I drew Gordon Freeman in my AU (which I will post about eventually) but to explain it simply, both Half-Life and HLVRAI exist in the same universe, 2 resonance cascades, 2 Gordons. However original Half-Life Gordon (which is shown in the drawing) is HLVRAI Gordon’s Uncle, who was thought to have died in the original ResCas. Plus the Gman fails to reconnect the bomb that alerts the Combine during the 1st one, meaning HL2 does not happen. For timeline sake, ResCas 1 happens May 16, 1995 (ignore that the date on the drawing is wrong) all canon compliant throughout except for the Bomb Shepard defuses. 7 hour war never happens. Later that year HLVRAI Gordon is born, named after his dead uncle. Lives normal life until ResCas 2, 29 years later, which is basically canon-compliant too. There’s more but that will be added as I continue with this.

Stanley, much like Gordon Freeman, is a vessel for the player to project themselves into.
For Half-Life, it gives the player a much larger sense of immersion with the game and control over their actions. Gordon Freeman isn’t anyone, he’s a blank slate. Half-Life has that flexibility because it’s more of a film than anything. You decide who Gordon is, how he does things and what, and most of the time that will be you.
In the Stanley Parable, the silent protagonist takes an entirely different path. Stanley is nobody because it wouldn’t work if he was someone. Stanley being nobody makes the game playable over-and-over-and-
That’s why I love silent protagonists. The immersion can never be beat. The elusiveness makes the game less redundant feeling, more like playing something over in your head and savoring it.
And it also makes it so much funnier to see things like that ^
