Day 9 June of Doom: I made a mistake (blame) (mild blood, self blaming, live experimentation)

Day 9 June Of Doom: I Made A Mistake (blame) (mild Blood, Self Blaming, Live Experimentation)

Hunter couldn't sleep. He never really did. In the emperors coven he got back late, woke up early, and would spend all night researching on wild magic, or palisman, or anything really that caught his interest at the time. And now, even in the human realm, he can never seem to get much rest, though more from horrific nightmares and sleep paralysis than from not having the time for his own interests.

He didn't expect anyone else to be up at two in the morning, maybe Luz but no one else. So when he quietly padded up the stairs into the kitchen he was suprised to see Vee in there. It had been a week or two since the group got stuck in the human realm, and he distinctly remembered Vee's kindness towards everyone until she got to him. She wasn't directly rude, more of just ignored him.

And she had every right to. Belos had personally made Vee's life a living hell for her entire life, keeping her locked in cages, doing terrible experiments on the poor basalisk and her other counterparts. And as Belos's right hand man at the time, he had went along with it. Hunter couldn't recall ever directly hurting the basalisks, but sitting back and watching and not lifting a single finger to help was enough to give her all the reasons to hate him.

Due to not expecting Vee to be up the sight of her frightened him a bit, prompting him to squeek quietly before covering his mouth. Vee quickly turned around with a frightened look, before a more annoyed one took over. She was in basalisk form in the moment, which she seemed much more comfortable with since being in Vee doppelganger form took magic which they had limited sources of.

They both stared at each other silently for a moment, Hunter's bright magenta eyes glowing faintly in the dark, a trait of being a grimwalker. He opened his mouth to say something, but Vee got to it before he could utter a single word.

"...what are you doing here"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Vee tossed and turned, but couldn't figure out how to get comfortable tonight, which was odd since she normally slept like a baby. Her stomach growled hungrily, prompting a frown from Vee. While she ate human food since it tasted good, for sustenance she really needed magic. She had limited hexes holdem cards left but since she was feeling particularly famished tonight she decided to creep down the stairs to grab a couple. She reached up to grab them when she heard a squeek behind her.
The basalisk immediately wiped around, a bit spooked. Who would be up at this time in the morning? Who she was met with, however, made sense considering the prominence of the boys eyebags and his constant tiredness. Her gaze quickly turned to a glare as she recognizes the Golden Guard in the darkness, his eyes glowing faintly and that odd palisman-like magic scent clinging to him.
Vee had to admit she hated "Hunter" as the others called him. No matter his name, it didn't change his status. The Golden Guard. No matter if Belos was gone, he would always be the Golden Guard in her eyes. The things Belos had done, the torture he had put her and her comrades through, driving them to insanity, experimenting until they were husks of their former selves. And he had watched. He had just, *watched* with those eery magenta eyes, stared as guards beat them.
How did he expect her to just, let him stroll on into *her* house and take away *her* space and break into *her* life!? Why was he even here? Why did the others trust this monster!? "What are you doing here" Vee snarled coldly. She watched as the Golden Guard hesitated, glancing down at the floor than back. "I-... I couldn't sleep-" he murmered. Vee cut him off before he could finish.
"No. Why are you *here*? You trying to gain our trust than kill us in the middle of the night? Betray us? Well jokes on you. I'm not falling for it. Try and hurt *any* of my friends and ill-" it was Hunter's turn to cut her off. "I w-wouldnt hurt any of our friends, I swear! I'm not here for that, i..." he trailed off.
Vee's eyes narrowed into snake-like slits. "What. Basalisks got your tongue?" She hissed. Hunter fidgetted with his hands, keeping his stupid magenta gaze on the floor. "...I'm sorry" he murmered. Vee froze. Sorry? Sorry!? He thought a simple sorry could fix the hurt she endured?! Hunter took a step forward closer to her, causing her to bristle.
"I'm sorry... I'm sorry I didn't do anything... I never meant to hurt you, a-and if I could give back and-" he was cut off by Vee yet again. "You *can't* go back and fix it. You hurt me. You hurt *us*. You worked for that snake of an emperor and you never lifted a finger to help!" She snapped, slithering towards him do he shrunk back a bit. She wasn't sure why, but him, here, alone, thinking he could just apologize, made all of her suppressed anger and hatred bubble up.
"V-Vee I didn't know better, i-i-" Hunter's sentence cut off into a yelp of fear when Vee lunged forward and pinned him against the wall, baring her sharp basilisk teeth at him. "I don't want your excuses! You hurt me, y-you hurt everyone! You don't deserve this" she snarled, her sharp claws digging into his arms. For some reason he didn't fight back, just let himself be hurt like this. "I could drain your magic right now, I could claw you bit to bit, so give me one good reason I shouldn't Golden Guard!" She hissed, feeling his warm blood on her claws as her nails broke through his skin.
The Golden Guard stared up at her, his gaze filled with guilt and sadness. "...I have none" he responded quietly. "There is no reason not to. I hurt you... I hurt everyone... I have no reason to deserve your pity..." she listened as he muttered. Something about his tone, about the way he was just, letting her hurt him. She glared at him, before punching him square in the face and letting him go, slithering back a pace.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hunter squeeked quietly in suprise as Vee's fist made contact with his nose and he could immediately feel blood start to leak from his nose, his cheek aching where she had initially made contact. He put a hand to his cheek, before moving it to his nose to try and catch the blood, not wanting to get blood on the floor in fear of punishment.

"Your a monster" Vee hissed, but her tone had lowered and it seemed her anger was fading. "I know." He responded quietly. Hunter knew what he did was cruel, borderline evil, even if he didn't have much choice. He knew he deserved the punch to the face, the blood her could feel slowly running down the side of his arm. "...you should be glad I'm not like you. If I were some... some *killer*, like you and Belos and all those freaks, I would have drained your magic clean, right there." Vee said, hatred in her voice.

Hunter simply looked up at her. For what he had done, this was a very tame punishment. He had hurt people. Killed people. Tortured, maimed, he deserved to be cut limb for limb and hung to die. Vee's gaze faltered slightly. "...I'm done with this... just leave me alone!" She huffed, grabbing the couple cards she needed from the fridge before quickly slithering back up the stairs to her and the girls room.

He waited until she was completely gone to sight heavily, his eyes tearing up slightly. Hunter quickly wiped them away. He didn't deserve to cry. Hunter walked over and grabbed some tissues to stop his bloody nose, putting bandages over the small puncture wounds on his arms where Vee had dug her claws into his skin. He took a shaky breathe, trying to calm the guilt clawing at his heart, the regret berating his mind with every thought.

With that he went back down to the basement, glad to find Gus still asleep as Hunter curled up back in his sleeping bag, trying not to cry. He deserved worse than this. Every word Vee had said was true. Even if he didn't know better, even if he was still a child, even if he was severely misled and manipulated. He shouldn't have hurt her. Them. Everyone.

Hunter swore to not tell the others about last night, making up the excuse he fell as to why his nose was bruised and his arms were scraped up.

Day 10 June of Doom: Can you hear me? (Phone call) (tw mention of death, nightmare)

Day 10 June Of Doom: Can You Hear Me? (Phone Call) (tw Mention Of Death, Nightmare)

Luz lay awake late in the night. She had been doing this unfortunately often. Two weeks ago she had done it, she, she had killed Belos! She finished this, she saved *everyone*.

So why did he still haunt her in the night, stalk her in the shadows of her mind? She sighed quietly, scrolling through fanfiction as she had been doing since eight.

No one else should be up as far as Luz knew. Camila always got to bed at a reasonable time, Vee fell asleep the moment she lay down, and Hunter... well Hunter as far as she knew had started sleeping a but more.

Either that or he's been fake sleeping far better when she gets the random urges to go check on her brother in the night to make sure he's okay.

Luz was honestly worried for the boy. He was already traumatized by Belos and his entire life enough before the fateful night Hunter swore he heard voices, begged for Luz to believe the blue eyes he promised he saw at the edge of the forest.

Of course she hadn't fully believed him. Why should she? Belos had been killed by the Collector, and he was most likely just being paranoid. But he wasn't. If she had just stuck with him, believed him, maybe he wouldn't have lost his partner in crime Flapjack that night.

She knew Flapjack was his first friend. No one in the palace really liked him based on what he said, and the little cardinal palisman had stuck by his side throughout all of the horrors, all of the painful nights.

But now he was gone. And as much as he tried to hide it, hide the pain it brought him to look in the mirror and see the jagged scars jutting across his skin, his warm brown eyes, she could see he was hurting. Belos may be gone now. But he would forever haunt him.

She was startled when her phone started buzzing, dragging her back to reality as she saw the little icon at the top of her screen. Hunter was calling her. Camila had gave him one of their old phones, he remembered how confused yet happy that made him.

Why was he calling her? She checked the time on her phone. Almost two in the morning. Luz hesitantly picked up, turning the volume down in hopes to not wake up her sister. "Hello?" She murmered, hoping he had just accidentally sleep called or something.

So when he answered the little ball of dread in her chest grew a bit. "H-hey..." she heard him mutter through the phone shakily. Something wasn't right. His tone was off, and his voice trembled when he talked.

"Hunter? Is everything alright?" She whispered into the phone. Hunter had gotten his own room in the Noceda house after Camila had cleared out a spare room they had been using as storage for years. The room was at the other end of the hall, closer to Luz and Vee's room than Camila's.

"C-can you come here?" She heard him ask quietly, his voice shaking a lot and she could have swore she heard him sniffle. Luz immediately got up from her bed quietly. "Of course, I'll be right there." She said in a slightly soothing tone. She could tell something was wrong.

She quietly padded over to his room, his door shut. Luz opened his door and shut it as quietly as she could behind her.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hunter felt like he was falling indefinitely, memories swirling around him. Every flashback painful, but familiar. He had been dealing with these stupid nightmares since he was young. It wasn't a big deal.
That was until he felt something tug at the strand of his hair that fell over the side of his face. Flapjack. The bird was no more than a glowing silhouette of his precious bird. "F-flapjack!?" Hunter said, startled.
No, oh Titan no. Flashbacks flooded his mind, him trying desperately to escape Belos's control, the feeling of palistrome wood shattering under his hand, the sensation of water filling your lungs.
Light flashed across the Flapjack silhouette like lightning, jagged cracks appearing on his body oozing that terrible bright green palisman blood. A bloody X across the birds face. Than a loud crash. Than everything disappeared.
He woke up with a start, looking around frantically. He was in his bed. His house. He was okay. Hunter let our a shaky breathe he didn't know he was holding. Hunter couldn't stop the slight trembling of his hand, the tears that threatened to spill from his eyes.
He couldn't handle this guilt anymore. This was all his fault, that Flapjack was gone, that Belos had hurt so many. Hunter shakily picked up his old "phone" from hid bedside table. As far as Vee had taught him it worked kinda like a scroll.
The phone lit up faintly as he swiped right to get in, still not having the mental capacity to remember a password and clicked the phone app. He only had three contacts. Camila, Vee, and Luz. Hunter didn't want to bother Camila, she had already done so much for him, he should let her rest.
Vee was an option, but she was most likely asleep. And while they were warming up to each other she probably wouldn't want to help with his silly nightmares. That left Luz. After a moment of hesitation, she pressed the little green button next to her name.
The phone rang quietly for a couple moments before he heard her pickup. "Hello?" She said, her voice sounding a bit drowsy which sent a bit of guilt through Hunter, thinking she had been asleep. "H-hey..." she murmered in response, choking up the words he had planned to initially say, his voice wavering slightly.
"Hunter? Is everything alright?" He heard her ask with a tone of gentleness through the little phone speaker. He paused, trying to come up with a good answer. *It's okay to ask for help. Don't feel bad about it* Camila's voice chimed in his head.
"C-can you come here?" He squeeked out, disappointed with how pathetic his own voice sounded. "Of course, I'll be right there." She said, before hanging up. He let out a sigh of relief, trying to calm his slight shakiness before she got here.
He watched as Luz cautiously entered his room. Hunter was sat up in his bed, watching her carefully with those warm brown eyes that were somehow so his but so out of place. He watched Stringbean trail after her, the adorable little snakeshifter causing a bit of envy to crawl into his mind before he shoved it away.
She went over and without hesitation crawled into bed next to him, sitting down next to him. They shared trauma, the pain of loss, betrayl, and manipulation. The silence spoke better than any words either could say.
Hunter felt like crying. It was his fault Flapjack was gone, if he had just been more careful, if Flapjack had chosen a better owner than maybe-
His thoughts were cut off as Luz pulled him into a side hug, wrapping one arm around him tightly. "...it's not your fault..." she said gently, like she could read him mind. He glanced away, resting his head on the side of her arm, only able to do so because he was half laying down and she was fully upright.
Neither said anything else that night. They didn't need to. Her small gesture of comfort was enough. Hunter drifted back off into sleep and into a much more peaceful dream full of flowers and Willow. Luz fell asleep to, drowsily passing out and taken in by sleeps warm embrace.
Day 11 June of Doom: I'm not okay (alternative prompt) (mentions of death and abuse)
Day 11 June Of Doom: I'm Not Okay (alternative Prompt) (mentions Of Death And Abuse)
Luz took Hunter's hand in hers, dragging him out of the house. "H-hey! I don't wanna-" he squeeked, but was cut off by Luz rolling her eyes.
"You've been hiding inside all day Hunter, you need to touch some grass." She said with a hint of sarcasm, but her intent was genuine.
Hunter groaned, running a hand down his scarred face as Luz yanked him out the door and shut it with her foot behind them.
"And, there's a pretty place I've been meaning to show you near the lake anyways." Luz rambled, holding on firmly to Hunter's wrist, him stumbling to keep up.
It had been a week since everything ended. Since they got back to the demon realm, since they finished off Belos for good. And it had been... hectic, to say the least.
Camila had given Luz the weak off from school to help out with fixing the Boiling Isles, Vee easily filling in for her while she got her bearings and tried to fix things up. It would be a lot of work with the condition the place is in...
Hunter had been helping too obviously. Using the newly made portal, curtly of King, he had been switching between staying with Darius and Camila. He loved his friends and the Boiling Isles, just... too many memories for him to process at the moment.
He tried to keep up as Luz scampered down the diety path towards the lake hidden in the forest behind the shed. Hunter remembered him and his friends came down here while they were stuck in the human realm, playing around in the water and having a picnic by the side.
The thought of being remotely near water sent a shiver up his spine. Thankfully Luz took to a different route which included climbing up a steep slope. Thankfully, due to Hunter's experience and Luz's adventurous nature they both managed fine getting up the slope.
Luz gently pulled him over to an overlook of the lake. The view was beautiful, the view of the forest and lake below them.
"It's... beautiful." Hunter murmered, his eyes shinning slightly. Luz glanced over at him with a small smile. He hadn't shown much positive emotion since he was possessed and...
Luz sat down in the soft green grass, brushing a hand through the small wild flowers and ground cover. Hunter copied her, sitting down pressing his back gently against hers.
Both looked out at the scenery, birds twittering to one another, the wind brushing through the trees. Both Luz and her brother were just wearing socks, having run out of the house without another thought.
Hunter had been acting really disconnected since the Halloween hayride, since Belos took him over, since he killed Flapjack. Of course he was happy, Belos was gone! It was finally over, him and his friends, they could live peacefully now!
So why was that pit of guilt gnawing at his heart feeling worse than before? Why did he just want to sleep all day, yet he never slept because of the nightmares that plagued him.
"Hunter... you've been acting odd lately. I-... I know it's been hard... I just, are you doing alright?" Luz murmered, glancing back at him a bit worriedly.
There was a long period of silence where neither spoke. Hunter contemplated the question. Was he alright? He should be. Everything was far better than before, the Boiling Isles was saved! So why did he feel so terrible, like something was missing?
Luz nudged him in the back gently. "Hunter?" She questioned, leaning her head back a bit to look at him better.
Hunter dug his nails into his palms. He should keep it hidden. She shouldn't have to worry, she's already been through so much. But Camila's words rang in his head, "Refusing help may hurt them more in the end".
"I-... I'm not okay..." he murmered. Another pause.
"So much has happened... i- I should be happy, shouldn't I? We finally defeated Belos, we're safe now... but somethings eating at my heart a-and it hurts and I know it shouldn't but-" Hunter cut himself off when Luz took his hand in her own, giving it a gentle squeeze of reassurance.
"Take it easy Hunter. I get it, it's alright." She said gently. "You... didn't get much time to process Flapjack's death... it makes sense that it hurts..." she said gently, resting her head against his.
"It'll take a while to feel alright again... losing someone hurts, and the grief won't go away... but with time, it'll be easier." She said, shutting her eyes.
Hunter sighed quietly, tearing up a bit. "I don't want to burden you all... w-we have to fix the Boiling Isles, and I just-" Luz cut him off with a gentle squeeze to his hand.
"Don't worry Hunter..." she said gently, opening her eyes and gazing out at the view.
"We have all the time in the world"
A Month of Whump Day 1: Environmental
Fandom: Star Wars The Bad Batch
Warning: violence
Summary: Hunter takes a few regs to scout the area around a recovered base. What will happen when they are caught in a rock slide?
    Hunter had been sent with some regs to scout the surroundings around the Republic base the battalion had just reclaimed. The other batch members were to stay back to help where needed. The sergeant heard the rocks before the others. Warning them they all tried to get out of the way. Pieces of the land crashed down on top of them.
    Hunter moved from under a thin layer of rock and mub. He escaped to the outside of the tomb. Sitting on the cold ground he started at the rocks. Had anyone survived? After a moment he was able to find the sound of labored breathing. The pain in his wrist already told him he was on his own for now. There was only one thing left to do; dig.
    The rocks were slippery and sharp. It didn't take long for Hunter's gloves to be torn to shreds. His hands would follow in their footsteps.
    After an unknown amount of time the soldier finally found someone. By this point his hands were covered in his own blood. The reg, known as Butters, breathed healthy. Hunter assessed his injuries and carefully moved him from the pile of rocks to the flat ground. "You're gonna be alright." Butters couldn't keep his eyes open. Multiple bones in the man's body had been crushed. He was drenched in his own blood. Rain pulled the crimson liquid down to the ground where it mixed with the mub.
    Hunter returned to the rock pile. It didn't take too long for him to find someone else. However this time he was dead. The rock had demolished the man's skull. Blood lined the gray rock. Hunter jumped back with freight. Not letting Butters see he removed the body of the unknown clone and took it to the other side of the rock pile.
    After finding a few more dead soldiers and one survivor, Hunter started to give up. At least he found the medic. Of course he was dead as well so he took the supplies from him and went back to the two men.
    "I'm gonna take care of you two the best I can alright?" Butters nodded and the unnamed reg didn't move. "Hey reg?" Hunter moved over to him and shook him a little. Checking for a pulse he sighed and took him to the dead side of the pile.
    After taking care of Butters, Hunter returned to the pile. With only two more people underneath the rocks he once more listened for breathing. One of them had survived while the other hadn't. He would find the alive one first. Another no named reg.
    Pulling him from the pile the soldier went to check up on Butters. His breathing had slowed and it looked like he couldn't stay awake. "Butters, you alright?"
    In response the man tried to answer but instead blood flowed from his month. Hunter gave it everything he had. "It's" stuttered the reg, "alright."
    "You're gonna be fine." Not long after Butters would fall into a permanent sleep. Sadly Hunter moved him over to the dead pile.
    Apologizing to the last reg in the pile he walked over to the only surviving soldier of the ten that had come with him. Picking him up he walked back to the base. Quite a lot of time had passed since the clones had left. The sun was rising, leaving the sky a brilliant mix of reds, oranges, and yellows. Clouds reflected the colors slightly and the light rain caused a wonderful rainbow. If only Hunter could enjoy it.
    Guards welcomed the two and took the unnamed soldier to the medical center. Hunter walked with them and was taken over to a table. The medic assisting him stared at his blood-soaked hands. "What happened Hunter?" He asked.
    The sergeant never took his eyes off the only other survivor, "rock slide. Him and I are all that's left. How long is this going to take?" Some droids took the other back for surgery and Hunter finally looked at the medic. "Oh Tech hi."
    "Hello. This shouldn't take too long. Stay still." Tech grabbed a warm, damp, washcloth and pressed it to Hunter's skin. He hissed as it touched him.
    No long after Tech would begin he would finish. "There. Be careful."
    "We need to retrieve the bodies. I can't just leave them there." Hunter looked up at his brother. The numb look on his face concerned Tech.
    "Alright. We will need help. I will go find Crosshair and Wrecker. Some regs will also be required so I will go talk to the general." With that Tech left.
    Not long after the batch and a few others would leave to retrieve the bodies. Hunter warned them of the horrors that would be ahead once they got close.
    Arriving everyone grabbed a body. The regs knew who these people were, they fought alongside them. Hunter grabbed Butters gently and looked to the others. With everyone ready they set off once more. Walking back was excruciatingly silent.
    The soldiers would be buried near the base. Not long after the batch would be assigned their next mission. Hunter's hands would heal but be covered in small scars. The scars served as a cruel reminder of his failure to protect the regs put under him that day. For a while rain served the same sort of pain on a platter. One day he would enjoy the rain again, one day.
This Shot For Whatever Reason Is So Emotional To Me. Remember That Scene Back In EC When Hunter Asks
This shot for whatever reason is so emotional to me. Remember that scene back in EC when Hunter asks Belos if rain in the human realm doesn't boil and we see how curious Hunter is about the human realm and is hanging onto Belos's every word with nothing but complete and utter trust? How much do you want to bet that Hunter believes that that was just another one of his lies, because after all the lies and manipulation why would he believe anything good, no matter how small about the human realm? How much do you want to bet that Hunter was terrified to see another one of his uncle's lies come true before his eyes?
