i picked up Brave New World by Aldous Huxley today for my literature class, and i was curious to hear some of yalls thoughts about the strange and honestly sort of twisted way the Lost Generation authors and artists handled the horrors of WW1, followed by the prosperity of the 20s, only to then be plunged back into turmoil and darkness for much of the 30s and 40s, and over and over this cycle repeats (especially in american history, unfortunately i cant speak much on other countries). if youve read Brave New World feel free to add any extra insight, but if not then you're still welcome to add to the discussion <:

disclaimer: this book was published in 1931, so no, it probably doesn't have a tumblr seal of approval. proceed with this understanding and we'll have ourselves a gay old time. we (as a human collective) can read old literature and criticize it and know we know better now, but we dont have to burn it or throw it away, it's still important to learn and read.

That is right, the flag of the AI messed up. In such sensitive topics, I should be super accurate and precise. My intention of solidarity can't be enough if my messages come across as hurtful or painful. I take responsibility for being unable to express my hope for peace and prosperity both for Jews and for Arabs. I love people of every kind. And I'm so sad that I can't protect the most innocent of all - the children. The mistake was the comparisons, and the focus on justice at any cost - but in fact, it is not a zero-sum game. It is a total sum, a total sum of the same land where so much human blood has been shed during a prolonged period. I don't want to blame, I just want to acknowledge the universal human pain. The grief, the insanity, the horror. I have seen and heard too much pain, various disastrous assaults… And all I feel is powerless, sad, and hopeful that we will choose another path. With the help and support of the world, that will help us find compassion in ourselves and each other. I pray for the day our world will know no more wars, assaults, and apathy to pain. Because trauma is never erased; if not healed, it always passes forward. I am extremely thankful for the insights of the peace activist Thích Nhất Hạnh (RIP) and his followers who have opened my eyes and opened my heart to seeking connection, love, and compassion. I have a long way to go to be a better person, but I firmly believe in the human right of Arabs and Jews to have a place where each can live a secure and respectful life in harmony and connection ♥️🙏

Okay so gender is socially constructed and some of us decided that it wasn’t enough so we constructed queerness to defy, nuance and tailor the social construction of gender. We have been very intentionally working and reworking this queerness we constructed since we laid the foundation. I think that intentionality of the process of building the concept of queerness is odd. We regularly, through less than ideal means unfortunately because we have a bad habit of yelling at each other about it, redefine transness amongst ourselves. Ask the first people who identified as transsexual what that identity meant to them and you will get a wildly different answer than you would get from your average modern day trans kid. We are weirdly self aware about this process. I mean. Not totally. Obviously. But in comparison to straight people who are typically mind blown when the 13 year old nonbinary child of someone they graduated with explains to them that gender is a social construct we are hyper conscious of how we’re talking about our genders and attractions. Spend some time scrolling through old asexual forums. Watch the four hour video essay YouTuber X made about respectability politics and transmedicalism. Straight people generally put less thought into being straight over the course of their entire lives than a gay teen spent thinking about gayness in the month following the realization that they’re not straight. This level of intentional consideration going into the development of this social construct is weird, right?

I will be thinking more about why we do this (probably as a way to defend our existence and because queerness in its current form has only really gained traction in this recent age of science and philosophy where we think about everything more but that’s its own thought soup to cook) and what effect this intentionality has on our community and society at large. Are there benefits to this method of social construction? Harms? Are other concepts being socially constructed in a similar way right now? In the past?

Anyone have thoughts on this? Sources? Has someone else already done this thinking for me that you’re familiar with? Strategies for sleeping when your brain won’t shut up about your gay ponderings?
