Newly Completed Scale Dragon Tail With Mottled Red Stripes On A Black Background, Plus A Full Line Of

Newly completed scale dragon tail with mottled red stripes on a black background, plus a full line of spikes down the spine. The last photo I really liked because it showed off the swinging motion of the tail so well.
I also just finished writing up my tail ordering guide and posting it on this blog. If you're interested, check it out: http://armoreddragon.tumblr.com/tails

More Posts from Armoreddragon

I designed this black ram mask for a friend to wear in a LARP. There were only a couple days between when he was given the character and when the game started, so I had to design and produce it pretty quickly. So I was happy that the horns worked in the way I had thought they would without having to adjust them and make more copies.
Not an especially complicated design, but it is the largest mask I've made so far. I'll need to get bigger shipping boxes if I want to sell more copies of it.
He swears his character is not the Devil. Nobody believes him.
(( Out of curiosity, do you make full scale sets of armors? ))
I have made a scale shirt before, for myself. It was one of my first big projects. I'm actually finally now working on my first armor shirt commissioned by someone. I'd been wanting to do one for years.
I'm also slowly working on different types of armor pieces. I'm currently mulling over designs for pauldrons and bracers. These are mostly leather-based, but I'm working on how to build them with scales included.

Wooden scale maille bracelet I just made. I've been meaning to do this for years, but the arrival of the clear plastic scales finally goaded me into CADing up the dimensions and laser cutting the wood.
This wood is .8 mm thick plywood, so it's actually a good deal stronger than you'd expect. This first batch of scales I just cut quickly out of a scrap piece the laser shop had lying around. The next time I do it I'll be finishing the wood before I cut it, probably using tung oil. It'll deepen the color a bit, draw out the grain, make it a bit more lustrous, and help it avoid getting dirty.
I'm seriously contemplating making something big like a shirt out of wooden scales, and doing stuff like varying the size and shape of the scales along the piece to give it different textures. I may also look into getting veneers of fancy woods to laminate onto the wood before I cut it. (I need plywood because I don't trust planks of hardwoods not to split in the direction of the grain.)
Oh, and you can follow the link at the beginning to find this on my Etsy store!

A set of pauldrons or spaulders I made as a prototype. I'm thinking of working on more intensive or detailed designs for this sort of thing, but I figured I'd start out with something simple.
This leather isn't even stained or finished. The shoulder pieces are from a thicker hide of a different quality, which is a good deal stiffer than the leather I used for the straps. It just also happens to be darker.
The hardware is all nickel-plated: rivets, 2-inch rings, and buckles. The connection between the shoulder pieces and the straps is with a removable Chicago screw, so that distance can also be adjusted for proper fit.
Also, dang it was cold.

Here's what happens when I'm restless late at night. I make odd things.
Mostly this came about because of a new tool I got, that being a strap cutter. As advertised, it makes cutting these straps really easy. Who'd have thought? Then I just stained them black, cut them to length and added snaps appropriately. All told it took about 2 hours.
I hope you like mediocre kitchen photos. Getting people to help me take photos outside somewhere that looks nice during daylight is hard.
