notes: for once, i feel like i didn’t really struggle while writing luke. this probably isn’t one of my best works, but i loved the idea and i’m so glad i was able to try to bring it to life. hope you enjoy!! happy reading! 🫶🏼

request: from my 400 follower celly - “You come here often?” “Well, I work here. So I think I’d have to say yes.” with Luke and maybe a cart girl at the golf club close to the summer lake house?

[3k]

Most of your friends absolutely hate going to work in the summertime. They hate being stuck in an office or storefront all day, no chance to enjoy the high UV and prime lake hours.

You, however, never wake up dreading your work.

During the cold, Michigan winters, you work as a bartender at your college’s local bar. You attend your classes in the morning, do your homework in the afternoon, then clock into your shifts at night. You have the routine down to a science.

During the summers, though, you found a job as the cart girl at the uppity country club closest to the large community of expensive lake houses you drive by every morning.

The tips are amazing, and getting paid to drive around in the sunshine and watch attractive men play golf all day is what you call a small piece of paradise. Not to mention you’re off by five o’clock every day, allowing you time to join your friends and family out on the boat for night swims and evening rides.

Today was especially good, with it being one of the hottest days of the summer so far, your sales were sky high.

You’ve already had to restock your beer cooler three times this morning, and it’s barely even noon.

Your boss has really been pushing the sale of liquor, so you inform every group you pass about your buy a double, get a single shot half off deal, but nothing calls to a man more than a cold beer on a hot golf course.

Many of the men you’ve served today have given you a tip simply because you’re out working in the heat, delivering beers ‘like an angel’ one middle aged man told you, handing you an extra ten.

You just laughed and told him thank you, pocketing the cash. You always loved weekend mornings, locals and vacationers alike all over the course, upping your sales, and as a result, your tips.

As you’re leaving the club house after yet another restock, you see a group of guys that you assumed were around your age.

They were being loud, but not obnoxious, as they piled into two carts and sped their way out to the course, eager to get their game started.

You wondered when you would see them, having been told not to bother people until they’re at least on hole two. Apparently, people get mad when you try to sell them alcohol in the middle of their first stroke.

You make your way around your normal path, starting at hole eight and working your way in a circle until you get back to the clubhouse, the later holes being your big money makers. People are either celebrating their lead or mourning their loss at that point, wanting a drink either way.

You sell a few shots, making your boss happy no doubt, but run out of beers for the fourth time that day around hole sixteen. You stop and offer to each group after that, selling a few more liquor items, but were mostly told to come back when you had beer again.

You’re flying down the cart path, when you see the same group of guys from earlier around hole seven, one out of the group flagging you down as you speed by.

You slow your cart down to a stop and they walk over to meet you, grabbing their wallets from their carts as they approach you.

“Sorry, boys, out of beer. On my way back to the clubhouse now to restock if you want to wait a few,” you tell them once they’re within ear shot, not wanting to get their hopes up.

“Well, do you have anything you can sell us? I’m getting beat pretty bad out here and need a pick me up. Don’t really care what it is,” a brunette pleaded.

You tell him about the shot deals, and he hands you his I.D., requesting a double shot of crown and ginger-ale before turning and asking his cart buddy what he wanted.

“Jack, what do you want?” he calls over to a guy that looked similar to him, thinking to yourself that they could be brothers.

He explains the discount to the other brunette, saying he’s already paid, just to pick what he wanted.

Jack, you learned, asked for a simple, funnily enough, Jack and coke.

“Alright, gentlemen, anything else I can do for you?” you ask, turning to face the rest of the group.

You make eye contact with a tall, curly-headed boy, noticing the pink tone of his cheeks when you catch him staring at you.

“Anything for you, curly Q?” you ask him, taking note of how attractive he was. You always play up the flirting a little when you find a player on the course attractive, figuring it’ll help your sales while simultaneously allowing you to have a little fun.

His cheeks turn an ever-deeper shade of red when he realizes you’re talking to him, freezing up and averting his eyes. You feel a little bad for putting him on the spot, but you find his shyness endearing.

“Nah, Lukey here isn’t old enough, is he Quinny?. Still got a few months till you can drink with the big bros. Isn’t that right, Luke?” the brunette named Jack slaps who you’ve now learned is Luke on the back.

You let out a chuckle, witnessing the deadly glare Luke shoots at his older brother.

“Don’t worry, they picked a cart girl that isn’t even old enough to drink, either. Won’t be able to drink the concoctions I make until next spring,” you tell him, hoping to alleviate a little of the embarrassment you caused him.

“Oh, wow,” is all he utters out, bringing out another laugh from you.

“Alright, well, I’ll let you boys get back to your game,” you tell them, walking back over to get back into your cart.

You ride off, thinking of the tall, curly brunette the whole time.

Three hours later, you’re tending the clubhouse bar.

When you came back in for restock, your boss told you it was too hot for you to keep your role as cart girl all day, insisting you switch out with one of your coworkers.

You weren’t too upset with the trade off, now in air conditioning but still getting tips from buzzed players after their game, either nursing their loss or celebrating their win.

The clubhouse gets busier as the day goes on, people dipping in for a quick cool off after playing eighteen holes in the heat.

“Hey, new body down on the end. Care to get it for me?” your co-tender, Brady, asks you, the two of you working in tandem.

You nod at him as you finish pouring the beer in your hand, walking down to the other end of the bar.

“Hey, player, what can I get for ya?” you ask the stranger, not looking up as you place a coaster in front of the patron.

“Just-Just a water, if you don’t mind,” he asks, slightly stumbling his words.

You look up to see the curly brunette, Luke, from earlier.

“Oh, it’s you. Curly Q,” you say, grabbing a glass and filling it with ice.

“Name’s Luke, actually,” he tells you, the redness from earlier returning to his cheeks.

“Yeah, I remember. Just think Curly Q fits you better,” you smirk at him, placing the glass full of water on his coaster. “I’m Y/N, by the way.”

He mumbles a small thanks, taking a sip from the glass.

“Anything else I can get for you?” you ask him, glancing down the bar to see if any new customers have sat down.

He stares at you, his eyes caught like a deer in headlights.

You wait patiently for an answer, letting out a small giggle when he just continues to stare at you.

“Alright, well I’ll let you think about your answer and be right back,” you laugh as you start to walk away.

“Wait!” Luke startles you, stopping you in your tracks. “Uhh..do you…come here often?” he stutters out, closing his eyes tightly in embarrassment as soon as the words leave his mouth.

Your eyes shine at him with amusement. “Well, I work here, so I think I’d have to say yes,” you respond, smiling.

Luke peeks one eye open at you, seeing your amused expression and sighing, letting his body sag.

“Yeah, I don’t know why I asked that,” he runs his hand through his curls nervously.

You rest your arms on the bar in front of you. “ehh, don’t worry about it,” you tell him, scrunching your nose as you shake your head.

Luke gives you a nervous smile, sliding his water towards his body and running his finger around the rim of the glass.

“I’m sure you talk to all kinds of idiots like me when you’re serving drinks, huh?” he asks, making your face fall a bit at his defeated tone.

You stand a little straighter. “Nah, not really. Most of the idiots I talk to are just old and creepy, not my age and charming,” you tell him, finally earning a laugh from him.

His laugh was more of an amused scoff, but you already want to see the shy smile that makes its way onto his face afterwards, again.

“Yeah, cause a guy that asks you if you come to your job often is the epitome of charming,” he looks up at you.

“Well, it’s kept me here talking to you so far, hasn’t it?”

Luke blushes, making you think the man in front of you is unable to go two minutes without his face turning red.

“Yeah, I guess it has,” he casts his eyes towards his lap.

“So, Luke, you a local or here on vacation?” you ask him, glancing down at the quickly clearing stools. You know Brady is getting all of your tips right now, but you can’t bring yourself to move from your spot.

“Well, a little bit of both. Technically on vacation because I live in New Jersey now, but my parents have owned a lake house here since I was a kid, so I claim the title of a local,” you finally get him to loosen up a little, his body language relaxing. “Plus I went to U of M for a little while, so I’ve spent quite a bit of time over in Ann Arbor.”

“Ahh, a city boy,” you tease, grabbing a glass to wipe down, making it look like you’re at least partially doing your job. “Why’d you leave Ann Arbor?”

“Got a…uh…job offer in Jersey,” he tells you cryptically, eyes darting around the room.

“‘A uh…job offer?’ What are you, in the mafia?” you ask him, mimicking his words and poking fun at his nervousness at telling you about his job.

“Well, not quite,” he starts, laughing a real laugh this time, causing you to mentally record the sound and store it in your brain. “I…ahhh…I play hockey up there.”

Your eyebrows raise in surprise. “Like, professionally?”

He sinks back into his seat, looking like he wants to hide.

“Yeah. For the New Jersey Devils. My brother, Jack plays for them, too,” He tries to pass some of the attention off of himself.

“Wait, you and your brother both play in the NHL?” the impressed tone of your voice gives Luke a little boost of confidence.

“Well, both of my brothers, actually. But Quinn plays for the Canucks up in Vancouver. Jack and I are both in Jersey, though.”

You let your mouth hang open at him, not being able to hide your shock.

This earns another laugh from Luke.

“What kind of superhuman DNA do your parents possess?” you ask him.

“Not sure. We’re still being studied as we speak,” Luke leans closer, whispering like he’s telling you a secret. “The big wigs in the NHL haven’t found out yet that they grew us in test tubes in their basement.”

You let out a laugh so loud that you gain the attention of several men on the other end of the bar, slapping your hand over your mouth.

Luke leans back in his seat, a fond smile on his face as he sees your embarrassed expression.

“Hey, Y/N, you gonna come help me do your job or what?” you hear Brady yell, annoyed that he’s been working the whole bar alone for the past ten minutes.

You roll your eyes while still facing Luke, removing your hand from your mouth and turning your head to respond. “Yeah, don’t get your club all bent, I’ll be right there.”

Luke’s still smiling at you when you turn back to face him.

“Guess that’s my cue to get back to my job and quit talking to cute boys sitting at the bar, huh?” you spew, realizing what you just said a second too late.

Luke’s eyebrows shoot up, his back straightening in surprise.

You pause all movements, staring at Luke.

“Uhh…anyways, gotta go do my job. Y’know, the thing I come around often for?” you make a call back to Luke’s attempt at a line earlier, hoping it take some of the attention off of what you just said.

Luke chuckles at you. “Yeah, i need to go meet back up with my fellow lab rats, anyways,” he tells you, reaching for his wallet, placing a twenty down on the bar.

“You do realize water is free, right?” you tell him, sliding the bill back to him.

“Yeah. Figured I’d try to make up for the tips I caused you to lose, though,” he shrugs his shoulders, standing from his chair.

“Nope, I’m not taking your money. Feels like you’re just paying me for talking to you,” you tell him, holding the money out towards him and shaking it around, trying to make him take it.

Luke shakes his head at your stubbornness. “C’mon, just take it. Your coworker collected all kinds of tips while you were over here.”

“Nope,” you shake your head, leaning over and grabbing Luke’s arm, placing the money in his hand.

“I need to do something, though. I feel bad causing you to lose out on money that should’ve been yours,” he insists.

“Well, I guess I’ll let you make it up to me,” you start, watching him try to lay the money down again and shooting your arm out, preventing him from doing so. “By giving me your number,” you decide to be bold.

Luke goes still. “Uhh, y-yeah. Sure,” he snaps out of his momentary freeze, fumbling for his phone, handing it over to you.

You put your number in his phone, sending yourself a text before handing it back with a wink.

“I guess I’ll talk to you later?” Luke asks, pushing his stool in.

You nod your head yes, turning to go back to your job duties.

You turn back around after you take a few steps, seeing Luke walking away with his back turned.

“Hey, Curly Q!” you call after him, causing him to turn to look at you. “I get off at five, in case you were wondering,” you shout towards him, flashing a smirk before you walk away.

Luke smiles and shakes his head, making his way towards the other side of the clubhouse.

You watch his figure as he moves across the room, stopping to make small talk with a man, shaking his head before joining his brothers at a small table on the restaurant side of the clubhouse, picking up his menu and browsing the food selection.

You smile to yourself and go back to stacking glasses.

As you’re transferring a new stack of clean glasses to the cooler under the bar, you hear someone call your name from above you.

You stand, rattling off your typical greeting to the new customer.

“Someone named Luke asked me to give this to you,” he tells you, handing you the same twenty-dollar bill Luke had tried to hand you a few minutes prior.

You pick up the bill as the stranger walks away, looking down at it before raising your head and looking for the curly headed culprit.

You meet Luke’s eye, raising a brow at him while lifting the paper money, pointing at it.

Luke shrugs his shoulders and grins from across the room.

Months later, when you’re attending your first ever Devils game in support of your newly titled boyfriend, you watch him skate out on the ice for warm ups, making a bee-line to the seat he provided for you.

He looks at you in his Jersey, a sight he pictured from the moment he first saw you on the golf course last summer, wondering how he managed to impress the pretty cart girl he embarrassed himself with, what feels like so long ago.

Your smile took up your entire face as you waved at him, excited to finally see him play in person. He smiles back, pointing down to the ground, asking if you wanted a puck.

You nodded your head yes, watching him pick up a puck and take the cover off of a small cut out in the plexiglass separating the two of you.

When he slides the puck through the hand sized hole, you grab onto his glove, replacing the puck with a piece of paper before pushing his hand back towards him.

He looks down at his hand, confusion written all over his face. He opens his glove, looking down at his hand, his head snapping up to look at you once he realizes what you had done.

“There’s your tip, hot shot!” you shout at him through the glass, smiling in amusement, seeing the same twenty-dollar bill from the first day you met him resting in his red glove, never imagining that the nervous, bumbling boy sitting in front of you at the bar that day would make you feel like the luckiest girl in all of Michigan, and now New Jersey.

how does the series work?: there will be three fics in total! one for each brother and their girlfriend of course. i don't know if i want to do any blurbs or follow-ups based on this but time will tell.

it’s tiktok time ⋆ l.hughes

Its Tiktok Time L.hughes
Its Tiktok Time L.hughes
Its Tiktok Time L.hughes

you observed as your boyfriend, luke, confidently stepped forward, carefully placing the golf ball on the tee.

with a hint of cockiness in his voice, he declared, "now this is how it's done," before positioning his golf club just right. he then skillfully swung the club, making a precise and controlled movement to hit the ball.

as you watch the golf ball sail gracefully through the air, your mouth instinctively shifts open in anticipation, your eyes intently tracking its trajectory.

"oh, oh, where's it going to land? where’s it going to land?" the words tumble from your lips, a mixture of excitement and uncertainty as you eagerly await the ball's destination.

then, with a satisfying plop, the ball disappears into the nearby pond, prompting an enthusiastic "yes!" to burst forth from your mouth.

turning to your boyfriend, you can't help but gloat, pointing a finger, "now you have to do that tiktok with me!"

a mischievous grin spreads across your face as you see him shake his head, his expression a blend of amusement and feigned exasperation.

"haha," you chuckle, reveling at the opportunity to coax your partner in to joining you in a trend you've been eager to try all summer.

“yeah, yeah," he responds with a shrug, conceding to your request, and you quickly rush back to the parked golf cart, snatching up your phone from the cupholder.

as you hurry back, you've already navigated to the app, selecting the audio. you hand him the phone, saying, "you already know, i’m lois and you're peter."

with a resigned sigh, the curly-haired boy steadies the phone, “yes babe.” his slight smile betraying his underlying amusement at your infectious enthusiasm.

“okay, press record," you instruct, practically vibrating with excitement as you get into position.

you dramatically raised your arms and asked "so.. so what do i do? just aim for the pond?,” it was clear you were poking fun at the mishap that had occurred previously.

luke gives you an amused smile after your bit as he hands over the phone to get into position for his.

you giggle at his seriousness as he prepared to deliver his line perfectly encapsulating the playful, affectionate dynamic between the two of you.

"no, you're not supposed to hit it into the water.”

"alright, good, good, switch again.”

the back-and-forth continued as you handed the phone back to your boyfriend, making sure to point at him for this next part "but you hit it into the water," your laughter ringing out as the audio cut off.

luke quickly tosses the phone over "oh haha, that was perfect."

"duh," you press record, "now go."

luke lets out a huge sigh, "i know i hit it into the water."

"perfect, switch."

as luke pressed record again, you dramatically scratch your head and shrug at the camera, asking "why do they even have water if you're not supposed to hit it there?"

as you grab the phone, you instruct luke to be "very, very dramatic" for this next part.

"i gotchu," he simply responds, his arms already spreading wide in an exaggerated gesture, clearly relishing the chance to bring the desired level of theatrics to the moment.

he's obviously not going to reveal it but he's been eagerly awaiting this opportunity ever since you brought it up months ago.

"because it's fun! we’re having fun!" luke exclaims, his words dripping with a feigned irritation.

the brown-haired boy then tosses the golf ball he's been holding and swings the golf club at it like he's stepping up to the plate, sending the ball soaring through the air as you pan the camera to capture it.

after a brief pause, you flip the camera around to face you, pressing record with a bright, beaming smile. "look, it went further than your first ball," you say.

just as you're about to stop recording, you turn your body towards luke, and the boy leans in, planting a quick kiss on your cheek.

the gesture catches you by surprise, and you can't help but blush furiously, the flustered expression on your face captured for all to see before you end the video.

"that was fun!" you say, as you set the phone down, your boyfriend nodding in agreement. "it was," he responds, “now where were we?"

"still hitting balls in the pond of course," you playfully snatched the club from his firm grip, a mischievous grin spreading across your face. "my go, haha," you chuckled.

hours later…

the tiktok had completely blown up, taking the internet by storm. it had been quickly reposted and shared by a number of prominent sports and entertainment accounts like bardown, barstooluofm, and even the official nhl account.

an: hi loves!!! back with another Luke fic...are we surprised? I'm a big fan of this little prompt, I was stuck between writing this for 3 different players, so I had google pick a number between 1-3 and 3 was Luke so here we are!! I love writing for luke, especially, cute and soft luke. more coming very soon!! I hope you guys enjoyed, like and reblog if you do! much love as always.

happy reading <3

1.

The first time Luke saw you, he thought he had experienced love at first sight. He was running late to practice, waking up only 5 minutes before he had to be there. quickly throwing on random clothes, slipping on his shoes and running out of his dorm at lightning speed.

Not paying attention to his surroundings, his only focus was getting to practice on time to avoid having to do extra drills on the ice, given to him by his coach. Just as Luke turns the corner, he feels something or another person slam against his chest. Quickly pulling back to see the prettiest girl he's ever seen on the ground, with her books surrounding her.

“Oh my gosh. I'm so so sorry '' Luke gushes out to the nameless girl in front of him. Quickly reaching down to help her grab her books.

“Its okay, i should have watched where i was going” she says softly

“No it was completely my fault, I was in a rush, '' Luke says, offering a hand to help pull the girl from the ground.

“Oh, thank you” she says smiling as he takes his offering hand. Getting up, she brushes herself off before looking up at Luke, who's holding her books tightly in his hands. The pair staring at each other before Luke clears his throat, suddenly remembering he has a practice to get to, that's definitely late for now.

“Here's your books” he says handing her the stack, “again I'm so sorry for crashing into you” he finishes.

“It's okay, things happen. No worries” she says, pushing a piece of hair behind her ears as she looks up at him.

“I'm really sorry to cut this short, but I have to go to practice, which I'm already late for..” he says, Luke's voice trailing off in embarrassment.

“Oh! Of course! You better run” she giggles out

“I'll see you around!” he shouts out as he begins to jog away from her.

“My name's y/n!” he hears her shout from behind him

“Luke!” he yells back to her, turning around quickly to find her standing there with a smile on her face, sending her one last wave.

Luke couldn't help but have the same smile on his face as he ran the rest of the way to practice.

Not caring about the ear full he was going to get from his teammates, and coach, or the drills he was going to have to do after practice. The only thing on his mind was you. wanting to know more about you, and maybe, but maybe how it felt to kiss you.

2.

Ever since Luke ran into you, 5 months ago, it's like gravity had forced you two together. Luke immediately looked you up on instagram the same night, following you instantly, hoping he'd have the chance to talk to you again.

It seemed like god heard his wish, because now here is he with you in a spirit halloween as you guys try and find matching costumes for a halloween party, that you two had gotten invited to last minute.

“Luke, what about this one?” you ask, holding up an adult sized mario costume.

“Absolutely not”

“Why not?? I think this fits you” you say giggling

“WAIT. I have a better option.” turning around on your heel, picking up another costume, “Luke you are sooooo luigi” she says laughing

“Why do you hate me?” he says, rubbing his hands over his face.

“I do not! Stop being dramatic” yn sighs, “you've hated every option I've shown to you, this is the best option we have so far. If you don't want to go, just say so”

The sound of your tone, towards the last part of the sentence is enough to make luke lift his head up in confusion.

“Woah woah. I never said I didn't want to go, I'm sorry if I ever made you feel like that” he says, his hand finding your arm pulling it slightly, so you look up at him.

“I'll love and wear anything you choose for me. Hell, I'll even wear a paper bag, if that makes you happy” he says, looking into your eyes.

“Really?”

“Yes really, now let's be the best mario and luigi the worlds ever seen”

A smile spreads over your face, as you register his words, Luke can't help but get lost in your eyes, the plump of your lips, taking in every part of you, as you look up at him.

Not caring if you were in the middle of an aisle in spirit halloween, in that moment luke really wanted to kiss you.

3.

Luke's hands couldn't help but shake as he sat on the couch with his brothers, today was the day. A day that could change his life for forever, the NHL draft. Everything he’s done, all of the blood sweat and tears he put into the sport, that he considered his life. it all came down to, today.

The pressure of following in his brother's footsteps, wanting to be as good, even better than them. to play at the same level as them, had always been a goal of his. Now that he’s finally here, he can't help but be scared of what's to come.

The lights and cameras are making it harder for him to calm his nerves, he knows he’ll get drafted, he knows he's good at what he does, but is he good enough for the NHL?

His heart starts to beat even faster as the devils are about to select their pick for the draft, it would be a dream come through to be able to play with one his brothers. When they call his name, Luke can't help but be in complete shock. His family, and friends are all cheering and yelling around him. He can feel Jack jumping beside him yelling in his ear, as he stands up. Hugging his family, cheering with his friends.

Turning around he sees you standing with his friends, cheering and clapping for him, seeing a few tears fall down your face, looking at him with the biggest smile on your face. Luke begins making his way to you, weaving through the crowd of people that separate you two.

When he finally reaches you, your arms instantly wrap around him, his arms finding your waist as he pulls you off your feet, spinning you around before sitting back down you.

“I'm so so proud of you luke” you say with a wide smile on your face

“I wouldn't have been able to do it without you, thank you for standing by my side”

“There's no one else I'd rather cheer for than you,” you say, running your hand across his cheek. Luke couldn't help but feel a rush of heat spread through his body, as you touched his face. Wanting nothing more than to pull you into him, because he really really wanted to kiss you.

4.

With the hockey season coming to an end for the devils, after a rough year, luke wanted nothing more than to be in michigan away from all things hockey. Most importantly he wanted to be around you, only seeing you about 5 times a year was taking a toll on him. He missed you more than he’d admit, so when he had asked you to come to the lake house for two weeks during the summer, it was an offer she couldn't turn down.

Pulling up the Hughes lake house was like a dream come true. The bright sun hitting yn’s skin, taking in the smell of the lake and the view around her, the summer breeze blowing on her face. As yn makes her way to the trunk of her car, she hears the front door open, turning around to see Luke running towards her with a smile on his face. Pulling her into a bone crushing hug as soon as he reaches her, your body feeling like home against his.

“I cant believe youre actually here” luke says looking down at her

“Well you invited me, of course I'd be here. I wouldn't trade it for the world.”

“I missed you so much” he says softly leaning down loser to her face

“I missed you more luke” yn counters, their faces are so close together that luke can feel yn breath fanning his face, from each breath she takes.

Just as he's about to connect their lips together, he can hear Quinn and Jack run out the door, interrupting their almost kiss. Luke pulled away quickly, before his brothers could see.

“LOOK WHO IT IS '' Jack shouts to yn, before jogging over bringing her into a hug.

“So glad you're finally here, moosey here has been whining about how much he missed you.” Quinn teases him, wrapping his arm around yn’s neck pulling her towards the house, as both him and Jack begin to talk her ear off.

“Hey! That's not fair you're taking my guest away from me "Luke shouts to him, a slight pout paints his lips and he watches them walk away with you.

“Oh suck it up lover boy, you'll see her everyday for two weeks straight.'' Jack quips at him as they head into the house.

Luke lets out a loud sigh in response, turning around to grab her bags out of the car. Thinking only a few minutes ago, you guys were so close, so close. Luke really wants to kiss you, and he doesn't know much longer he can go without it.

1+

Luke thinks he's going crazy, being around you for a little over a week during the heat of summer, seeing you walk around and tiniest swimsuits, and barely any actual clothing, was beginning to play tricks on his mind, or maybe it was the heat he couldn't tell. But what he did know was it was getting harder and harder each day to not pull your lips against his.

Everyone always seemed to be in the way of Luke getting you alone, so he can tell you how he feels. Whether it was his brothers, his friends or family, something always got in his way, and he's had enough of it.

“Luke, do you wanna go on a walk?” yn asks standing in the doorway of the kitchen as luke grabs a bottle of water from the fridge

“Yeah of course, let me grab my shoes” he says smiling at her

Turning around, Luke makes his way to the front door, slipping on a pair of beat air forces, “ready?” he calls to yn.

“I am” she says, trailing behind him as he heads out the door.

They walk in silence for a few moments, before Luke breaks the silence that surrounds him, “is everything okay?” he asks

“Yes everything is fine, I just wanted to be around you alone. I feel like I've seen you, but not at the same time?”

“I definitely get that, I just want you all to myself.” luke responds

“You must really like me huh?”

“More than you even know” Luke says before he can catch himself, his words causing her to stop dead in her tracks, turning to look at him.

“What do you mean” yn asks

“I-i like you” luke quickly says

“I like you too luke”

“No yn, I mean I like you, I love you. I've loved you for the past 2 years, ever since I ran into you. You know the first thing i thought when i saw you was gosh this girl is so beautiful. I was so tempted to skip practice, just to talk to you more. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to admit that you '' he finishes, yn’s eyes wide as she looks at him.

Luke can feel his heart almost beating out of his chest as he waits for her response.

“What do you want to do right now?” she asks

“What?” luke asks confused by her question

“What do you want to do right now luke.” she asks again, her eyes still locked with his

“I'd really like to kiss you” he says slowly

“What's stopping you?” she says, with a small smile on her face

Luke wastes no time leaning down and connecting their lips together, her lips are warm against his, as they move together. His hands are on her hips, pulling her closer to him, as their lips continue to move together as one. Pulling back, Luke rests his forehead against hers as they catch the beaches looking at each other.

“I love you” yn says softly, luke cant help but smile at her words, before connecting their lips back together again.

Because all that luke hughes wanted to was kiss the girl that he was in love with, and this time he was.

Hiya lovely, going on my first flight today and was wondering if you could do a Luke Hughes x reader where she hasn’t been on a plane before and is kinda stressed out abt it?

JELLY ON A PLATE — luke hughes x reader

a/n: I’m writing this sitting on a plane right now, this is actually way too much of a coincidence for me to ignore!! Also the jelly on the plate analogy is my fave thing ever about flying!

Hiya Lovely, Going On My First Flight Today And Was Wondering If You Could Do A Luke Hughes X Reader

The buzz of JFK Airport hummed incessantly in the background as you clutched your phone with boarding pass, your fingers drumming a nervous rhythm on its edge. Beside you, Luke stood, his arm loosely draped across your shoulders as he stood with his signature lazy smile. He seemed at peace, his calm demeanor a complete and utter contrast to your unwavering anxiety.

You’d never been on a plane before.

You never had to. You and your parents would drive to destinations on lengthy road trips to avoid high flight costs, but now, Luke wanted to bring you to Michigan and whilst he could drive the long eleven hours, it just seemed all to convenient to just get the hour long flight.

The terminal was a bustling hive of activity. Announcements echoed through the cavernous space, calling passengers to various gates, and the scent of coffee and fast food lingered in the air. Families hurried by, dragging suitcases and wrangling children, whilst business travelers briskly tapped away on their laptops or spoke into their phones. A multitude of different languages swirled around you, your chest tightening with that awful feeling of unease.

All of which was feeding the monstrous pit of the purest form of anxiousness forming in your stomach.

Luke glanced down at you, his grip readjusting as he noticed your uneasy gaze darting around. Gently, he pulled shifted you closer into his side, his head ducking to speak to you.

"Hey, you doing okay?" Luke asked quietly, his voice sending soothing waves down your spine.

You gave him a shaky nod in return, your lungs gulping a deep breath yet the tightening knot in your stomach urged you to tell the truth.

"Just... a bit nervous,” you slowly admitted, and Luke’s gaze softened significantly. He pressed a kiss to your temple, your body melting agonist his.

"I know, baby,” He hummed, keeping you close to his side. “But it’s a short flight and I’ll be right with you the entire way, it’ll all be fine.”

From then on, Luke ensured to continue talking away casually with you, sharing little jokes and stories of Michigan to keep your mind off the impending flight. You had listened intently, grateful for the distraction as your leg bounced.

The two of you found a quiet corner near your gate to wait for boarding, away from the main hustle and bustle.

"Remember that time we went to that theme park?" Luke asked carefully, breaking the silence, his hand interlaced with yours. "You were terrified of the roller coaster, but you ended up loving it and begging me to go on again."

"Yeah, I remember,” you answered lowly, head dropping down onto his shoulder. He smiled at your movement, squeezing your hand.

"And this is no different. It might seem scary at first, but once we're up in the air, it'll be just like that roller coaster, promise." Luke firmly assured you.

The boarding announcement interrupted your conversation, and you felt your pulse automatically quicken. Luke stood up and kept you close to his side as you began the process of boarding.

As you walked down the jet bridge, you found yourself faltering as the hum of the plane's engines grew louder and closer with each step.

Your anxiety spiked again as you stepped onto the aircraft, the confined space and unfamiliar sounds and random beeps amplifying all of your fears.

Luke didn’t let go of your hand, anchoring you to him as you bit your lip in worry.

As you settled into your seat, you glanced nervously out the window taking in the the gray clouds that hung low. You’d read in your panicked research that clouds almost always promise a bumpy ride. Luke kept an eye on you as his thumb comfortingly stroked over the back of your hand.

“Do you think there’s going to be a lot of turbulence?” You blurted out, eyebrows scrunched together as you turned to your boyfriend. Your worry pooled in your eyes whilst Luke calmly tilted his head.

"Hey," he softly spoke, leaning closer so only you could hear, "you know what my mom always used to say about turbulence?"

You shook your head, too nervous to speak. You felt like something was closed over your airway prohibiting proper air intake.

"It's just like jelly on a plate," he continued, a smile playing on his lips. "You know, when you give it a little shake and it wobbles all over the place, but it never splits? That’s all turbulence is. Just a little wobble.”

You tried to picture it—bright red, wobbly jelly quivering on a plate, unbroken. A small unsure smile graced your face at the image.

"Jelly on a plate?" you echoed, the analogy working its way into your mind.

"Yeah," Luke nodded, giving your hand another gentle squeeze. "Planes are built to handle it, just like that jelly. It's annoying, sure, and it may feel scary, but it's not going to hurt us."

As the plane taxied down the runway, you closed your eyes and focused on his previous words. The two of you were connected by a pair of earphones connected to Luke’s phone that echoed the sound of your favourite songs from a playlist he’d compiled for you.

Jelly on a plate.

Jelly on a plate.

The engines roared, and your grip on Luke's hand tightened significantly, your eyes closing out of nerves. To his defence, Luke didn't flinch, and opted to rub his thumb soothingly over your knuckles, trying to squash all of your arising fear.

About half an hour into the flight, the clouds outside causing the plane to shake ever so slightly as you hit some turbulence. Your immediate reaction was to tense up and grip onto your boy.

Luke’s hand gently moved your chin so that you faced him. You looked at him with anxiety filled eyes which he seemed to instantly soother as he smiled and leaned closer.

"Jelly on a plate, remember?" he whispered, and you nodded, taking a breath in before forcing your shoulders to relax.

The rest of the flight, though not completely free of anxiety, had been much more bearable. Every time the plane had wobbled, you repeated the mantra to yourself, and Luke was there as an extra comfort, his hand tangled in yours as he amped up the sound on the playlist.

I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND Luke Hughes X Gf!reader

1. first day at the lake house

“You’re here!”

You stumbled backwards as Luke’s body engulfed you, the force from his run down the driveway to meet you, pushing you back. His arms held you tight to his chest, your body squished in his firm hold. You hadn’t seen your boyfriend in three weeks, due to you visiting family, and to say the boy missed you would be an understatement.

“Missed you,” you breathed out, manoeuvring your arms around his waist.

"I missed you more," Luke mumbled into your hair, his voice low, only for you to hear. His grip tightened as if he feared you might disappear again if he let go. You could feel his heartbeat drumming against your chest, fast and steady, as you leaned further into his warmth.

Luke didn’t move, relishing the feeling of you in his arms.

"I'm not going anywhere," you promised, giving him a warm smile.

Luke's grip tightened even more for a moment before he finally loosened it slightly, just enough to pull back and look at you. He smiled, a soft, relieved smile that made you want to melt, a smile reserved solely for you.

"Good," he said simply, pressing a gentle kiss to your forehead. "Because I don't think I could handle it if you did, three weeks was enough.”

"Well, I'm here now, and I'm not planning on leaving anytime soon." You laughed softly, the sound soft and muffled against his chest.

"Oh god, look at them! Absolutely horrible."

You slightly broke away from Luke, as Jack’s teasing voice carried across the driveway. You glanced towards the sound, noticing both Quinn and Jack watching the two of you. You raised your hand bashfully and waved at both of the brothers.

"Luke, you're so clingy, man!" Quinn groaned, his eyes rolling as Luke turned to fake laugh at them.

"Yeah, seriously," Jack added, his lips drawn back into a smirk. "You act like she’s been gone for a year or something."

"Shut up, you two," Luke called back, rolling his eyes, but you could see the hint of a smile tugging at his lips.

You couldn't help but laugh along with them.

"It's okay, Luke," you reassured, looking up at him, as he pulled you in for another kiss. "I like that you're kind of clingy."

His lips met yours in a delicate kiss as Jack and Quinn both groaned

“Disgusting, dude!”

“Get a room!”

2. the boat day

The boat bobbed gently beneath you from where you were seated comfortably on Luke's lap, his arms wrapped securely around you as you leaned against his chest.

The sun was shining down on Michigan, leaving the perfect opportunity for a boat day. A few friends of the brothers were scattered around the boat, chatting and laughing, soaking up all the sun they could.

Every so often, you felt Luke's lips press a light kiss to your shoulder or his fingers brush against your arm. His head rested atop of yours, the hum of his heartbeat thrumming beside your ear.

"You know, she’s going to melt onto your lap, if you keep her there all day," Quinn teased from the wheel of the boat, shading his eyes with his hand as he looked over at you both.

You rolled your eyes but couldn't help but smile as Luke buried his face in your neck.

“I’m comfortable, thanks." He mumbled against your skin, his lips pressing against the fading purple he’d marked you with last night.

"Yeah, I bet you are,” Jack snorted before settling his gaze on you. “You know you’re stuck with him like this… he hasn't let you out of his sight since we got on the boat."

“Not just on the boat!” Cole called out from the bow of the boat.

Luke chuckled, his chest vibrating against your back. "Can't help it," he said, kissing the top of your head. "I like having her close."

"You both need to cool off, I mean we all knew Luke was clingy, but this is a new level,” Trevor piped up from the bow, “I feel like we need to start calling you Velcro for you to stop."

From beside Trevor, Cole tilted his head back in a small laugh, nearly losing the drink in his hand in the process.

Luke chuckled along, but his hold on you didn't loosen. If anything, he seemed to pull you even closer, his fingers intertwining with yours.

“You two are almost sickening,” Coke taunted with his lovable smile.

“Jealous, Caulfield?” You finally asked with a raised brow that was paired with a teasing grin.

"You caught me," Cole feigned a dramatic sigh, pressing a hand to his heart.

You giggled as Luke suddenly stood up with you in his arms, the boat steady on the water.

“Luke, I swear,” you threatened, clinging to your boy as he approached the back of the boat.

“Didn’t you hear Trevor, sweet girl?” He mused, nose brushing your cheekbone. “We need to cool off.”

Without another word, Luke jumped into the water with you still firm in his hold, a soft scream escaping your grinning lips.

3. the party

The Hughes brothers were known for their annual summer party filled with various friends and NHL players, and tonight was no exception. The house was alive with loud music and laughter, all of which you’d ended up getting lost in when trying to grab a drink.

You wandered through the crowd, looking for a drunken Luke. Your boyfriend had been given a ‘get out of jail free’ card from his brothers for this years party.

Luke could drink what he wanted as long as he was responsible enough.

You’d gotten separated from him when you’d gone to get water for Luke and yourself, and now you searched for your boyfriend’s curly mop amongst the crowds.

Meanwhile, Luke was on the other side of the house, clutching an almost emptied beer and animatedly talking to Jack and Trevor, who both watched with signature shit-eating smirks. Luke’s face was flushed, whether from the alcohol or his words, it was hard to tell.

"You don't understand," Luke slurred, waving his hand. "I love her so much. Like, really, really love her."

"We know, Luke,” Jack rolled his eyes, prying the drink from his younger brother’s hands. “You've told us about a hundred times tonight alone."

"Yeah, man, we get it,” Trevor laughed, taking a sip of his drink. “You’re head over heels…but, where is she?"

Jack shot Trevor a glare, knowing his younger brother would instantly lose his shit and be intolerable when alerted to the fact you were nowhere to be seen.

Luke's eyes widened suddenly, his heart dropping as he looked around the living room for you.

"Oh my God, I can't believe I lost her,” he stammered, running a hand through his mussed curls. “She's the best thing that ever happened to me, and I lost her!”

Jack put a hand on Luke's shoulder, trying to calm him down.

"Relax, Luke,” Jack reassured, placing down his beer. “She probably got caught talking to someone, she’ll find us eventually."

“Y’know I didn’t believe Jack when he said you're like a lovesick puppy,” Trevor began, his eyebrows raised. “I’m starting to believe him now.”

"I can't help it," Luke briefly with a pout, his eyes flitting around the room, entirely focused on finding you.

Just then, you turned the corner into the living room and spotted the trio amongst the crowd. Your heart did a tiny, little flip at the sight of Luke’s puppy-dog eyes scanning the room desperately.

His head suddenly snapped in your direction, and a huge grin spread across his face. You sheepishly smiled and wiggled your fingers in a wave as the boy jumped to his feet

"There she is!" he practically shouted at Jack and Trevor, making his way over to you with surprising speed given the crowd.

When he reached you, he pulled you into a tight embrace, lifting your feet off the ground slightly as the drinks in your hands splashed dangerously. You shook your head at the smell of alcohol wafting from him, knowing how extra clingy he managed to get when slightly intoxicated.

I was so worried," he mumbled sadly into your ear, as you handed him the water and tilted your head to listen. "I thought I'd lost you."

"I was just getting some water for us,” you hummed, combing your free fingers through his unruly curls. “I was just looking for you too."

He set you down but kept you close, his eyes serious despite his tipsy state.

“I love you so much," he spoke earnestly, his tone almost pleading. "I can't even explain it…you make me so happy."

You felt a warmth spread through you, his drunken words filling your heart. You knew that despite his intoxication, your boy was an absolute sucker for you.

"Love you too, Luke,” you softly answered, “…now I think it’s time you drink that up, you don’t want to be sick in the morning.”

Jack and Trevor, standing a few feet away, exchanged amused glances, watching as Luke admired you as if you were the rarest diamond amongst countless lumps of coal.

“He’s down so bad,” Trevor whistled, raising his own drink to his lips as the two watched you talk away to Luke who steadily drank the water you’d given him.

“Oh, bud,” Jack sighed, pinching his brow. “You’ve got no idea.”

4. dinner with the hughes family

You nervously fidgeted with the rings on your fingers as you stood outside of the restaurant beside Luke. Tonight you’d be having dinner with the Hughes family, including Ellen and Jim, at a fancy restaurant.

You’d met Luke’s parents multiple times before but your nerves still shook. You were never a severely social person and you were terrified that one slip-up around his parents would cost you the greatest relationship you’d been in.

“Hey, sweet girl,” Luke mumbled, breaking your stupor as he took your fidgeting hands in his own. The two of you had driven together whilst Quinn and Jack had opted to pick up their mom and dad.

“They already love you,” Luke continued, his thumb smoothing gentle circles over your skin, his eyes locking with yours. “Mom won’t stop asking me about you, there’s no need to be worried.”

He bent down ever so carefully and pressed a gentle kiss to your forehead, almost instantaneously relieving most of the nerves swirling in the pit of your stomach. You took a deep breath, trying to steady your racing heart. Luke’s reassurance helped a little, but you couldn’t completely shake the nerves.

He leaned in, his arm wrapping around your waist as he led you inside

As you walked into the restaurant, the two you weaved your way towards the rest of the Hughes family at a table near the back. The four of them were already seated, causing your stomach to knot.

That knot, however, loosened as soon as you witnessed Ellen's face light up when she saw you, and she immediately stood to give you a warm hug.

"There you guys are!" Ellen spoke with a smile that reached her eyes, her gaze locked on you. "It's so good to see you again."

"How have you been?" Jim offered a friendly nod from his seat as Luke helped you pull out your own before sitting down in the middle of you and Jack.

"I've been good, thank you. How about you guys?" You smiled, feeling a bit more at ease, Luke’s hand intertwined with your own, squeezing lightly as if to anchor you.

Throughout the dinner, your boyfriend never strayed far from you, whether it be his hand resting reassuringly on your knee under the table, brushing a hair out of your face, his fingers smoothing circles on your palm or his leg brushing against yours.

Every so often, Luke would lean over to whisper a sweet nothing or joke in your ear, making you laugh and easing your simmering nerves. He'd even tried to sneakily press a kiss to your temple or cheek, which you’d rolled your eyes at. You loved how clingy your boy was but you didn’t want to make dinner awkward with excessive PDA.

When the main courses were served, Jack leaned back in his chair, a mischievous glint in his eye as he looked between you and Luke.

“You know, Mom, Dad, we've got to talk about something," he grinned, still glancing between the two of you.

"Oh?" Ellen asked, her eyes flitting towards Jack.

"Yeah, it's about Luke,” Jack tried to stifle his chuckles. “Ever since he bagged y/n, he's been like superglue,”

“He can't go five minutes without her," Quinn added with a shit-eating smirk.

"Hah, hah, so funny." Luke rolled his eyes, squeezing your hand, as heat rose to your cheeks.

"Oh, you boys,” Ellen chuckled, shaking her head as she wiped her mouth on a napkin. Her kind eyes fell on yours as you winced. “Out of the three of them, Luke's always been the affectionate one.”

You ducked your head with a bashful smile and squeezed Luke's hand as he watched you with love-shining eyes.

+1. the aftermath of dinner

You and Luke walked just slightly behind his brothers and parents as you walked towards an ice cream shop the family typically frequented during the summer. Your arms were linked as Luke babbled on about anything and everything, your full attention on him.

Ellen glanced back, a warm smile spreading across her face as she watched Luke lean in to whisper something in your ear, causing you to laugh softly. His arm was draped casually around your shoulders, fingers tracing light patterns on your arm.

“Look at them,” Ellen murmured to Jim, who allowed himself to look back.

“They're good together,” Jim replied, his voice filled with pride. “I don’t think I’ve seen him so happy without skates under his feet.”

“Remember when he used to be that shy, quiet kid who wouldn’t even look at girls, let alone talk to them?” Ellen chuckled, linking her arm through his. “Now look at him, head over heels.”

“Yeah, he’s grown up a lot…and she’s been great for him.” Jim hummed, “You can tell he’s more confident, more sure of himself.”

As everyone reached the ice cream shop, you and Luke lagged a bit further behind, completely lost in your own little world. Ellen watched as Luke stopped to tuck a strand of hair behind your ear, his eyes never leaving yours. He seemed to say something else that made you gently hit his arm and giggle before he leaned down to press a gentle kiss to your lips.

Luke was a very clingy person, so much so that at times it could be classed as disgustingly overwhelming, but you didn’t care.

He was yours to keep and you loved every clingy bone in his body.

𝐔𝐍𝐏𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 | 𝐋𝐔𝐊𝐄 𝐇𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐄𝐒

 |

summary: you and luke say your goodbyes to jack and step into the newest chapter of your lives.

warnings: fluff, insinuation of smut towards the end

word count: 1.12k

The living room was a chaotic sea of boxes, turning your new apartment into a maze that the three of you had to carefully navigate. Some boxes were stacked precariously high, swaying slightly with each step you took, as if daring gravity to take hold. Others were haphazardly strewn across the floor, creating narrow pathways that forced you to sidestep and twist around just to get from one end of the room to the other. The faint scent of fresh paint still lingered in the air, mingling with the earthy smell of cardboard, a constant reminder that this place was truly new — truly yours.

“Oh god, this is going to take forever to unpack,” you sighed, brushing a stray strand of hair out of your face as you stood amidst the chaos that had consumed your new home. The task before you felt insurmountable, like you’d need a week just to clear a path to the kitchen.

Luke stepped closer, his presence a comforting anchor amid the disarray. Wrapping his arm around your waist, he pulled you into his side, his warmth easing the stress that had begun to coil in your chest. “Yeah…” he murmured, his voice low and soothing, before leaning in to press a kiss to your temple. “Maybe we start that tomorrow.”

Jack, who had been lugging boxes back and forth from the truck all afternoon, dropped the latest one—a heavy box labelled Kitchen—onto the couch with a thud. He let out an exaggerated sigh as he wiped the sweat from his brow with the sleeve of his shirt. “You sure you got everything?” he asked, casting a weary glance around the room that seemed to get more cluttered with each passing minute.

“I did a final scan right before we left… I think we’ve got everything,” you answered.

“And Jack, even if we forgot something, it’s not like we’re far,” Luke added.

After living with Jack for Luke’s first season in New Jersey, you’d finally decided it was time to get your own place. Jack had been a great roommate, but you and Luke had long reached the point in your relationship where it was time to be on your own. Although Jack had long joked about wanting you out of “his house”, you knew deep down he was going to miss having you as a roommate.

You slipped out of Luke’s grasp, taking a few steps toward Jack and giving him a playful poke in the side. “You know, Jack, I think you’re gonna miss me when I’m not here to clean up after your messes.”

Jack scoffed, though the smile he tried to suppress betrayed him. “Please, I’ll finally have some peace and quiet without the two of you bickering constantly.”

You and Luke both scoffed, seeing right through him. “Yeah right, you’ll be lost without us here.” you teased.

He rolled his eyes, but there was a hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “Yeah, yeah. Whatever helps you sleep at night.”

Luke chuckled, shaking his head at his brother. “You know, you can admit you’ll miss her, right? I know I would.”

Jack shook his head, trying to play it cool, but the small crack in his facade was obvious. “I’ll survive. I mean, who needs a sister-in-law who steals the last of the cereal?”

You laughed, the sound filling the room as you pulled Jack into a quick hug. Despite all the teasing, you knew Jack had genuinely enjoyed having you around. He had never complained about the extra person in his space, and you suspected he would miss the lively energy you and Luke brought to the apartment.

“Thanks for putting up with us, Jack,” you said softly, squeezing him a little tighter before letting go. “And don’t worry, we’ll still come around to raid your cereal.”

Jack smirked, shaking his head. “Just don’t make a habit of it.”

As you stepped back, Luke was quick to wrap his arm around your shoulders, pulling you close once more. The three of you stood there for a moment, surrounded by the boxes that represented a new chapter in your lives. The apartment you and Luke had chosen together was just a few blocks away, but it felt like a world of difference. It was the first place that would truly be yours—no longer just a guest in someone else’s home but a space where you and Luke could continue building your life together.

Jack gave you a mock salute as he headed toward the door. “Alright, lovebirds, I’m out. Don’t call me to help unpack.”

You grinned, watching him go. “We won’t,” you called after him, your voice filled with affection.

As the door clicked shut behind Jack, you and Luke were left in the stillness of your new apartment. The silence was almost overwhelming, but it was a comforting kind of quiet—the kind that spoke of new beginnings. You glanced around the room, taking in the boxes that surrounded you, before letting out a long, tired sigh and leaving Luke’s comforting grasp. “We should probably get a head start on this.”

Luke groaned, but you both knew you were right. Together, you tackled the important things—the bed, a few personal effects, and other essentials you’d need right away. When exhaustion finally got the better of you, you collapsed onto the couch—the only piece of furniture that wasn’t buried under a mountain of boxes.

Luke’s hand found yours, his fingers intertwining with yours as he gave you a gentle squeeze. “We did it,” he murmured, his voice filled with a mix of disbelief and pride.

“Yeah, we did,” you echoed, leaning your head against his shoulder. The reality of it all was just beginning to sink in. This was your home now. A place that belonged to the two of you, where you could make memories that were just yours.

Luke shifted slightly, turning his head to press a kiss to the top of your head. “I think we should celebrate,” he suggested, a mischievous glint in his eyes that you couldn’t ignore.

You laughed softly, lifting your head to meet his gaze. “Oh? And how do you propose we do that?”

A slow grin spread across Luke’s face, and you didn’t need him to spell it out to know exactly what he had in mind. Luke shifted closer to you, his lips brushing against yours. “We should christen the place,” he murmured.

The wave of exhaustion lifted, a new sensation of excitement filling your bones. You didn’t need any more convincing. The boxes could wait until tomorrow. Tonight, you had more important things to attend to. With a laugh, you tugged him off the couch and led him toward the bedroom.

violet fluff, luke and his grumpy gf who isn’t always the best at saying or showing her affection,

"I do love you, you know. Even if I'm shit at showing it."

thank you for requesting!🫶🏽

29. “I do love you, you know. Even if I’m shit at showing it.”

.

Usually, you were never one to let comments get to you.

It was something you were well aware came with territory of dating someone in the spotlight, but it didn’t turn you away. You weren’t one to let the opinions of people you knew bother you, let alone strangers on the internet hiding behind a screen. It was something you could easily disconnect from, knowing full well most comments were made through a veil of jealousy and envy.

You were secure in your relationship with Luke, why bother with people desperate to poke holes in something they didn’t know the details of?

It had been family skate day with the Devils and you had been told by Luke that the two of you were featured in the video the team posted on Instagram. You went to look for pure curiosity reasons, maybe drop a like before moving on with the day. You weren’t even sure why you looked at the comments. You weren’t sure why a few of them stuck out.

user: she literally looks like she wants to be anywhere else, idk why luke is with her

And maybe in the long run, it wouldn’t have bothered you. But then you found yourself with the team a week or so later, at some random bar in Jersey celebrating another win to the streak. You were settled in the seat beside Luke, his arm over the back of your chair and a beer in his other hand whilst you nursed a vodka coke he had gotten you.

“Oh, cover your eyes, people!” Curtis had laughed from the other side of the table, a teasing smile on his face. “They are within five inches of each other. Don’t get too excited, Luke!”

And—

You get it. You two didn’t show much PDA around the team or anyone in general. It wasn’t your kind of style. Luke sometimes held your hand or pulled you close, maybe a kiss to the top of your head. But overall, neither one of you was overly affectionate, especially in public.

And it never bothered you before. It still didn’t. But maybe it did peeve you off just a little that people just assumed it meant something more, that the lack of affection was telling of something else, that you didn’t—

“Luke?”

“Hm?” The boy hummed, his eyes glued to his phone screen as he aimlessly scrolled through what he missed in the old UMICH chat. His head was on your lap, his body sprawled over the couch whilst you were flicking through random channels. It had been a fairly normal evening for you both, minus the thoughts plaguing you.

“You know I love you, right?”

Luke paused, drawing his gaze away from his phone to look up at you with a frown. “What?” He questioned, an almost disbelieving laugh leaving his lips. “I mean, yeah. But where is this coming from?”

“Nothing, I—” You cut yourself off, shaking your head as you reached down to push some hair away from his face. He leaned into the touch. “I do love you, you know. Even if I’m shit at showing it.”

“I think you show it just fine, babe,” he assured you, his fingers wrapping around your wrist so he could tug your hand closer and press a soft kiss to your palm. It made your lips twitch upwards. “I know you’re obsessed with me, no need to go screaming it from the rooftops.”

You scoffed, tugging your hand away. “Loser.”

“Your loser that you love,” Luke retorted, a boyish grin on his face that you were endlessly fond of.

“Yeah, unfortunately.”

wait i’m crying imagine helping luke with his curl routine and you being the only person he trusts to touch his hair

“luke, hold still,” you tell him, massaging the diffuser around his head.

“it tickles. and it’s really warm,” he argues, twitching again, causing you to huff in frustration.

luke’s currently crouched down in front of you in his en-suite bathroom, sitting not so still while you try to do his newly implemented curl routine.

“honeybee, my knees hurt, we gotta take a break,” he pleads, bouncing slightly.

you turn off the hair dryer and let him stretch his legs to his full height.

“you know, if you’d let me make you an appointment at a salon we wouldn’t be in this predicament,” you tell him, looking up at his lop-sided curls.

a few weeks ago you convinced luke to start a curl care routine, knowing his hair was in desperate need of some TLC. when you first started dating, you saw the 3in1 bottle sitting in his otherwise empty shower and immediately dragged him to the nearest salon supply store to get a curl specific shampoo and conditioner set.

once he finally agreed to start a whole routine (with your help, of course) you picked out several creams and gels to lather into his hair after every shower.

so your new pre-bedtime routine, three nights out of the week, is making sure his hair is hydrated and taken care of. when you suggested letting a professional do a generalized curl care appointment to get him started, luke refused, arguing that you could do it just as good as any salon can.

“i told you, i don’t want them touching my hair,” he reiterates to you, giving the same response every time you suggest it to him.

“luke, they’re literally professionals. they know tricks that i don’t. maybe they could even do something to your hair that lasts for a few weeks, so we wouldn’t have to do this several nights a week. plus, it would help when you’re on the road,” you try to persuade him, reaching up and ruffling his curls around with both hands, trying to keep it from drying unevenly.

the first time he was on the road and it was a hair night, you tried to call him and walk him through it, but he claimed his hair didn’t turn out as soft and shiny as when you do it.

the next time, you had jack come and watch how you did it one night, having him step in to help luke since they typically room together, but he said jack didn’t do it right and he came out looking like he had a clown afro the next day.

“i don’t care. it’s just hair, it can wait until i’m back home,” he grabs your hands, pulling them from his hair and placing them on his shoulders.

you scoff in offense, swatting at his chest. “it is not just hair. it’s one of my favorite features of yours!”

“still doesn’t mean i’m going to let some stranger at a salon get all touchy with it,” he shrugs.

you roll your eyes at his stubbornness, not knowing why it’s such a big deal.

“if you don’t want to spend the money on it, i’ll literally pay for it. i just think it’d do some good, i don’t know why you’re so against it,” you offer.

luke shakes his head no, reaching up to move a stray piece of your own hair out of your face. “s’not the money,” he assures you. “it won’t feel as good as when you do it. love the feeling of your fingers all in my hair. s’comforting,” he says so casually, not even aware that his words caused butterflies to erupt in your belly.

you feel your face flush, biting your lip to hide the smile trying to break out on your face.

“well i’m not saying i’ll stop doing it. i’m just saying that maybe a trip to a salon once a month might prevent more bad hair days on the road,” you try to compromise, not wanting him to know how much his words affected you. you didn’t want to give him more reasons to refuse the idea.

“and i’m just saying, i don’t want anyone but you touching my hair,” he leans down to press his forehead against yours, locking his wide eyes onto yours dramatically.

before you can get a reply out of your mouth, he leans forward and presses his lips to yours, taking your hands off of his shoulders and bringing them up to your hair, emphasizing his point.

you toy with the flat curls, forgetting what you were meant to be doing until your fingers came into contact with a wet patch.

pulling back from the kiss abruptly, luke lets out a frustrated whine while chasing your lips with his.

“we have to finish drying your hair! if i don’t finish it soon it’s gonna dry all flat on one side because we didn’t diffuse it properly,” you pull back from him completely, grabbing the abandoned hair dryer on the counter.

luke groans, stomping over to stand in front of you, crouching back into his earlier position.

“just hurry. if we do this too much longer i’m going to have to tell my coach i can’t skate because i have stiff knees from my girlfriend’s curl routine she makes me do,” he crosses his arm and pouts like a child.

“keep up the whining and i’ll make jack do it next time,” you threaten, turning the hairdryer on and continuing the task at hand.

luke’s body tenses. “i swear to god if you bring jack over here to do my hair again i’m shaving it off.”

“you wouldn’t,” you gasp at him, not believing he just said such a thing.

“try me,” he responds, smirking at you through the large mirror.

violet fluff, luke! “this is my girlfriend everyone!” and “i think my family/friends really liked you. maybe more than they liked me.” 😋😋

thank you for requesting!🫶🏽

55. “This is my girlfriend everyone!”

.

“Luke—”

“I need to tell everyone!”

“Please, get down from there.”

“M’not high enough!”

“You’re drunk!”

“Am not!”

You let out a heavy sigh, stuck between wanting to look away from the train wreck in front of you and terrified that if you even blinked, something bad would happen to the boy. Because, unfortunately for you, drunk Luke Hughes was a bit of an adventurer when he was the right level of drunk and his current goal was trying to climb onto the makeshift bar.

It had been one last party to close off the season before everyone headed their own ways for the off season. They were ending the season far earlier than they would have liked, but Nico was determined to have a happy send off before everyone ran off to hide away and lick their wounds over the summer. He wanted them to have one last moment as the team they were before it inevitably changed next season.

It was supposed to be chill until Jack and Dawson started handing out their homemade jello shots—and then everything went to shit.

And somewhere along five tester jello shots and a handful of some crazy strong Czech beer that Palat had brought with him, Luke was far too gone to really understand or care about logic or reasoning—like climbing a makeshift bar half-naked was not the way to go.

“Help me,” you pleaded with the older Hughes but Jack only cackled, shaking his head and already reaching for his phone.

“Absolutely fucking not,” he grinned.

You glared at the boy before turning to your boyfriend atop of the bar, attempting your best puppy dog eyes. “Luke, baby, please get down before you hurt yourself.”

But Luke stubbornly shook his head. “I need to tell everyone something very important.”

“Curtis is never letting him live this down,” Jack murmured with a snort.

Luke cleared his throat until all eyes were on him.

“Oh god,” you heard Nico mutter from somewhere behind you.

“This is my girlfriend everyone!” Luke announced as he pointed towards you with a sappy grin on his face. “And I love her very much and I want to marry her. Right now.”

“You aren’t in Vegas, buddy,” John called out to him.

Luke paused before he spoke again. “I am booking tickets to Vegas right now to marry my pretty girlfriend!”

“Oh my god,” you mumbled, stuck somewhere between a laugh and a groan as you felt your whole face heat up.

“Mom is gonna be so pissed this is how he proposed,” Jack commented, turning the camera to you and giggling when you tried to smack it out of his hands.

“He’s not serious,” you said, though that didn’t help the fact your face was still burning up.

“I am so serious!” Luke called out.

“Yeah, well, get down and then we will see because I am not interested in a fiancé with broken limbs,” you retorted, letting out a sigh of relief as he began to climb down from the bar.

“So, Vegas?”

“Shut up, Jack.”

“There goes my offer to be your maid of honour.”

Congratulations on 10K!

Can I order a violet fluff for Luke Hughes with the prompts 32 and 36? Thank you in advance!

thank you for requesting!🫶🏽

36. “She’s so pretty, I think I’m going to faint.”

.

“Woah, I have soooo many fingers.”

Ellen covered her mouth to smother her laugh as she watched her youngest son stare around the room with wide, curious eyes. He had only just woken up after the procedure, his cheeks full of gauze and his words slurred from the anaesthetic. She had run through the post-op care with the dentist and nurses, letting Luke fully wake up before they headed back to the house.

“Mom,” he murmured. “I think I’m an alien.”

“You’re very human, Luke,” Ellen assured him, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder.

“I am? I don’t—” But he cut himself when the door opened again.

You slipped inside, flashing Ellen a sheepish smile before your eyes fell onto your boyfriend. You grinned a little at his chubby cheeks and glossy eyes, resisting the urge to coo at how much he looked like a cute chipmunk.

“Sorry, I’m late,” you apologised as you closed the door behind you. “My class ran over but I rushed over as soon as I could.”

“It’s fine, honey,” Ellen assured you before she turned to look at her son who was insistently tugging on her sleeve. “Luke, what is it?”

“Mom,” he murmured, embarrassed and flustered with his cheeks flushing pink.

Ellen raised her brows. “Are you not going to say hi?”

“She’s so pretty, I think I’m going to faint,” he whispered in a loud voice, looking at you in utter adoration. “Like, so so pretty.”

Ellen pressed her lips to hold back her laugh. “Well, honey, she is your girlfriend.”

“Girlfriend?” Luke repeated in awe before turning to look at you, his cheeks still burning pink. “My girlfriend? I’m your boyfriend?”

You laughed, nodding your head as you closed the distance between you both. “Yeah, baby, you’re my boyfriend and I’m your girlfriend. Cool, huh?”

“So cool,” Luke mumbled before frowning, his brows furrowing together. “Do we kiss?”

You cleared your throat, shooting Ellen a glance before looking back down at Luke. “Yeah, we kiss.”

“But we can’t anymore,” Luke murmured with a frown as he lightly poked his chubby cheeks. “I can’t kiss my girlfriend!”

“We will find a solution,” you laughed as you reached for his hand before he continued to irritate his cheeks. “C’mon, now, let’s get you home where Jack and Quinn can make fun of your cute chipmunk cheeks.”

“They are just jealous they don’t have a pretty girlfriend like me,” Luke retorted.

TO HAVE AND TO HOLD Luke Hughes X Wife!reader

“Oh, god,”

“It’s going to be fine,”

“We don’t know that!”

Luke stifled a grin at your response as he watched you pace back and forth on the lake house driveway.

The two of you had been married for three months now, and finally, you were thinking of breaking the news to the Hughes family.

Summer rolled around quicker than you’d anticipated and now you were face to face with the prospect of dropping the biggest secret you and Luke had ever kept.

"Look, it’s not like we’re confessing a crime," Luke tried to reassure you, pushing off the hood of his car and walking over to you, his hands sliding into the pockets of his shorts. "They're going to be happy for us. I mean, it's not like we’re complete strangers, right?"

"Happy?!” You stopped pacing long enough to shoot him a look. “Luke, we got married in Vegas on a whim, and didn’t tell them for three months! What if they freak out?!" He laughed softly, reaching out to take your hand, and pulling you into his chest.

"Hey," he murmured, his voice dropping to that gentle, soothing tone that never failed to calm you, "We did what felt right for us. They’ll understand that."

You sighed, leaning into his embrace, the steady thump of his heart under your ear doing wonders to slow your racing thoughts. He was right, you knew that, of course, but the thought of facing his parents, his brothers, and telling them you’d eloped without them felt like stepping off a tall cliff without a parachute.

"What if they’re mad?" you whispered, voicing the fear that had been gnawing at you since the moment the decision was made.

"They won’t be," Luke assured you, pressing a soft kiss to the top of your head. "And if they are, they’ll get over it…eventually."

You couldn’t help but laugh at that, the sound muffled against his chest.

“Great pep talk, Hughes,” you teased, burying your head to his chest.

He pulled back just enough to tilt your chin up with his fingers, so you were looking into his eyes that crinkled with his smile.

"Come on, Mrs. Hughes," he teased, a soft smile playing on his lips. "Time to face your in-laws."

A groan ripped from your throat as you allowed him to drag you towards the house.

The sound of laughter and conversation greeted you as you and Luke stepped through the doors of the lake house. The smell of food grilling floated in from the thrown-open windows leading back garden.

Luke squeezed your hand, giving you one last reassuring smile before you both delved into the epicentre of the chaos— the kitchen.

Ellen stood at the stove, stirring a pot of something that smelled heavenly, while Jim was outside, manning the grill. You and Luke lingered in the doorway watching as Jack and Quinn set the table, arguing back and forth about some stats or whatnot.

It was the kind of scene that made you feel both comforted and anxious, knowing that you were about to change everything with just a few words.

“Hey, mom,” Luke greeted, his voice light as he moved to his mother’s side, his hand on her shoulder.

Ellen glanced up at her son with a smile, kissing his cheek and pulling him into a hug.

“I was wondering when you two were going to stop dawdling and come in,” she teased, extending her arms towards you. “y/n, sweetheart, how are you?”

You moved into Ellen’s open arms, allowing yourself to be enveloped in her warmth. The woman squeezed you lightly before you pulled away.

“I’m good,” you mustered a smile, “How can we both help?”

Ellen glanced behind her at the dinner and then towards you and Luke.

“You can help chop these vegetables,” she spoke, gesturing to the cutting board laden with fresh produce. “And you,” she added, turning to Luke, “can go grab drinks from the fridge.”

You nodded, grateful for something to do with your hands as Luke’s hand gently squeezed your hip before he moved past you towards the fridge.

As you started to chop the vegetables, you could feel Luke’s eyes on you. The conversation flowed easily around you, you chatted away to Ellen about life in New Jersey and your parents, but your mind was racing, trying to figure out how to find the right moment to bring up the big news.

You were just starting to relax, distracted by your thoughts, when you accidentally nicked your finger with the knife. A soft hiss escaped your lips as you winced, lifting your finger away from the veg so as not to taint them.

Before you could even blink, Luke was at your side, his hand gently cradling yours, examining it.

“C’mere,” Luke murmured, gently tugging you towards the kitchen sink as he turned it on. The cold water washed away the droplets of blood pooling on the surface of your fingertip.

“Here you go,” Ellen calmly interjected, handing Luke a small bandaid. The boy hummed a ‘thanks,” before drying off your finger and wrapping the bandaid around it.

“There,” Luke stated proudly, holding up your finger so you could admire its wrapping.

“My hero,” you mused, nudging your shoulder into him with a soft smile.

"Can’t have my wife getting maimed on my watch,” Luke joked, pressing a gentle kiss to your fingertip.

You hummed knowingly rolling your eyes. Ever since you'd gotten married, he took every opportunity to call you his wife or Mrs. Hughes.

At first, it was unfamiliar and filled with giddiness but now it was simply an everyday occurrence.

You resumed your chopping before your head suddenly whipped upwards. The kitchen around you had fallen silent and when you turned around, all eyes were on you and Luke.

“Oh, no,” you muttered under your breath, feeling the heat rise to your cheeks. You hadn’t planned on the news coming out this way, but, now there was no turning back.

Ellen was the first to break the silence, her eyes wide with surprise.

“Did you just say… wife?” She uttered, her eyes jumping between you and Luke.

Luke didn’t miss a beat.

He flashed that bashful smile of his as he scratched his head.

“Yep,” he answered, his arm dropping to wrap around your waist and pull you close. “We got married.”

For a moment, the only sound was the sizzle of the food out back and the ticking of the clock on the wall.

Ellen’s mouth hung open in shock, and Jim, who had just come back inside from checking the grill, looked like he’d just been hit with a ton of bricks.

Jack and Quinn exchanged wide-eyed glances, clearly processing the news as you and Luke shifted uneasily.

“You… got married?” Jim finally echoed, his voice filled with disbelief.

“Yeah…,” Luke added, as if that explained everything and magically made it sound all the more sane. “We, uh, got married.”

“In Vegas,” you added quickly.

“For real?” Jack’s brows knitted together as he looked between the two of you. “Like, no joke—married?”

You tightly nodded, trying to muster a smile, but the tension in the room was palpable.

“Three months ago,” Luke continued, his grip on you tightening.

Jim was the first to speak again, his voice careful. “Three months?” he echoed, trying to process the information. “And you didn’t think to tell us sooner?”

There was a pause, and you scanned their faces for any sign of disapproval.

Ellen’s face was harder to gauge, it was laced with shock, concern, and a hint of hurt. She opened her mouth to say something, then closed it again, her gaze flickering to you, then back to Luke.

“We wanted to,” Luke rubbed the back of his neck, his confidence waning. “but we weren’t sure how you’d react. We didn’t want to… you know, upset anyone.”

“Upset anyone?” Ellen’s voice was a mix of surprise and confusion. “Luke, this is a huge thing! You’re married. We’re your family. We should’ve been there, or at least known about it.”

You felt a pang of guilt at her words. She wasn’t yelling or angry, but the disappointment in her eyes was clear. You’d feared this reaction, this sense of having let them down by keeping something so significant a secret.

“It just…happened,” you feebly explained, your words tumbling out in a rush. “We didn’t plan it. We were in Vegas, and it felt right at the time, so we did it. But we were scared to tell you, scared you might think we’d made a mistake.”

“But…three months?” Quinn finally spoke up, his voice hesitant. “Why didn’t you tell us sooner?”

You swallowed hard, feeling the pressure of the moment. You could feel your heart pounding in your chest as you searched for the right words.

“We weren’t sure how to,” you began, your voice quieter than you intended. “…we just needed time to process it ourselves before telling everyone.”

Jack, seemed unusually serious as he leaned against the counter, his arms crossed.

“I mean, getting married is a big deal,” he spoke up, his tone bordering careful rather than critical. “It’s just… surprising that you did it without any of us knowing.”

Ellen finally found her voice, and when she spoke, it was tinged with the kind of worry only a mother could possess.

“Are you sure this was the right thing to do?” she asked, her gaze softening as it landed on you and Luke. “Marriage is…it’s a lot. Especially with everything else going on in your lives.”

Luke’s grip on your waist tightened ever so slightly, as you shifted closer to him.

“We’re sure, Mom,” he said, his tone gentle but firm. “I know it’s a lot to take in, and it’s probably not how you imagined it would happen, but… we love each other. This felt right to us…I was already planning on proposing this year, Vegas just sped things up for me.”

There was another long pause and you could see the wheels turning in everyone’s heads, trying to process the news.

Finally, Jim spoke up, his voice strained.

“It’s just a shock, is all,” he cleared his throat, his gaze softening as he looked at you both. “We didn’t see this coming, and…we always imagined we’d be there for this. To see our son get married, to welcome you into the family the right way…I guess we’re just trying to wrap our heads around it.”

“I mean marriage it's…it’s a really big thing,” Ellen repeated herself as she nodded.

“We know,” Luke spoke again, your hand reaching for his to anchor you. “And we didn’t take it lightly. We just… we couldn’t wait.”

Quinn exchanged a glance with Jack, then looked back at you and Luke.

“Well,” he huffed, a small smile starting to tug at the corners of his mouth, “I guess if anyone was going to do something like this, it would be you two.”

“Yeah, this is classic Luke,” Jack chuckled, the tension starting to ease as he uncrossed his arms and shook his head. “Always doing things his own way.”

“I mean, I always knew you two would get married,” Ellen spoke again, her eyes misting over as she looked at both of you. "y/n was always the daughter I never had, but I just thought... we'd be there, that we'd all get to celebrate together."

Her words hung in the air, heavy with the downtrodden weight of what she wasn’t saying; that she felt left out of one of the most important moments in her son’s life. You felt your heart clench with guilt.

Luke must have felt the same, as he let out a small sigh, running his hand through his hair.

“I know, Mom, I’m sorry,” he apologised softly. “We didn’t mean to hurt you or Dad or anyone. We were just…It felt like something we had to do, just the two of us. But that doesn’t mean you’re any less important to us. We still want to celebrate with you.”

“What’s done is done, and if this is what makes you happy, then we’re happy for you.” Jim stepped closer, placing a comforting hand on Ellen’s shoulder. “It’s just going to take a minute to adjust.”

“We love you both, so much,” Ellen spoke, her voice trembling slightly. She turned towards you, taking your face in her hands. “And I’m so happy you’re officially a part of the family.”

Tears welled up in your eyes as Ellen pulled you into another tight hug. You could feel her hold you close, and for the first time since stepping foot in the lake house, the anxiety that had been clawing at you began to ebb away into the abyss.

When she finally pulled back, she gave you a soft, reassuring smile, her thumb gently smoothing away a stray tear from your cheek.

“We’re just surprised, sweetheart,” she whispered, “but that doesn’t mean we aren’t happy.”

Jim stepped forward, his expression softening as he extended his arms to both, you and Luke.

“Congratulations, you two,” he nodded, pulling you into a hug that was just as warm as Ellen’s. “We’re proud of you.”

The knot of tension in your chest loosened even more as Luke’s brothers approached, each of them wearing their amusement across their faces.

Quinn was the first to reach out, clapping Luke on the shoulder before pulling you into a brief, but sincere, hug.

“Well, I guess that makes you officially part of the chaos,” he joked, his voice lighthearted. “Always knew you would be eventually.”

Jack grinned, shaking his head in mock disbelief as he took his turn to hug you both.

“Congrats, guys,” he quipped, but his brows furrowed. “...but seriously? I was literally in Vegas with you…where was my invitation?!”

“Maybe next time,” you teased, causing Luke’s eyes to darken. His hand spanned across your hip, pulling you back against his chest.

“For my sake, pretty girl, there better be no next time,” he murmured, his lips brushing your ear.

You spun in his hold, your eyes meeting his in a playful challenge, not caring that you were surrounded by his family.

“No next time, huh?” you teased, your voice low and laced with mischief. You could feel the heat from his gaze, how it settled on you in a way that sent a thrill down your spine.

Luke’s hand tightened slightly on your waist, his lips curving into that familiar, boyish grin that always made your heart skip a beat.

“That’s right,” he murmured, his voice deeper, almost more possessive. “You’re stuck with me now, Mrs. Hughes.”

The way he said it, the emphasis he put on your new title, sent a shiver of excitement through you. You couldn’t help the smile that spread across your face, your hands resting against his chest as you leaned in closer.

“I think I’m okay with that,” you whispered back, just loud enough for him to hear, your nose brushing against his.

notes: literally the longest thing i've ever written omg but i hope you guys enjoy!!

The summer sun blazed down on the lake house, casting bright rays onto the water and the worn-down wooden dock, where you and Luke sat side by side, your fingers inches apart but never touching. The shimmering lake stretched out before you, a mirror reflecting the clear blue sky and the occasional ripple from a passing boat. It was the familiar scene of your summers, but this summer felt different — more charged, more intense.

You and Luke had always been inseparable since childhood. The backyard games, the bike races down the hill, the late-night chats under the stars—those moments had forged a bond that felt unbreakable. But beneath the surface of that easy camaraderie, there had always been something more—a secret, unspoken longing that neither of you had dared to voice. As you both grew older, the simple crushes you had harboured blossomed into something more profound, but you both chose to keep those feelings hidden, afraid of ruining the one relationship that had always been your rock.

This summer, as you and Luke reunited at the lake house, the tension between you was palpable. The familiar comfort of your shared experiences was now tinged with a new, almost unbearable intensity. Every look you exchanged seemed to linger longer than usual, every touch felt more significant. The boundary between friendship and something more had become increasingly blurred, and it was becoming harder to ignore.

One morning, as you were in the kitchen making breakfast, Luke appeared in the doorway. His presence was as familiar as the morning sun, but today, there was something different in his eyes—an earnestness that made your heart race.

“Hey, wanna go on a boat ride with me?” he asked, his voice casual but with an undertone that you couldn’t quite place.

You glanced up from your toast, meeting his gaze. “Yeah, sure,” you replied, a slight smile tugging at your lips as you finished buttering your piece of toast. “Quinn and Jack coming?”

“No, no,” he said shaking his head, a small smile tugging on his lips. “Just me ‘n you.”

The simplicity of his offer was almost too loaded to process. You could feel the heat of the sun on your skin and the way the space between you seemed to shrink. You nodded, feeling a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation.

“Y-yeah sounds good,” you say. “Just let me finish breakfast and then I’ll go get ready.”

“Of course, take your time,” Luke said, his eyes lingering on you for a moment longer before he turned and left the kitchen. You finished your breakfast in a daze, your mind racing with thoughts about the boat ride.

After breakfast, you quickly changed into your swimsuit, grabbing a hoodie from the pile of clothing that accumulated on the armchair in the corner of your room. You examined it quickly, realizing it was one of Luke’s Michigan hoodies that you had borrowed earlier in the week during a bonfire.

You found Luke waiting at the dock, the boat bobbing gently in the water. “Ready?” he asked, his voice steady as he helped you onto the boat.

“Yeah,” you replied, settling into one of the seats. The boat ride started out in comfortable silence, the only sounds being the hum of the engine and the lapping of water against the hull. As the boat moved further out onto the lake, Luke kept glancing at you, his eyes flicking from the water to your face as if he were trying to gauge your mood.

It wasn’t until you approached the tiny, rocky island, that you realized where Luke was taking you. It was the small island you’d found when just after Luke had gotten his boater’s licence. It had become your own little private oasis that the two of you would visit just to relax, using the privacy of the space to talk about whatever had been bothering you or whatever was on your mind.

Luke put the boat in neutral, allowing it to slowly float up to the rocky shore. He hopped out, steadying it before the bottom would scrape, then turned to you. "Hand me the anchor."

You obliged, tossing the towels to him first, then reaching for the small anchor. As you handed it over, Luke teased, “Not too heavy for you?”

You rolled your eyes behind your shades. “It’s like 13 pounds, Luke. Fuck off.”

He snorted, taking it from your hands and lodging it on a nearby rock. “Here, take my hand so you don’t fall on your face.” Luke said, extending his hand to help you down onto the shore.

You rolled your eyes at his comment, though Luke couldn’t see that behind your shades. You grabbed his hand, feeling the heat of the sun still clinging to his skin. As you hopped down, your foot slipped on the wet surface, and for a split second, you thought you were about to fall face-first into the water.

But Luke’s grip tightened, his other hand reaching out to catch you by the waist, steadying you before you could stumble any further. “Don’t worry, I got you,” he murmured, his voice soft, yet steady.

Your heart skipped a beat, and as you stood there for a moment, pressed against him, you could feel the tension thick between you. “Thanks,” you breathed out, stepping back once you found your balance, though the warmth of his hand lingered.

You moved to the towels Luke had tossed onto the sun-warmed rocks moments ago, straightening one out and lying on it, putting your arm over your eyes. Luke lingered by the boat a moment longer, watching you, his heart still pounding. He took a deep breath and sat beside you, staring out at the water, wondering how much longer he could pretend nothing had changed.

You sat in silence, the birds cawing in the air and the splashing water providing a nice background noise. Luke glanced over at your body lying just a foot away from him, your tanned skin glistening under the beating Michigan sun. Luke couldn’t take his eyes off of you. He felt dirty for staring at you like this; staring at your chest that was just barely covered by a teal bikini, rising and falling rhythmically as you breathed. Your stack of gold necklaces rested on your clavicle and Luke couldn’t fight off the thoughts about marking your collarbone with lovebites.

“I missed this,” you said suddenly, Luke snapping his head forward to focus on the water that lapped steadily against the shore.

He swallowed hard, trying to shake the heat that consumed him — not just from the sun, but from the way his mind was racing. “Missed what?”

“This,” you replied with a soft smile, lifting a hand to gesture around. “The lake, the sun, the quiet… just being here. It feels like nothing else matters for a while, you know?”

Luke let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. He dared to glance over at you again, this time his eyes landing on your head — your eyes were still covered by your arm, but he had the perfect view of your plump lips, as well as the way the sunlight caught in your hair, making it shine like it was woven with gold.

Luke shifted uncomfortably, forcing his eyes to the water once again, trying to ignore the fire burning inside him. He wanted to say something — anything — to break the silence, but his mind was a mess, tangled with everything he’d been holding back for so long.

“I get that,” he finally managed, his voice quiet. “Feels like… everything else just disappears out here.”

You nodded, still lying back with your arm draped over your eyes. “Yeah, exactly. No distractions. Just us.”

The simplicity of your words hit him harder than he expected. “Just us.” Luke bit the inside of his cheek, knowing full well how dangerous those two words felt right now. He was suddenly acutely aware of how close you were — the soft rise and fall of your chest, the small space between your bodies.

You sat up, stretching your arms over your head, the movement catching Luke’s attention again. You glanced at him, your eyes hidden behind sunglasses but the tension was palpable. “You okay?”

Luke nodded a little too quickly. “Yeah. Yeah, I’m good.”

“You sure?” You tilted your head, watching him curiously.

Luke’s eyes involuntarily traced your face, landing on your lips a moment longer. Your breath hitched, the air between you charged with something unspoken but very real. “Yeah… really good.”

And just like that, the distance between you vanished.

It happened fast, almost like you both decided at the same moment. One second you were staring at him, heart racing, and the next his lips were on yours, the kiss electric and urgent. You didn’t know who moved first, and you didn’t care.

All the years of restraint, of not crossing the line, melted away as your lips moved together. Your hands found Luke’s curls, tugging on them slightly which elicited a groan from him. You moved onto his lap, no longer oblivious to the physical toll you had taken on Luke. His hands hesitated at first, but then they slid down your sides, his touch searing. He traced down your ribcage, onto your waist, then finally settled on your ass.

The kiss deepened, both of you getting lost in the moment as the years of pent-up tension finally released in waves. You tugged on his roots, causing him to squeeze your ass tightly, a low grumbling coming from his throat. Your fingers untangled from his brown locks, tracing down Luke’s shoulders and onto his torso, feeling the curves of his abs under your fingertips. Luke shivered beneath you despite the burning sun that shone down.

You finally pulled back, the both of you gasping for air, your chests rising and falling rapidly. Your gaze dropped to his slightly swollen lips, then to his bare chest glistening in the sunlight. The intensity of the moment suddenly caught up to you — his hands still gripping your ass, his body warm and hard beneath yours. You realized the position you were in, straddling him, looking dishevelled as one of your bikini straps had slipped down your shoulder, exposing a deep tan line.

Luke’s eyes followed the movement, his pupils blown wide as he swallowed hard. The weight of everything you two had held back over the years came crashing down on him. His grip on your waist loosened, his hands hovering as he was unsure of what to do next. You felt the tension in the air shift, both of you realizing you’d crossed a line that you couldn’t un-cross, no matter how badly the two of you have wanted to all along.

“Oh, God,” you whispered, your eyes wide as you pulled back slightly. “What did we just do?”

Luke ran a hand through his hair, looking as freaked out as you felt. His cheeks were flushed, though you couldn’t tell if it was from the kiss or the heat. “I don’t know. I—” He looked down, then back at you. “Does this change everything?”

“I don’t know,” you admitted, your mind racing with all the implications of what just happened. “I…we should head back.”

You swung your leg back over Luke, standing up and quickly walking back towards the boat. You grabbed your hoodie and threw it on despite the heat, feeling like you needed to cover yourself, needing something to hide behind. Luke sat there for a moment longer, his heart pounding in his chest as he watched you retreat. He ran his hands over his face, trying to make sense of what happened, but the feeling of your body pressed against his lingered too heavily. His mind was a mess of excitement and confusion, with lingering sentiments of regret as he couldn’t help but feel that everything was screwed now. Luke stood up quickly, jogging to catch up to you, but the air between you was thick and awkward now.

The boat ride back to the lake house was silent, and the roar of the motor made it easy for neither of them to face the reality of the situation. You sat in the front hold, knees tucked to your chest, staring out at the water as it splashed against the sides of the boat, stray droplets hitting your skin. Luke sat in the driver's seat, gripping the wheel a little too tightly, sneaking glances at you every few seconds.

As the lake house came into view, you stood up quickly, ready to jump out as soon as you were close enough to the dock. Your heart was still racing, no longer from excitement, but from the overwhelming sense of reality that had come crashing down. All the unspoken tension, all the nights you spent wondering if this would ever happen, it had—too fast, too soon. You didn’t know how to face it, how to face Luke.

The second the boat docked, you jumped out onto the wooden pier, barely pausing to steady yourself. You grabbed the rope, helping Luke quickly tie up the boat, before starting up the dock towards the house.

Luke hopped out, following you closely. “Wait, can we talk for a sec?” he called after you, his voice shaky, filled with desperation.

But you were already halfway to the house, your footsteps quickening. “I…I need a minute, Luke,” you replied without turning around, feeling your chest tighten with the weight of everything.

Luke stood there for a moment, watching you disappear inside. His shoulders slumped in defeat as he ran a hand through his hair again, frustrated with himself. He knew that something had changed between you before this but now this was something that was going to be impossible to ignore.

Inside the house, you hurried up the stairs to your room, closing the door softly behind you before sinking onto the edge of the bed. Your heart was still pounding, not from the brisk walk you’d just done to escape Luke, but instead as you replayed the kiss in your head — how natural it had felt, how long you had waited for it, and yet how terrifying it was now that it had happened. You buried your face in your hands, trying to slow the whirlwind of emotions swirling inside you.

As the sun set over the lake, the tension between you and Luke didn’t go unnoticed by the others at dinner. You didn’t sit in your normal spots next to each other, instead sitting at opposite ends of the table, avoiding eye contact, and only speaking when necessary. You kept in conversation with Mark, bringing up just about anything you could think of to avoid interacting with Luke. The energy felt heavy, and no one could ignore how different things seemed between you two.

After dinner, it didn’t take long for the others in the house to confront you and Luke about what had happened that afternoon. Luke found himself outside on the back porch with Quinn and Jack, while you were cornered inside playing pool with Mark and Ethan.

Quinn and Jack watched as their little brother swirled his glass over and over, the sound of the liquid sloshing and the crickets chirping being the only sounds around them. Quinn leaned back in his chair, studying his brother carefully. His bottom lip was bright red from how hard Luke had been chewing on it, his eyes unfocused on the glass in his hand. Luke, uncharacteristically, hadn’t said anything in about 10 minutes. Normally he’d find a way to get his two cents in during every conversation, but his silence was overwhelming

“Alright, what’s going on? You and y/n have been acting weird all evening.” Quinn finally asked, honestly a bit weirded out by his brother’s behaviour.

Jack chimed in, less tactful than Quinn. “Yeah, man, did something happen on the boat? You’ve both been all… tense since you came back.”

Luke snapped his eyes off his cup, and onto his brothers whose eyes were burrowing into him. He hesitated, running a hand through his messy curls, his heart still racing from earlier. He couldn’t seem to get it to slow down. “I, uh… I made a move.” Luke admitted quietly. “I kissed her, I mean… We, uh, kissed.”

Quinn raised an eyebrow, glancing at Jack, who smiled and nodded in approval at his brother. “Finally,” he grinned. “So… was it everything you’ve ever hoped for? Did it live up to your fantasies that you’ve been dreaming of since you were fifteen?”

Luke knew Jack was poking fun at him, but as he replayed the kiss in his head, he realized it was. “It was… intense,” Luke said, choosing his words carefully. “We were chatting and then I just kissed her. Her lips… it felt like there was nothing around us when I kissed her. But…”

Luke trailed off, sinking back into his chair as the events that immediately followed replayed in his head.

“But what?” Jack probed.

Luke sighed, feeling the weight of his doubts. “After we pulled apart, I freaked out. All I could think was that I’d just ruined everything between us. I like her a lot… but I didn’t think she felt the same. And… and now I’m worried our friendship is done.”

Quinn let out a little sigh, a small smile tugging on his lips at his little brother. “Look, if it came to that point, that the two of you got close enough to make out, then it means she probably feels the same way,” Quinn said, leaning forward in his chair. “You’re not going to ruin what you two have. I promise that your friendship is strong enough to survive this.”

Jack, more relaxed, shrugged. "Yeah, you clearly like each other. Just talk to her."

Inside, the sound of pool balls clacking loudly filled the air, and no conversation was exchanged between the three of them. Mark and Ethan exchanged silent looks that were traced with unspoken words, urging the other to break the ice and ask you about what had transpired on the boat. Finally, Ethan gave in to Mark’s coaxing stares.

“So uh,” Ethan started, drawing your eyes onto him. “You gonna tell us what the fuck happened on the boat?”

Your fingers stilled on the pool cue, hesitating as you glanced between him and Mark, who was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. Your heart thudded uncomfortably in your chest. Mark and Ethan’s eyes bore into you, expecting answers you didn’t even have for yourself. The tension from earlier had followed you inside, wrapping around your chest like a vice.

You straightened up, brushing a hand through your hair as you tried to collect your thoughts. “I… I kissed him,” you admitted, feeling a wave of embarrassment wash over you. “Or maybe he kissed me. I don’t know… it just happened.” You let out a sigh, biting your bottom lip.

Mark raised an eyebrow, nodding slowly. “Okay, you kissed, big fucking whoop,” he said, taking a step forward. “Explain to me, then, why are you both acting like someone just died?”

Ethan snorted, leaning his cue against the table. "Yeah, seriously. It’s not like anyone’s surprised. You’ve had this thing between you for… what? Years?"

But to you, it felt like something had. Not a person, but something sacred between you and Luke—something that had been built carefully over years of knowing one another. You had always skirted the edges of something more, but you’d never let yourselves tip over. Until today. And now everything felt fragile like the ground beneath your feet was unstable.

“It’s not that simple. Luke and I… I mean we’ve always been friends. We never crossed that line, even when it felt like we were close. And now… I don’t know. I feel like I messed it all up.”

Ethan scoffed. “Messed it up? You didn’t mess anything up. You guys finally did something that everyone’s been telling you to do for ages. Hell, it’s about time.”

Mark chimed in, his tone a bit more understanding. “Listen, I know it’s scary now that you think your friendship’s changed, but from what I’ve seen, I don’t think anything’s ruined. I think this is something you’ve both wanted for a while. You’ve always liked each other, even if you both pretended not to.”

You looked down, fingers tapping nervously against the side of the pool table. “What if he doesn’t feel the same way?” you whispered, voicing the fear that had been gnawing at you since the moment you left the boat. “I mean, I… I basically jumped on him. What if I made things awkward for him?”

Mark rolled his eyes, walking over to stand beside you. “Trust me, if Luke had a problem with it, he would’ve said something by now. You didn’t force anything. From what it sounds like, he was just as into it as you were.”

Ethan nodded in agreement. “Exactly. Don’t overthink it. He’s probably freaking out just as much as you are. Just talk to him.”

You sighed, knowing deep down that they were right, but the anxiety still clawed at your insides. “I don’t want to ruin our friendship,” you admitted quietly. “We’ve been close for so long… if this messes things up, I don’t know how I’ll deal with it.”

Ethan couldn’t help but roll his eyes. No matter how many times they reassured you that your friendship wouldn’t be ruined, it was clear that your anxieties were getting the best of you. “You won’t ruin anything. I’ve seen how Luke looks at you. That guy is all in, even if he doesn’t realize it yet.”

You pulled your bottom lip between your teeth, nibbling on it anxiously. As their words sunk in, you couldn’t help but glance toward the back door, where you knew Luke was with his brothers. The thought of confronting him, of actually talking about what had happened, still terrified you. But deep down, you knew it was the only way to move forward.

Mark and Ethan’s advice echoed in your mind: Talk to him. It was scary, but you couldn’t deny the spark that had ignited between you and Luke. Maybe, just maybe, there was something more waiting for you both on the other side of this conversation.

After the conversation wound down, you couldn't help but feel the lingering tension between you and Luke. Even though Mark and Ethan’s reassurances helped ease some of your worries, the knot of uncertainty in your chest remained. It gnawed at you, the same question echoing over and over in your mind: What if this changes everything?

As the house settled into its quiet evening rhythm and the sounds of conversations faded into the background, your thoughts were still consumed by that kiss — how everything had felt so right in the moment, yet so terrifying in its aftermath. You and Luke had always danced around the possibility of something more, but now that it had finally happened, the reality of it weighed heavy on you.

Later that night, sleep refused to come, your mind running wild with the events of the day. You lay there in the quiet of your room, replaying the kiss over and over again. Every brush of Luke’s lips against yours, every touch of his hands, the way his breath had quickened as he held you close. The intensity of it all made your heart race, but so did the fear that followed.

You glanced at the clock: it was well past midnight, but sleep was the last thing on your mind. Instead, your thoughts turned to the advice Mark and Ethan had given you. Talk to him, they said. But what if talking only made things worse? What if everything fell apart? Yet, despite the fear gnawing at you, one truth remained clear: you couldn’t ignore this. You couldn’t pretend the kiss hadn’t happened or that it hadn’t meant anything. You needed to talk to Luke.

Taking a deep breath, you pushed back the covers and swung your legs over the edge of the bed, your heart pounding as you quietly made your way to the door. The moment you turned the handle and pulled it open, you froze.

Luke stood there, his hand raised as if he was about to knock, his blue eyes wide in surprise. “Oh!” you gasped.

“I was just coming to talk to you,” he said, his voice soft and uncertain. “Can I come in?”

You nodded, stepping aside to let him in. The air between you felt heavy with anticipation, and as Luke entered, the awkward tension that had been present all evening seemed to follow. You both sat on the edge of the bed, keeping a small but noticeable distance between each other. The silence was deafening as you each tried to find the right words to start.

“So…” you started, breaking the tension. “About earlier.”

“Yeah,” Luke muttered, glancing at you before looking down again. “That was… intense.”

You let out a small laugh, though it was more out of nerves than humour. “Yeah. It was.”

Luke rubbed the back of his neck, looking like he was struggling to find the right words. “I’m sorry I freaked out. I didn’t mean for it to… you know, get weird.”

You shook your head quickly. “No, it wasn’t just you. I was freaking out too. I mean, we’ve been friends for so long, and I didn’t know if this would… ruin that.”

Luke’s eyes finally met yours, and there was something vulnerable in his gaze. “I thought the same thing. But… I think we’re making this more complicated than it needs to be.”

You fought a smile that was grappling to show, needing to hear Luke say it. “What do you mean?”

Luke swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing in his throat. “I want us to be more than friends. I’ve wanted it for a long time, but I didn’t think you felt the same. But after today…” He trailed off, his words hanging in the air.

“I do,” you whispered. “I’ve felt the same way for a while. I just didn’t know how to say it.”

Relief washed over Luke’s face, and a small smile tugged at his lips. A matching smile formed on your lips as you thought for a moment. “How do we move forward? Like… as more than friends,” you asked.

“I think we just stay the same,” Luke shrugged. “Except now I can call you my girlfriend, and I can kiss you, and we can have sex.”

You laughed, feeling some of the tension melt away. “Is that all?”

“Yeah,” Luke replied with a grin, leaning closer. “Is that okay with you?”

Your breath hitched as the space between you shrank. “Yeah. It’s more than okay.”

Without another word, Luke leaned in, and this time, when your lips met, there was no hesitation. All the years of restraint, of not crossing the line, melted away as your hands found his curls, tugging them gently. A low groan escaped him as you moved into his lap, feeling the heat between you intensify. His hands slid down your body, resting on your waist before moving lower, gripping you as he pulled you closer. You could feel every inch of him beneath you, the warmth of his skin against yours. The world outside faded away, and all that mattered was the two of you, finally letting go of everything you’d been holding back.

The weight of the uncertainty that had been sitting between you all evening lifted, replaced by a dizzying sense of relief and excitement. Luke's hands gripped your hips firmly, grounding you in the moment. You could feel his heartbeat against your chest, fast and erratic, matching the wild rhythm of your own. The connection between you had always been there, simmering beneath the surface, but now it was tangible, electric, and you couldn’t get enough of it.

Luke’s lips moved against yours with a sense of urgency, wanting to taste every bit of you. His hands slid up your sides, fingers brushing your skin under your shirt, leaving goosebumps in their wake. You let out a soft sigh against his lips.

Pulling back slightly, you caught your breath as you both took a moment to come back to reality. Luke’s hands stayed on your waist, his thumbs gently brushing your skin, as if he didn’t want to let go.

“I can’t believe we waited this long,” Luke whispered, his breath warm against your lips.

You laughed softly, reaching up to his curls and gently running a hand through them. “I know, it feels kind of crazy, right?”

He chuckled, a low sound that sent a pleasant shiver down your spine. “We’re idiots. Could’ve saved ourselves a lot of trouble.”

You smiled, scanning his eyes. There was something different in them now—no more hesitation, no more uncertainty. Just Luke, as you had always known him, but also something more. “Better late than never, though,” you teased softly.

Luke's hands moved up to cup your face, his thumbs brushing gently across your cheeks. “You know, I meant what I said earlier,” he whispered. “I’ve wanted this for a long time. I just didn’t think you’d ever want me like that.”

You blinked, feeling your heart squeeze at his vulnerability. “Luke, I’ve always wanted you,” you admitted quietly, your voice shaking just slightly. “I just… I was scared.”

His gaze softened, and he leaned forward to press a soft kiss to your forehead. “I get it. I was scared too. But I’m not scared anymore.”

You smiled, feeling a rush of warmth flood your chest at his words. “Me either,” you whispered, brushing your fingers through his curls. “I’m not scared anymore.”

The moment cooled down, and you both slipped into a comfortable silence, basking in the newfound closeness. You moved up the bed and under the covers, wrapping yourselves in each other’s arms. The steady rise and fall of Luke’s chest and the soft sound of crickets outside lulled you into a sense of peace. With his hand gently tracing up and down your side, you nodded off, feeling the weight of all the years and uncertainty melt away, leaving only the warmth of the present.
