secret Luke would have wanted to meet Rex to ask him about his father and I can’t see Hera not at least trying to arrange the opportunity for them to meet and talk.

Luke and Rex meeting would have put holes in Obi-Wan’s narrative about Vader since Rex more than likely would have heard if Obi-Wan had been training/working with a Jedi Padawan and would have told Luke that Obi-Wan had trained his father, something that Obi-Wan had neglected to mention

Not to mention Rex no doubt knew that Anakin didn’t have many friends in the Jedi Order and was closest to Obi-Wan and he would have known that Palpatine was someone Anakin had considered a friend.

The whole thing would leave Luke with more questions than answers.

Yes, the argument could be made that Rex didn’t leave Lothal much but then why did he leave to help at Endor? We know that Hera left Lothal a couple of times since she was at Yavin IV, Scarif and one or two other locations after the events of Rebels. It wouldn’t have been that hard for Rex to accompany Hera to Rebel Headquarters and request to speak to Luke or for Hera to extend the offer for Luke to meet Rex.

However, this is just my opinion and maybe I’m wrong about Rex being able to poke holes in Obi-Wan’s tale to Luke to the point Luke would be suspcious and maybe they did meet prior to TESB and Rex admitted that he wasn’t privy to all the dealings of the Jedi and he wasn’t on Coruscant at the time so maybe Obi-Wan had taken to training a new Padawan and Anakin hadn’t mentioned it to him yet or it had been done shortly after the Battle of Coruscant and ended up leaving Luke with more questions than answers.

Or maybe Rex didn’t know that Obi-Wan trained Anakin since on Dagobah Yoda did warn Luke that that if he strayed too far towards the Dark Side it would consume him ‘as if did Obi-Wan’s Apprentice’ and if Luke had known that his father was Obi-Wan’s only known apprentice he would have asked Yoda more questions instead of just saying ‘Vader’ and asking if the Dark Side was stronger.

Does anyone know if Rex knew that Anakin was Obi-Wan’s Padawan/Apprentice? If you can answer the question I’ll let you choose the name of a character in one of my fics.

And maybe Rex didn’t remember anymore and couldn’t put that hole in Obi-Wan’s story but he couldn’t back it up either ‘cause he didn’t know/remember.

Where tf did people get the idea Rex is some mini-anakin and some insane hyperactive madman compared to the rest of the clones.

The man is almost the walking talking definition of the phrase “by the books”, he’s as professional as they come, he’s SO god damn professional and proper, that merely calling Anakin by his first name was enough to let Anakin know something was off cause he knew Rex ONLY ever calls him General Skywalker unless shit has officially Hit The Fan™

Yeah sure, he’s a creative and aggressive tactician and more than willing to use unconventional strategies to secure victory, but he only does that cause he’s so by the books he has the whole god damn book memorized and knows how to properly be creative with it.

And no, just cause he’s more wild than Cody is not justification, Cody is the kind of guy to consider doing a mountain of paperwork to be an exciting activity.

Bit of a headcanon of mines, but Rex is indisputably the disciplinarian of the 501st and is generally the last person you want to be pulled into a disciplinarian meeting with.

Anakin can’t bring himself to care about military discipline or maintaining it very much, he’ll dole it out when need be and will give his two cents if he’s asked about it. But generally he turns a blind eye to all but the most serious of infractions and even then he just sics Rex in ‘em. And Ahsoka just doesn’t have a mean bone in her body towards the clones and tries to avoid disciplining anyone whenever she can.

But Rex? He will make your cry with words alone, he needs a bag of cough drops from how sour he’ll shout his voice out, you will be pulling an ARC-170 across the hanger until they reach their destination. He lets nothing slide, shows no mercy, and will push you right up until your bones are about to break. The first time Ahsoka witnessed Rex disciplining some troopers, she left almost traumatized cause of how much meaner he could be than she thought.

In contrast, while Cody is as much of a rules stickler as Rex is, he’s significantly more calm. He’s generally lighter with his punishments if he believes the point can be made quickly. Obiwan doesn’t really do traditional discipline but instead prefers one on one talks which are like having a conversation with a disappointed father you look up to and is way more effective at keeping order than Cody’s method.

One time, very early in the war, Anakin had the misfortune of doing something so incredibly stupid Rex entirely ignored rank and convention and told him off like he would any other Trooper.

Anakin behaved significantly better after that.

Rex Remembers

Rex didn’t know how he missed it. He walked closer to the multi-haired girl. On her shoulder, that number he has seen it before. It was the symbol of his brother. He hadn’t seen it in a long time. He walked closer to her and touched the symbol. Ashoka looked at her old friend, and realized why he looked so sad. That five was a huge part of his life back in the Clone Wars. His eyes filled with tears.

“Fives.” Was all he whispered. And all it took for Ashoka to take two huge strides toward her friend. And she put her hand on his shoulder.

“What’s going on Ashoka?” Sabine asked. The crew of the ghost looking on in curiosity. Rex dropped his hand to his side and sighed.

“This was the symbol of one of my brothers. CT-25555. Fives. He was so proud of that number he got it tattooed on his forehead. Dumb as shit he was. But smarter than anyone else I knew. Except for Echo. Also dumb as shit.” Rex let out a small laugh as Ashoka tightened her grip on his shoulder.

“These where some of the men that served under Rex and I. They where some of the best men anyone could ask for.” She laughed, “We had great time with them.”

Ezra stole a glimpse at Sabine locking eyes with her. Curiosity written across his face. Sabine went to motion him not to ask. But his curiosity got the best of them.

“Really?” The small blue haired boy asked.

Rex was taken aback. Before he started laughing. He reminded him of Echo always curious, ever learning. While the girl reminded him of Fives, rambunctious and always looking for a fight, but fiercely protective. Fitting she got his number.

“Yes. Those where my brothers. We fought side by side in many battles. From the Rishi moon, to Umbara. I met them at at Rishi moon base. They never left my side after that day.

On the battle of Kamino they fought bravely protecting the cadets with us. Fives was a grand speaker, he inspired us. He inspired me.

Echo on the other hand, was not good with people. But he was smart. If you needed to know something you go to him.

On the Citadel he fought bravely.” Rex took in a deep breath. The crew was sat around him listening intently to his stories. Even Kanan had sat down to lis

“Echo went for the shuttle. And it exploded. We couldn’t go for him. We had to leave.” He had to take another minute to compose himself. Ashoka put her arm around him. And he looked at her and smile.

“Fives was devastated, as was I. But Fives more than anyone. Fives became more sullen and quiet. But never lost the fire in his eye. He fought braver than ever after that. Maybe because he had nothing left to live for. But it was on Umbara where he really shined.

Our temporary Jedi general turned on us. He tried to warn me, but I wouldn’t listen. I was a fool not to listen. He fought courageously at my side.

It was when another of my men, Tup, his chip malfunctioned. Fives was the one who discovered it. He was framed by the chancellor, and he tried to warn me again. I this time I listened. He was shot. I held him in my arms as he died.

Later we found Echo was alive. Fives would have been ecstatic to have his brother back. Echo left with another group of clones. One he fit in with. It hurt to see him go.” Rex stopped and dropped his head into his hands. Ashoka also dropped her head. The crew looked around sadly, but was surprised when Rex started laughing.

“Uh, Rex are you ok?” Ashoka asked. Rex nodded still laughing.

“I was just thinking of that time y’all painted my armor.” It took Ashoka a minute before she realized the memory he was talking about. And turned red in shame. Which only made Rex laugh harder and Ashoka turn reder. The crew looked at the pair. Before Ezra just had to ask another question.

   “What are you talking about?”

“Once before a week long mission. Ashoka, Fives, and Echo snuck into my chamber and painted my armor pink. I had no time to wipe it off or paint over it before we had to leave.

I had never been more embarrassed. In my life. The general wouldn’t stop laughing at me.” This caused the crew to begin to laugh as well.

“Are you sure it’s not as embarrassing as that time Fives and Hardcase put bright red hair dye and glitter into your shampoo?” Ashoka asked her old friend.

“Right I forgot about that. That was a long time ago. It stayed red and shiny for weeks.” Rex laughed.

Rex and Ashoka continued to carry on telling stories of the past. The whole crew in tears laughing. The stories of war, stories hope, stories of sadness, stories of pranks and happiness. Stories of not a better time, but a time that came before.

Rex looked at the crew, that time was long gone. Those people where long gone. This is a here and now, this was his family now. And he would protect them with his life.
