DEAD BOY DETECTIVES HEADCANNONS

Edwin and Niko clicked immediately because they’re both autistic (they’re besties). No, I will not be taking criticism.

One of Edwin’s special interests is detectives/ detective work. That’s partly why he decided to become a detective with Charles.

Niko has a special interest in trinkets. She cannot stop herself from collecting them. I believe this would result in quite the large stuffed animal collection. Other special interests she has include animation and manga.

Charles has ADHD. His ADHD makes it hard for him to remember stuff Edwin has told him, so he repeats the parts he remembers, and Edwin will happily fill in the rest.

Crystal is 100% bisexual. I feel like she would’ve had girlfriends in 5-7th grade, and then she decided to take a break in 8th grade. Then, she would get a boyfriend in 9th grade.

Edwin LOVES learning new information. He definitely spends his free time in libraries, classes, and other places he can learn from.

Niko has a specific ringtone for every one of her contacts. Choosing them is one of her favorite activities to do after hanging out with them for the first time.

Charles would LOVE audiobooks. I feel like he has trouble reading because of his ADHD, but hearing them is different. Alternatively, he would love having Edwin reading to him. Edwin would happily read to Charles, and would only stop to add context when needed or to congratulate Charles if he made a good observation. I feel like Charles would commentate while Edwin is reading, and occasionally have actual insight into the book.

Crystal DEFINITELY paints her own clothes. As a result, she owns many bleached shirts, jackets, and jeans. Kind of similarly, I feel like she would occasionally dye her own hair.

Edwin’s parents wanted him to be an athlete, but he would run away during practices to read detective comics.

Niko was afraid to dye her hair before the sprites made it white because she didn’t want to damage it, but she definitely dyes the tips pink (maybe Crystal dyes it for her?)

Charles makes mixtapes for people he cares about (specifically Crystal and Edwin) but they can’t/ don’t know how to play them. They appreciate the gesture though, and I feel like Crystal would make a Spotify version of the mixtape.

Crystal is 100% an only child. Her first experience with having a sibling experience was Edwin (it’s found family, your honor)

Feel free to add on to this! These are all kind of quick thoughts that have been running through my head.

Imagine Edwin being introduced to TV period. He was murdered before TVs were even invented. I quickly Googled this so the information may be a bit wrong, but TVs weren’t common until the 1950s which still leaves ~30 years of technological evolution that Edwin completely missed! He was JUST being introduced to washing machines and telephones (both mostly used by upper class families, so MAYBE Edwin had access to them?) He was alive for the very first talking motion picture (films with sound). There’s no way that the technology in 1989/1990 made ANY sense to Edwin when he escaped from Hell. This however, leaves room for more introductions to technology from Charles. I imagine Charles started introducing technology that was old to him to Edwin, and Edwin just had a look of bewilderment on his face the entire time.

You think Charles ever took Edwin to an arcade?

You think Edwin was mesmerized by all the sounds and lights like he was with the neon lights?

You think he was like a child in Disney Land?

You think it made Charles happy to see Edwin enjoy it as much as he did as a kid?

I LOVE THIS!! I absolutely love when shows touch upon other countries’ cultures and incorporate it into the rest of the show

Being an Asian as I am, I can't help imagining the Dead Boy Detectives Agency learning about Asian supernatural culture if they were to travel to Asia. Each country's belief in the supernatural world varies though, so this is some headcanons based on what I know and not just one specific culture

Ghost repellent: Similar in functionality to a horse shoe in Western culture. There are many objects serving that purpose, such as but not limited to: a paper amulet containing ancient characters (usually written and should be enchanted by a medium with psychic powers (like Crystal) before it can be used), a statue/figurine of a mythical creature, an eight trigrams (bagua) mirror (usually hanged at the entrance of a house), or garlic. Edwin and Charles would be surprised to learn that there are certain mirrors that they just can't hop into.

Crystal is interested in learning how to summon a ghost from the local mediums/exorcists. Ghost summoning in Asia is a difficult ritual which requires the performer to have a strong psychic power in order to control the progress and outcome of the ritual, lest they accidentally summon an evil spirit or demon. However she learns fast and surprises her teachers with her skillful performance.

The team visits Niko's homeland in Japan and have several encounters with the yokais. They also learn about "onmyodo" and the legendary Abe no Seimei.

Food of the living tastes like sand to ghosts, but if the living offer food, drinks and personal belongings via an offering ritual, they will receive a "ghostly copy" of those items and are able to use them normally. Crystal and Niko would perform a few offering rituals for Charles and Edwin so that they can enjoy the local dishes together with the girls as well (of course in the private space of their airbnb because performing it in public will guarantee to get some seriously unwelcoming looks).

I don't think we talk enough about Edwin's reaction to Charles beating the Night Nurse. Because he's scared, he is worried and he is crying. But he is not scared of Charles at all, I think he is scared to lose him. Just in that episode, he had (unwillingly) told the Cat King that he helped other ghosts so he can defend his own case if Death ever came to take him to Hell again. He also says he is not proud about it, that it is selfish.

Charles would have gone to Heaven if he hadn't decided to stay with him. Edwin is sure. But, after what happened with the Night Nurse, he can't be sure anymore. He knows Charles, he knows he is a good man and he doesn't deserve to go to Hell. But he also knows Charles well enough to know he'll feel guilty. And that is how Hell gets you. Guilt drags to down.

I don't think Edwin was walking on eggshells around Charles as Crystal said. I think it just hurt him to see him, to face him, knowing that he may have selfishly made Charles lose his oportunity to go to pradise. Because he had stayed for him. Because he had been protecting him.
