Spy X Family Manga - Tumblr Posts
Found a good deal on volumes 1-10 for less than $50!
I've been wanting to read the manga in Japanese and now I finally can!
I'm not fluent in Japanese, but it was my major in college (got my B.A. in East Asian Language & Literature). After I passed the intermediate JLPT back in 2012, I unfortunately didn't have time/motivation to keep up my studies after that, especially when I got into a career that had nothing to do with Japanese. But becoming a SxF fan has rekindled my interest! Thankfully I haven't forgotten too much of what I learned. I started doing Japanese lessons on Duolingo (wish that existed when I was in college!) and dusted off my old study books (for those interested in learning Japanese, I highly recommend the books by Taeko Kamiya. Too many Japanese courses only focus on memorization without first providing a foundation of the language rules, but her books do it correctly and describe the grammar and linguistics in a very organized and detailed way).
But yeah, even with all the gaps in my studies, I still have a good grasp of Japanese grammar rules and know a decent amount of words, I just have to keep building my vocabulary and kanji knowledge!
More in depth analysis about the Spy x Family Manga Cover Chairs and Bonus Artworks (Or me just overthinking Endo’s decisions in everything and as always long post, please bear with me)
So I wanted to talk about something that I noticed about the various designer chairs that is featured on all manga covers.
Endo did say that he thought about how each chair matches the personality of the character, regarding it’s style, design or the color.
But I like to talk about something different about the chairs-it’s size or the seating capacity and how it reflects the characters relationship with others or their views about relationships. Also, I’m going to share something significant about the comedic bonus arts that also feature the chairs.
This focus mainly about Loid, Yor and Anya‘s Chair (including Fiona’s Chair) and the bonus illustrations that came with it.
Volume 1-Loid’s Chair: Le Corbusier LC2
There are two versions of this chair in the manga/anime, the love seat and the one seater. Loid is seated in the one seater chair in this cover, it means no one can sit there with him that reflects how reluctant he was in letting other people in his life. He wasn’t open for relationships (You can notice that those who are like him, intelligence assets; Franky, Fiona, Handler all sit in one seating capacity chair).
The bonus artwork was Anya sitting on the chair copying his pose. She’s the most fitting person to be in this seat because she can see through Loid’s mind, she basically knows who he really is and she likes him for that. Anya was fond of spies and she was excited about being part of his mission.
Volume 2-Anya’s Chair: Marshmallow Sofa
Anya’s chair has a large seating capacity and she was sitting at the middle, waiting for the empty spots on her both sides to be occupied. This depicts Anya’s anticipation for forming relationship with other people, about her wanting parents, a family, to be there for her.
The bonus artwork was drunk Yor lying face flat on Anya’s chair. This artwork, for me, reflects Yor’s unwavering affection for Anya and Anya’s appreciation of Yor. Even drunk, she’s determined to protect her, as if she was her real daughter as seen during the castle chapter. She is fond of Anya.
Volume 3-Yor’s Chair: La Chaise (Featuring Fiona’s Heart Cone Chair)
This is the chair I wanted to talk about and I have to use Fiona’s Chair for this analysis for Endo said that Fiona is designed to be Yor’s contrast and we can clearly see it in their chairs.
The seating capacity of Yor and Fiona’s chair greatly differ. Yor’s chair was big, Endo pointed how it didn’t even fit the cover, and even though Fiona’s chair is big too, she’s the only person who could sit in it. Other people can fit Yor’s chair but not with Fiona. I analyze this as Yor being open to genuine relationships and selfless while Fiona being closed off and selfish.
We know Yor’s motivation for being an assassin was for Yuri, for the sake of other people, and what is Fiona’s motivation? Clearly it was mainly for Twilight to marry her, love her and it was evidently show with all that stuff hiding behind her chair. I’m sure she experienced a lot of traumatic stuff that led to her being a spy but I don’t see other praise worthy and selfless motivations from her that was aside Twilight’s affection. Don’t get me wrong, she’s an interesting character and she isn't a bad person but I’m not really a fan of her personality just like I don’t like Yuri’s obsession with her sister.
In Yor however, she has nothing under or behind her chair. Just that blood that wasn’t even behind or below her chair. She wasn’t faking anything about her personality. It’s true that she accepted her marriage to preserve her assassin job but she genuinely wanted to marry Loid because he was the one who acknowledged her selflessness and that was enough for her to completely entrust her life to him. She welcomed Loid and Anya to her life because her longing for a companion to share her life with is as big as the size of her chair.
The bonus art in Volume 3 was Loid sitting on her chair. Despite the comedic set up of these illustrations, I think the people who tend to sit on the chair on the bonus arts were the ones who gets the person on the cover the most.
That is why Anya is in Loid’s (Because she can read his mind) Why Yor is in Anya's (Because Yor lost her parents at a young age too and she knows how to care for Anya because she did that to Yuri) and why Loid is in Yor’s chair (Because Loid understood her self sacrifice because he too, is the same as her) Also why Anya and Bond are in the bonus of Volume 4 because the two of them get each other, being both experimented on.
I also have some analysis about Volume 5-12 and the bonus artworks as well, but I might post them in another time since I haven't seen the translated bonus artworks in Becky and Emile and Ewen's Volumes.
But let me know if this analysis makes sense to you.
Twilight's Habit of Observing Yor and Anya
I just noticed how often Twilight observes these two interacting with each other, the anime is inclined of highlighting this since most of these are not in the manga and I love them for that.
Look at how fond his face is when he's looking at Yor and Anya's genuine affection for each other. I think he can saw glimpses of him and his mom through them.
Yor and Anya share a true mother-daughter bond, even though they don't share the same blood. In his world as a spy, where deception and pretenses rule, Yor and Anya's genuine bond is a breath of fresh air for him. It was something that is very much real and it's something that is under his care regardless he is Twilight, Loid Forger or his true self. He was the one who united the their family and I think it makes him wonder how an epitome of deception like himself can build something as authentic and genuine as this.
That face he makes, the longing warm stare directed at them. I can't explain it but his eyes are really different when he's looking at them. It's soft. Yep, this man is already into deep.
Also, it makes me wonder, judging at how often he observes these two, how could he not tell something was definitely weird about them? At this rate he must've been constantly and intentionally ignoring those😂
More Yor and Anya interacting with each other in Loid's view:
They were always so bright in his view. I think he associates the both of them are his source of light. That's just so sweet and wholesome😭❤️
• Polaroids •
When Loid buys a Polaroid camera under the pretense to use for documenting Operation Strix’s progress, he winds up using it to capture all the little moments of his family life.
He captures moments like Anya losing her first tooth, their hiking trip to the mountains, and many moments of Yor, Anya, and Bond playing in the park. Many of the doctored photos used in the beginning of the mission are replaced by new, genuine photos of the family, though all are absent of him, as he’s behind the camera.
Yor tries talking him into having his picture taken.
“Oh, Loid, you always take such lovely photos of our family, but you never get the opportunity to be in one yourself!” Yor says.
“Really, Yor, it’s okay! I don’t mind!”
She frowns.
“Well… could we at least take one picture together? I’d like to have a new couples photo to put on my desk at work… you know, for a-appearances.”
Loid ultimately relents, and the two sit together on the couch. They both smile as Loid holds up the camera and snaps the picture.
Loid pulls the photo and lets it develop. The photo that appears is a cute snapshot of them close together.
“I love it, Loid!” Yor smiles.
“It is a lovely photo of us!” He concurs.
“Here, let’s do one more!”
This time, she wraps her arms around Loid’s shoulders and her head next to his as he holds the camera up to take another.
Just when he snaps the photo, Yor plants a big kiss on his cheek. Loid, now blushing hard, stares wide-eyed. When the photo pops out of the slot, Yor takes it and jumps up.
“Thank you, pumpkin!” She says walking to her room.
Loid rubs his cheek.
“Kiss-“ He mutters out.
A few days later, Yor walks to her work desk and sets down a little frame with the photo of her kissing Loid inside. On the Polaroid frame are the words written in red “My love” with a little heart drawn next to it.
Can you imagine post reveal Twilight fussing over Yor to wear a disguise every single time she goes to do her job because he's worried about her? Imagine him being up for days making the perfect outfit for Yor, only for Yor to say "I leave no witnesses"
Why did I have the exact same thought yesterday wtf is tumblr reading my mind
SxF Crack Theory: The Identity Of [REDACTED]'s Father
Hear me out here.... but, maybe, Twilight's father could be Yuri's boss, aka, the SSS Lieutenant.
Now, this might be a crack/joke theory, but here is the evidence I have to back up my claim (yes, I'm presenting it because I'm just Like That):
(Warning: Manga spoilers ahead)
Exhibit A: Physical Characteristics
Here is a picture of Agent Twilight:
Here is a picture of Yuri's boss (who, from now in, will be referred to as YB, for my own convenience):
We can see that Twilight and YB have very similar facial characteristics: bluish-grey eyes, blond hair, and a similar face shape (nose, jaw).
We never see Twilight's father's full face: only the lower half, because he has presumably forgotten his face, along with his mother's (King of Emotional Repression™️), but we can see that his jawline and shape of his mouth are very similar to Adult Twilight.
Oh, and look at that- rather pronounced cheekbones, if I do say so myself. Where else did I see those? Hmmm
Exhibit B: Ambiguous Fate
During the War Arc, we're never told about [REDACTED]'s father's fate. We just know he never returns to his family: and the reason why he left for the very last time, was that, "Things have been heating up at the border. I need to take a little business trip." The fact that his, a (presumably) rather important man's, body was never recovered: nor were [REDACTED] or his mother informed of his death. Of course, his body could have been lost in the bombings, or the part of [REDACTED] finding out about his father's dead could have been omitted, but for most of the part, we're left to assume about his father's dead. And... this sounds familiar to another instance...
Like the instance of [REDACTED]'s friends. He (and we) assumed they'd died in the warehouse as children, but later we see that they're alive and in the army (only to die a second time, RIP), but this time, for their deaths to be confirmed: for [REDACTED] to only receive their dog tags after the failed campaign.
This may have been a setup: for Endo to reintroduce [REDACTED]'s father, later in the story, as YB.
Anyway, one thing I've learned after reading and watching so many books, comics, and TV shows: never assume a person's dead, not unless their body/proof of their death has been explicitly shown. This belief was only reinforced after [REDACTED]'s friends.
And, [REDACTED]'s father's last known place was around the Westalian-Ostanian border. He could have escaped in the crossfire, theoretically...
Exhibit C: Fatherly Nature (?)
We all love a good found-family dynamic in the workplace. It's there with WISE, it's there with Garden, and it's kinda there with the SSS.
My main argument about this stems from the chapter which focuses on Yuri's work.
We see YB continuously worry about Yuri's physical health, in panels like:
Obviously, this doesn't happen only in this chapter. Whenever Yuri's there, YB is also there, yelling at him to a) go to sleep, or b) STOP GETTING HIT BY BUSSES OH MY FUCKING GOD IT CAN'T HAPPEN SO MANY TIMES TO ONE PERSON-
And, of course, there's the Yuri Sick Fic chapter:
Not gonna lie, this point is extremely weak, if I brought this up in court I'd be laughed out of there-
Anyway, I just wanted to put this in.
If it does turn out that YB is [REDACTED]'s father then. Bestie. Buddy. How are you managing to be a better father-figure to some insolent kid who gets hit by busses than you were to your actual son, like 20 years ago. Maybe he learned along the way.
Exhibit D: Symbolism (???)
Oh, look, another point I'm pulling out of my ass! But whatever, you're reading it <3
During the War Arc, we see Twilight sustain two major injuries:
One, as a child, when his home is bombed:
And two, as an adult, in the army:
and these injuries are both to his left eye.
Of course, this has given rise to theories of him not being able to see his left eye, it being his blind spot, and Yor guarding his blind spot on missions, etc., etc., which I love bc ✨Twiyor✨
Getting back on point, if we look at YB, we see that he has injuries too... or rather, remnants of them, what with the scars he has...
which, are also on his left eye. Huh! Interesting... this might just be me, but could this be parallels to how similar he and his father were? Are? His father also wanted peace between Ostania and Westalis: but he taught his child that in a very harsh manner (by slapping him), but Twilight wants to teach Anya that in a kind manner. Whenever we see him teaching her, he never loses his cool with her (of course, he loses a lot of hope, but this man's a pessimist, what can we do).
Also shows how much kinder Twilight is, compared to his father.
---
Of course, these points are very weak, and it might just be that Endo reused some character designs for efficiency, but let me be, ok!! This is a crack theory!!! Let me be a clown!!!! AKDFJSJF
If I'm being honest, this post was inspired by a convo I'd had with my friend, around the time Chapter 86 was released. She was theorizing that [REDACTED]'s dad is the Shopkeeper, and I was theorizing it was this dude. Of course, our theorizing was sidetracked by Chapter 86, and a certain panel within it, but... WHATEVER.
So, what are your thoughts? Obviously, my own theory is very weak (for example, why would the SSS accept a Westalian citizen into their ranks? Why would he even join the SSS? Could he have defected? Abandoned his wife and kid?), but this was fun to think about, lol. What are your theories? I think the Shopkeeper-is-the-dad theory and the YB-is-his-dad theory are both cool, so, what do you think?
(Also, yeah, I know, his dad could very well be dead. I just refuse to believe it, bc I'm just Like That <3)
Twilight be like: "She's only legally my wife. You know that fake marriage trope? Well, we're actually married for real, but like the relationship isn't real, so I'd only protect my wife and daughter with my life...for the mission, of course." FoR tHe MiSsIoN
Do your best with WHAT Yor 😭😭😭 (even she doesn’t know!!)
Yor is sooooo cute but Loid’s expression is also adorable here~
Yaaaay I’ve been waiting for Loid to pull the “I’m A Doctor” card and do medical stuff, even if we didn’t see it in detail lol
“No one’s allowed to suspect my wife but ME, that ONE SINGULAR TIME, and NEVER AGAIN.” For The Mission™️
the three lads! :]
Spy x Family's Secret Story
A few days ago, I learned something interesting at school: some stories have secret stories.
Hopefully, I can explain it: a secret story is what is not told explicitly in the narrative, but that the reader can understand by the character's behavior, thoughts or actions.
The most interesting part is that this secret story is, in many cases, what pushes the main story forward.
So, of course, I had to apply this to my sxf brainrot 😏 It took me a while to figure it out, but I think I got it...
Remember this panel?
It's one of the most celebrated panels in the manga. We finally got to see Twilight shirtless 😎 and we've enjoyed countless fanarts of it (thanks to all the wonderful artists 👏) Well, it was precisely this panel and the timing of it what made me realize about Spy x family's secret story.
This is the first time we see Twilight naked, right? This was also the first time he realized he was vulnerable.
Here, Twilight, master of disguise, best spy of Westalis, rips his disguise, admits that he has weaknesses and shows us that he's injured because of this vulnerability.
Think about the symbolism of it; a person is at their most vulnerable when naked and we didn't see him in this state until he had that conversation with Yor. Even though the arc was about catching Wheeler, the secret story of that arc was about weakness. Wheeler himself mentioned it several times and it's not a coincidence that in this arc Twilight shows weakness not once, but three times:
1. By not killing Yuri (and getting shot)
2.By getting hurt during the confrontation with Wheeler and lastly...
3.When he sees Yor again!
It's also not a coincidence that he got physically hurt because he showed weakness. I suspect it won't be the last time this happens. Keep that in mind for the future...
All this is related to that secret story l mentioned at the beginning. I think SxF secret story is precisely that, not weakness, but vulnerability.
That conversation he had with Yor was about that; she was trying to convince him to be vulnerable with her (more on that here). And his thoughts were about that too; he's telling Yor in his mind he lives in a world where he cannot be vulnerable.
And that last line!!
It's exactly what secret stories are about: unsaid things.
The fact that an arc about weakness and vulnerability started and ended with Yor and where Twilight acknowledged his weakness is very significant. Do you see it too? All this happened because of her and I think he knows it too.
Twilight's struggle with vulnerability is what pushes the story forward and ultimately what makes so many of us connect with the characters. Clearly, he's losing the battle with himself and he's trusting and relying on his wife more every day; we see it in his behavior. We all want that to happen too!
Because, what is more human than to become vulnerable because of love?
New Spy x Family illustration
😎 Look how cool everyone looks...
First time we see Chloe in an official illustration 😃 She and Yuri look so young!
And we can even see Yuri's captain *coughs* (Twilight's dad) together in the same panel/illustration as Twilight for the first time 🤩
damian and anya icons ❤
I completely agree with you and it matches with how I characterize Yor (as well as how I hope Endo had meant to characterize her as well).
That was why even thought I loved her character I found her to be the weakest developed out of the 3 main characters. [I’m not trying to spoil] Initially reading the manga lead me to have higher hopes/expectations for Yor that just barely were revealed/developed since she a had few moments of focus and the rest of was more subtle/in the background. I was really happy when I got to the huge Yor focused arc and it developed her and a lot of other characters wonderfully as well as wonderfully answered a huge question I had about something that I had trouble coming with a satisfying answer for.
I loved that arc so much.
tbh I think Yor is really smart, she just never received a formal education so she *seems* ditzy and probably feels like she’s way out of her depth and that’s just — :(
Spy X family ep 4 icons!
Like or reblog if you save or use
Don't repost
He referred to Anya as " my daughter " while speaking to Sylvia !!!! I will never get over this 😭 only spyxfamily fans will get this
he’s finally become the ultimate proud father
OK HEAR ME OUT
People are noticing the new SPYxFAMILY 2nd cour OP is very Yor and Anya-centric
THIS IS BECAUSE THE OP IS LARGELY SHOT FROM LOID'S POV
Notice in most of the scenes he's in, he's walking behind or towards everyone else
And in the scenes he's missing from, the in frame characters are looking backwards to the camera
Or the perspective is shot from above or at eye level, because he's looking down on Anya or crouching to meet her:
ALSO, if you really want to cry, the song is called "Souvenir" so Loid is literally saving these color-filled memories as souvenirs for when his mission is done and he needs to leave 😢😢😢
But GOD I hope he stays, he loves them so much and they bring so much color to each others lives 😭😭😭😭😭
I Drew Anya! I couldn't decide which style, so I went with both! 😊
OMG ANYA IS SO CUTEEE (from chapter 96)
BONUS: This part had me screaming!!
