June of Doom Day 6: Broken Promise

Fandom: Star Wars The Bad Batch

Summary: Four times Hunter broke his promise to Crosshair about leaving Kamino.

"When our training is over, I'll find a way to get us the hell away from here." Hunter sat with Crosshair. They were 15 years old. Well at least their bodies where. Their brother Tech was in the medical bay. Some regs had decided he was 'too different' and thought that starting a fight would resolve his 'problems'. He was barely breathing when Crosshair found him.

"Where would we go?" Crosshair looked up at his brother. They say on the floor, Crosshair's back against the wall. His knees where pulled up into his chest.

"I'll figure it out. I promise." Hunter put his hand on Crosshair's knee. "I promise."

"Will Tech be okay? They really messed him up."

"He'll be okay. We'll help him get though it."

"When I find out who did this, it's over for them." Drying his eyes, Crosshair stood.

    "I know."

"When the war is over, we'll get out of here. We will never come back to Kamino."

"If we live to see the end of the war." Crosshair stood by his bunk. His tone was bitter as he spoke. He held his helmet under his right arm.

"We will." Hunter sat on his bunk. Wrecker had come into the barracks, years in his eyes, after some regs made fun of his scar. They had started to come up on his blind spot and scare him. While the batch did the same thing, they did it out of love.

"I need to get out of this place." Out of frustration, Crosshair threw his helmet to the ground.

"I know. I promise, when the war is over, we'll leave." Hunter sighed and leaned against the wall of his bunk.

    "You said that before."

"Cross, things changed. This is where we need to be."

    "After the war, you promise?"

Standing, Hunter walked over to Crosshair's helmet and picked it up. Gently he handed it to him, "I promise."

Now it was after the war. Hunter sat in the front of the Marauder. As they left Kamino, likely for the final time, Hunter looked at where Crosshair should be. However Crosshair was still on the planet. It was his choice to stay with the empire. It was his choice to stay on Kamino

Hunter understood why Crosshair hated kamino so much. It was always raining, cold, and if it wasn't raining, it was humid. The regs never acted like they were their brothers; their family. The Kaminons lacked the ability to see them as more then weapons. There was so much to hate about it; yet Hunter never did.

Crosshair was alone. Hunter had broken his promise to get him away from kamino. He hated it, but he had broken that promise over and over. Walking back to the bunks in the Marauder, the man sighed as he sat on his bunk. If he had a chance, he'd take his brother far away from the Empire.

Topica City was gone. The Empire had destroyed it. For once, it wasn't raining. Everyone was okay. Hunter stood on the landing platform that the batch had landed the Marauder on. He stared at Crosshair, trying to figure out what to say. Maybe he should remind him of their promise or how he could keep it this time.

Instead, Crosshair stayed on the platform. The batch left him there, on kamino. It was the empire that made Crosshair stay. His inhibitor had long been removed so he must believe in the cruel and corrupt system the Empire had built off the destruction of the Jedi and the Republic.

Some promises are meant to be broken. There was only so much that was in Hunter's control and staying on wasn't in it. It may have been his home but it was Crosshair's house.

Sitting in his bed, Hunter thought back to 15 years old Crosshair and teared up. He really did try to keep the promise of leaving kamino.

The Merry Whump of May Day 2: "Don't You Dare."

Fandom: Star Wars The Clone Wars

Warning: Character Death

Summary: Obi-wan never thought a memory of the past would be ruined during the war. Anakin was never a fan of listening to other people.

"Anakin, give that back." Obi-wan sighed

Anakin held his master's lightsaber, taunting him. "What are you gonna do?" He was ready to run away.

"Don't you dare" Obi-wan told his Padawan.

At the tail end of 'dare', Anakin took off down the hall. "Anakin!" Obi-wan yelled after him. Chasing him down the hall, the Jedi knew it would be a while before he got the boy to train. Like most ten year olds, he was difficult.

However, Anakin was his padawan. Training him was a pain but something told him it would be worth it in the end. Watching the kid run away with his lightsaber, Obi-wan couldn't help but smile. As frustrating as it was, it had some humor to it.

It had been years since Anakin had stolen his lightsaber and made Obi-wan  chase him around the temple to get it back. As the years passed, the little boy that Qui-gon had picked up on Tatooine, grew into an adult.

Now the two brothers were generals in a war. They would fight side by side from time to time. Today was no different. "Hello Anakin."

"Hey Obi-wan. Good to see you."

"Likewise. Shall we go over the plan?"

    "Probably."

Sitting together, the two looked over the battle plans and created them. They carefully thought out each attack and strategy, trying to find one that would take them to victory with the least amount of casualties.

The battle had started as they normally did. Hours of combat seemed to never end. Now they were pinned.

    "What now?"

"I have a plan but you're not gonna like it."

"What's your plan?" Obi-wan asked Anakin.

Explosions went off all around them. Obi-wan's ears were starting to ring, a sound he never did quite get used to.  "I'm going to take out the command tank."

"You'll die before you get there." Dismissing the thought, Obi-wan started to come up with another idea.

"Do you have such little faith in little old me?" Anakin joked.

Rolling his eyes, Obi-wan ignored the comment.

"I'm going to do it. It's our best shot."

"Don't you dare." Obi-wan told his padawan.

Anakin didn't listen. Running towards the command tank, Anakin deflected bullets. He got to the tank and slashed it with his lightsaber. The droids attacked the tank, using it as a weapon to kill Skywalker. Pieces of the tank scattered across the field. Anakin's body lie burned and still not far from the biggest part of the tank.

"Anakin!" Obi-wan screamed, Cody kept him from going to him.

The clone's arms wrapped around his body. "The medics will help him."

The world felt colder than he remembered. Trying to shake the feeling of loss was harder with Anakin then Qui-gon. Then again, Obi-wan had time to grieve with his father.

The battle couldn't stop for one man. If it could, there would never be any fighting. Kix pulled Anakin away from the scene and tried to find his vittles.

Cody got Obi-wan away from the scene. The fight continued and ended with a Republic victory.

Staying with Obi-wan, Cody never left his side. He already knew that General Skywalker had died. He had seen it in Rex and Kix's body language. Somehow, he knew Obi-wan knew.   However, for everyone's sake, it was best to keep that quiet.

No words were exchanged when Kix hand Obi-wan Anakin's lightsaber. Maybe if Anakin had just listened.  Anakin never liked to listen.

Augusnippets Day 4: Amputation

Fandom: The Bad Batch

Summary: Hunter knew standing close to Separatist tanks was dangerous. He didn't expect the one he was next to to blow up and he definitely didn't expect the damage to take his arm.

Hunter knew he shouldn't have been so close to the Separatist tank. While he wasn't sure what had happened after he heard the tank explode, he knew passed out.

One of his few memories involved a medic taking. "Put a tunicate on his arm, he's going to lose the limb anyway. If it gets much worse, we're going to have to do a field amputation."

The clone remembered thinking, "did he just say 'field amputation'?" Trying to argue, Hunter tried to sit up. He found he couldn't move. Then the world went black.

When he woke up, he was in a medical bay. Wrecker sat beside him on a chair. Tech was in the chair in the corner and Crosshair was sitting at the foot of the bed. They were talking about some memories from their cadet years.

As Hunter stirred, he startled Crosshair. "Hunter."

"Yeah" he said quietly.

"Hey! We thought we were going to lose ya!" Wrecked yelled. He stood up and went to hug his brother.

Reacting to the situation, Tech also stood up. "Hugging Hunter is not in his best interest. He is still healing."

"Aww okay." Wrecker pouted. Then he sat back in his seat.

"What happened?" Hunter asked.

"You were injured by shrapnel." Tech began. "The medics brought you to the service location they could find. While there, they made the decision to amputate your left arm at your shoulder."

That couldn't be right. "What?"

"Your left arm has been amp-"

"I think he knows Tech." Crosshair cut his brother off.

"Are you okay?"

Hunter's arm was gone. Moving the blanket, the clone looked at where his arm should be. After a moment, he put the blanket back and just stared at his brothers.

"Are you okay." Wrecker repeated.

"I don't know."

"Losing a body part is a startling process. From the initial trauma to learning to cope with the loss of the amputated limb, it can take a while to fully heal. However, they should be able to fit you with a prosthetic." Tech walked over to Hunter as he talked.

"Something tells me this is not what he wants to hear." Wrecker spoke. He looked at Hunter, "do you want some alone time?"

"Yeah." Hunter didn't look at them. Instead he kept looking at the ceiling.

"We'll be nearby if you need anything." Wrecked touched the end of the bed as he spoke. Then Tech, Crosshair, and him left the room.

Trying to process what had happened to him, Hunter continued to stare at the ceiling. He knows Tech knows what will happen next but he's not sure if he wants to know. Prosthetics had advanced significantly over the years but they could never truly replace a flesh limb.

The amputation was to save his life, Hunter knew this. Still, he wondered why it had to happen. Why did he have to be so close to the tank that exploded? Why did the shrapnel land where it did? Whatever this cruel twist and fate had been, Hunter knew he had to live with it. After all, he had no choice.

Whumptober Day 1: Race Against the Clock

Fandom: The Bad Batch

Summary: Wrecker is tasked with disarming a bomb. The problem is that it's strapped to a soldier.

"Are you sure you can do this?" Hunter looked at Wrecker. Then he looked at the situation in front of them. The separatist had gotten ahold of a reg and strapped a bomb to him. Unless the Jedi general gave himself over, the reg would die and likely kill anyone around him.

"Relax, defusing bombs is what I'm good at!' Wrecker smiled as he looked at the separatist bomb. In truth, he was nervous. However, he was trained to disarm bombs; he had to give it a try.

Walking to the man, Wrecker tried to comfort him. The faint beeping of a timer sent small amount of fear into the clone. "Do ya know how much time you have?"

The clone looked nervous. "Is that going to change if you help me or not?"

Looking back the others, Hunter nodded slightly. Then Wrecker looked at the man in front of him. He had to try no matter what, right? "No."

Hunter wasn't sure if he was surprised or not. Out of all of them, Wrecker was the most sympathetic to the regs.

"Four minutes." The man's voice shook as he spoke.

"Okay. I'm gonna get you out of this." Wrecked did his best to sound confident. There were only two ways this could end; two dead men or none.

    "Wrecker, be careful." Hunter cautioned.

"Yeah yeah. I've got this!" Approaching the clone, Wrecker started to take a look at the bomb. It was a simple Separatist bomb, nothing he couldn't disarm. However most of the time he didn't have three and a half minutes or a trembling man to deal with.

There was a small timer. It haunted Wrecker. Looking at the wires, he grabbed the wire cutters. It was only then he realized his hands were shaking.

Three minutes and fifteen seconds. There were a few different colored wires. A red and blue one stuck out the most. There were yellow and green ones as well; two of each color. Scanning the bomb, Wrecker looked to find where each wire led to.

Three minutes flat. The yellow and green wires seemed to lead to the timer and part of the explosive mechanisms. The demolitionist couldn't cut them yet. The green one that led to the timer never needed to be cut.

Two minutes and thirty seconds left before the two men and some others were taken out. "Wrecker, how's it going?" Wrecker didn't answer. Instead he focused on the bomb. Hunter listened to the sound of the timer. It seemed like the only thing he could hear. "Tech, evacuate the area." His brother nodded before started too e people back.

The red wire was the most clechy of the wires to be the one to cut. Then again blue was pretty cleachay to. That didn't matter. The two wires were hidden deeper in the bomb. They were more likely to bee what he needed. Still Wrecker had figure out which one to cut first. Red or blue?

Two minutes and two seconds. Two minutes and one second be fore the bomb went off.

"Are you sure you can do this?" The man's voice shook.

"Yep." Wrecker lied. He hated that damn clock. Everytime he looked at it, it made him feel worse. His stomach felt like it was doing summersaults. Still, he knew that he was smart. Bombs were his thing so there was no way he could mess this up. Even if he had one minute and forty six seconds left.

Looking past the wires, Wrecker studied the rest of the bomb. Finding the exploding mechanism should make firming the right wire easier. It took a moment to find; a moment Wrecker was t sure he had.

Thirty seconds. Red or blue? Unsure, Wrecker staried a little harder. Red or blue?

Fifteen seconds. Finding the answer he had been looking for, Wrecker gently grabbed the blue wire. He raised his other hand to the wire and placed the wire cutters close around the wire. With seven seconds left, Wrecker cut the blue wire. Then the red. The timer continued but the bomb had been dealt with.

There was one second on the clock now. Making eye contact with the clone, they waited for it to hit zero. Part of Wrecker feared he would have been wrong and one of the green or yellow wires had to go. To his relief, the two were fine when the clock hit zero.

Sighing, Wrecker laughed a little. "See? I told you!" He looked back at Hunter and smiled. "I told you."

"Great. Can we get this thing off me?" The reg held back tears as he spoke.

"Yep! I'll do that." Slowly, Wrecker released the clone from his no longer explosive prison. "There you go."

    "Thank you. Really, thank you."

"Eh, it's part of what I'm good for! Say, you want something to eat, reg?"

"Comet, and sure, that sounds nice."

    "Sweet!"
