[Erin!!!!]

Hi my love. I actually wasn’t planning on reading this today. True Crime was going to be the one that I was going to read earlier, but then I scrolled through my ‘to-read’ list, remembered that you had written blond Jungkook, and then proceeded to scream internally (I really think that my mind constantly blocks out the fact that he’s blond now because of this very reason, and the fact that once I realized that you had written a blond Jungkook story-which again, I should’ve known- the whiplash I had was unreal).

Okay….Um...I honestly think that you crept inside of my brain and was like, “hm...let’s see what could ruin Kharli’s Friday night in approximately twenty minutes,” and then proceeded to write exhibits A through Z and put them all in here. I feel... betrayed (just kidding), but this was truly amazing Erin. You write Jungkook so, so well. The way you write in general blows me away honestly. There were moments when I was reading this where I was like "how can you pick the right words for the right emotions so perfectly?!?" Like when it got to the ““Please?” An echo chamber,” part, it was like something in my soul shifted, and it felt like the perfect high five. Or the feeling you get when you hear a song you like when you're out but don’t know the title of it, so you rely on what you think you heard so that you can google search it, and your searching brings you to the song so that you can play it over and over again fifty thousand times??? Yeah, like that.

You are the voice that I wish I had but do not. You're able to just...get it...you know? With your diction and prose and, oh my goodness, the way you had me swooning for Jungkook throughout this entire thing. Yes, um, Erin? Can you please lend me just a little bit of your brain, please??? Or just let me live inside there for an hour or two because I just wanna know how you can write so well😭😭😭And make me feel so much (with and without blond Jungkook as the catalyst for my emotions)

You get to go on cool trips, he gives you all of the random shit his sponsors send him, and you get to preen like a cat that ate the canary when his DMs blow up with hundreds of messages.  

Sure, there are the downsides.  All his stupid pranks - the ones that piss you off when you’re trying to do your makeup, the ones that have him dunking ice cubes on you while you’re in the middle of a shower - and his perpetual recording, camera glued to his hand and if not that, then his phone.  There are the rude comments - the oh, that’s his girlfriend? He could do better was a common one - and the long hours he spends editing, holed away in his office;  the beyond inappropriate packages he gets in the mail, thongs and other things that he immediately tosses away with a reassuring tilt of his pretty head.

You don’t mind it though.  He enjoys it, thrives on it, and you’re there to support him.

But you’d never expected this.

This Adonis standing in the doorway, freshly styled strands pushed back from his forehead, glimmering gold falling across his eyes.  He looks, for lack of a better word, unreal.

(You’re not often speechless.  Can’t be, when you’re dating someone like Jeon Jungkook and everything he does either makes you laugh or infuriates you.  Boring isn’t a part of his vocabulary and you’ve learnt to keep up with his antics over the years.)

“Maybe…” He hums, resting his chin on your shoulder. “But you smell like one in particular and I happened to notice that your clothes are gone. Or are those two things unrelated?” 

Okay so, this literally took me two weeks to get out (because of both school and then Harry Potter), and I’m so glad that I can share my thoughts with you about this story, Mel. 

I've always had a particular liking for stories that start off with action. I'm not sure why, but it's very captivating and it draws you in really quickly without much time to orient yourself. But in the cases that I’m referring to, they have always been fast-paced and action-packed (though this story does have quite a lot of action in a different sense). It keeps your heart beating and your mind racing to keep up, but one thing that I like about Cobalt Blue is that even though a lot is going on during the first few moments, there's still a lot of beauty that’s being captured in the room. From the types of paint, the canvases (the little nod to Namjoons painting was warming), and also just looking outside of that, your writing in as a whole is just so beautifully constructed. For example, even though the main character was panicked, there was a part that I really enjoyed reading:

Speaking of the course of one’s life, you are not ready to die of cobalt poisoning just yet; slowly withering away like the cornflowers on the roadside verge behind your grandmother’s house, rich pigment seeping through your skin to taint your blood. 

I’m not sure why, but it just felt like a cool down. It is almost like a moment where you’re taken outside of a frantic space and being plopped into another where everything is just slow and picturesque and vivid. I also liked the moment when she is looking at Taehyung’s workspace and sees a sketch of herself and thinks, “How much of it is really you, and how much of it is the artist’s interpretation?”. Again, I’m not sure why, but it made me pause in reading this for a few moments just to stop and think and to look outside of myself.

I’m not the best at analyzing art, but I feel that your own art pieces and writing go hand in hand, and they seem to feed off of one another. In my opinion, you draw what you feel like cannot be expressed in words, and you write what cannot be expressed fully through paintings. And even though this story has a lot of smut, there’s still so much that could be said about the characters. Jungkook, for instance. He’s cute. Good. Thorough. Mindful and artistic. To be honest, you explained him better than I ever could: 

You know him as a man of few words, carefully assembling his feelings before speaking. It’s not that he’s shy, per se — just thoughtful in the way he expresses himself. 

With Taehyung though, you feel a shift. It's not a bad one, just noticeable. Where Jungkook feels light and airy, Taehyung feels broad and takes up the entire room in this story. And I think that's why it made imagining everything during the smut (or should I just say flat-out sex scene??) oh so heightened and electric. And the main character. I love her. She's so powerful and witty and a little bit sassy during the entirety of this story and I adore her.

“Shit!” 

You look down, wide-eyed, at the blue goo seeping into your white cable-knit sweater. It drips all over your hands and trickles down the front of your pants. 

Realising you’re still holding the glass jar you somehow managed to save from shattering to pieces — cobalt blue scribbled in messy handwriting on the sticker — you hastily put it back in its place, cursing both your clumsiness and Taehyung’s science experiments in what he calls “the search for van Gogh’s soul”. 

Disgruntled, you look at the potpourri of pots and jars filled with colourful paint. You bet the post-impressionists did know how to tighten a lid. 

A blue blob runs down your wrist and you watch how your sleeve soaks it up eagerly. The thought of having to wring van Gogh’s spirit out of your sogged sweater makes you wince — the poor man has been through enough already during his days on earth, and your recklessness just might have made the afterlife a whole lot worse.

[Hi Shanna!!]

I know that I came to you before this, but writing these reviews has always been a favorite thing of mine, so it felt kind of wrong breaking tradition. One thing that I will say is that I’m happy that this story was the one that kicked off my summer. I feel like ever since you posted this back in February, I was like, “ah, damn. I’m going to be behind everyone else”😂, but I’m glad that this is the story that cemented in the fact that I can relax for a bit. (I also remember trying so hard to not spoil myself! I think I may have read an ask or two about it, but I forgot, so it’s all good😂)

I think it was the second scene you posted as a preview for the story, and I remember when I was introduced to the main character, I immediately was like, “Yes, I like her.” She’s so strong and confident, and it’s not only because of the crown on her head (even though that’s partially the reason why she chooses to make certain decisions, as you find out later on in the story), but she knows what she wants, she doesn’t easily bow down to anyone without weighing out the options, and the way she expresses herself and her appreciation towards other people is very commendable. I know that her relationship with Leo wasn’t the central point, but from the small glimpses of it woven throughout the story and her learning sign language for him, you can see how far her love can extend. How far it does extend to not only her immediate romantic relationships but toward her mother and father, as well as her nation as well. Those are also reasons why she wants control to keep the balance between duty and desire (but more so duty at first). She’s also very witty and funny. Her comment to Jungkook about how she’s glad she doesn’t have to teach him about the “fairer sex” was funny.

Jungkook is also someone I really liked in this story, and I honestly couldn’t see anyone else having the role that he played in this story. He’s a King, so of course, there’s always going to be a hierarchy of power and relationships that play a part in how he responds, but hearing the piece about how Jungkook treats his servants compared to Lord Larkin was nice. It also parallels our reality with the service sector, and how you treat them does reign true.

I also really liked Yoongi and Nemrys! They both had me cracking up at some parts, and in others, it was sentimental. Like when Yoongi told the main character that it was okay to want happiness, and when he explained how using his powers to sense others' emotions makes him confused about his own. It was a moment that made me step back and empathize with him because even without powers as a cover, there are people who can be blind to their own emotions but always extend their hearts out to others. And with Nemrys, the moment that I liked was when he and the main character bowed to each other after saving her life and explaining their origins. It was heartwarming and one of my favorite moments because now there was a line of trust established solely between them, and not only because Nemrys and Jungkook are bonded, you know? (And, if it’s okay, I wanted to ask you 1. About hold old is Nemrys and the other dragons? And 2. What did Nemrys say that made Jungkook blush?👀)

Okay, I feel like I’m talking too much now, but I just wanted to wrap up by saying I think that you also do slow-burn really well. I mean, you put the image of mating into our minds but slowly experiencing the way one feels during that time of exploration and understanding one’s heart during the whole process. The story is very immersive, and I found myself forgetting about the present state of the characters during flashbacks as well! Like you said in the podcast, your writing has become better, and it’s been amazing to watch you grow and continue to grow with your writing! I would never have expected for you to write stories with worlds that are so detailed with the names and characters and landscape (and the history as well?!? AND THE TYPES OF DRAGONS TOO!!! The stormmakers and memory dragons really captured my attention). There are also some subjects that I never would have expected you to talk about within your writing two years ago, but yet, here you are writing about male personas and how that can be used in their favor to blind out their past, and I think that’s awesome! (another question if you don’t mind: What was your favorite part of writing Ember Burning, and maybe your hardest part?)

To be honest, there haven't been a lot of Ex-Husband fics that have captured my attention. I also haven't been on the lookout nor read said Ex-husband fics before, so I feel like I just invalidated myself lol. But when it comes to you and whatever you conjure up in your mind Shanna, I will always take the time and sit down to read them because they are just so refreshing. You write in a way that makes me want to both lay out in the sun and drink a strawberry smoothie but also curl up in bed when it's dark with wine and my favorite candy in hand.

This piece was a sweet and dark mix of love and lust. Of hurt and heartbreak. Of what it feels like to miss someone who had meant so much to you and end up falling back into old routines. I've never been in a breakup, but I do know what it’s like to lose someone. Almost everything reminds you of them and it’s easy to fall back into past habits, especially in this case when the history between Jungkook and the reader is so throughout and detailed. Marked with memories that are hard to just dismiss after everything that they've been through.

Even though this was only a snapshot into their story, you could see so much through their history and just the way they acted in this particular moment. And even though the reader may be lying to her friend Irene, I’m happy that at the very least, she isn’t lying to herself about how she feels.

P.S.-I also read what you wrote regarding their future, and I'm glad that she and Jungkook were able to find each other again in a new light. I'm just so in love with this and the way you write and the stories you’re able to create, Shanna.
