     - also let me know i anything is inaccurate so i can quickly make some changes and educate myself further!Â
What is happening in Yemen?
This is the largest humanitarian crisis in the world. There are Yemeni children that still trapped in Yemen that aren’t getting the resources that they need. Not only are they trapped in Yemen, but they are also dealing with COVID-19. Sanitation and clean water supplies are in short supply.Â
How did the war start? for context
The roots started in Spring 2011, an uprising forced the long-time authoritarian president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, to hand over his position to his deputy, Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi. It was supposed to be a new era for peace but instead, president Hadi struggled with militant attacks, corruption, food insecurity, and loyalty to Saleh.Â
The fighting began in 2014 when the Houthi Shia Muslim rebel movement took advantage of the new president’s weakness and took control of the norther Saada province and areas around it. The Houthis went to take the capiatl of Sanaa, forcing Hadi into exile abroad.
It escalated dramatically in March 2015 when Saudi Arabia and eight other mostly Sunni Arab states - alongside with US, UK, and France, began air strikes against the Houthis, with the intention of restoring Hadi’s government.
The Saudi-led coalition feared that the continued success of the Houthis would give their rivals more regional power, and Iran a foothold in Yemen. The Houthis broke with Saleh and was killed by Houthi fighters in December of 2017. On the anti-Houthi side, militias include separatists seeking independence for south Yemen and factions who oppose the idea.
The stalemate has produced an unrelenting humanitarian crisis, with at least 8.4 million people at the risk of starvation. 22.2 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. Sever acute malnutrition is threatening the lives of almost 400,000 children under the age of five.
Not only has Yemen’s health system collapsed, but the world’s largest cholera outbreak has killed thousands, even more so now with the recent COVID-19 outbreaks.Â
In June 2018, the Saudi-backed government forces began an assault on the key rebel-held port of Hudaydah, the entry point for the vast majority of aid going into Yemen and a lifeline for those who are starving.Â
