Yup, School Is Almost Here. Can You Believe It? I Totally Feel Like Summer Just Started And Now Its Already

Yup, school is almost here. Can you believe it? I totally feel like summer just started and now it’s already August. Time seriously flies. As someone who is headed into her fourth year of university, once upon a time, I lived in a dorm! It was definitely an adjustment being placed in a little room with another person and expected to live with them! It can be super stressful packing everything and getting everything ready for the big move, so here’s a little list of my ‘must haves’ for anyone headed off to university or college!

General Items

Bed Risers: Dorms are tiny spaces and storage can be hard to come by. To make extra room, bed risers can be used to lift your bed up off the ground to allow for totes or clear plastic bins to be slid under for clothing, shoes, whatever!

Under Bed Totes: These are slim enough to slide under your bed and provide more storage space for your clothes and what not. When I lived in my dorm, I used these for my shoes and socks!

Shower Caddy and Shower Flip Flops: A shower caddy is great for carrying your shower essentials back and forth from the showers (if they’re shared. Also, invest in a pair of flip flops to wear in shared communal showers. These flips flops from Forever 21 are 3$ and are plain old plastic.

Laundry Bag with Drawstring: More often than not, students have to travel to some location to do their laundry. Ensure that you have a quality heavy duty laundry bag that you can sling over your shoulder. Make sure that you don’t let the laundry pile up (like me), worst thing you can do!

Mesh Washing Bags: Along with a decent laundry bag, purchasing mesh washing bags for your delicates can be a lifesaver. Heavy duty washing machines can sometimes do a number on your bras, underwear, socks, etc. These mesh bags allow for your delicates to still get washed but not get ruined.

Command Strips: Since most dorms don’t allow holes in walls, these are your best friend when it comes to hanging photos and decorating your walls. All you do is stick them on, hang and then peel them off whenever you’re ready!

A Pouf or Bean Bag Chair: Sometimes it can be hard to have comfortable seating in your room. If space permits, consider getting a cute little chair or fuzzy pouf for guests! This chair is super cute and colourful as well!

Twinkle Lights: These look amazing around your bed and around desks. They create a super cute ambiance that helps calm the stress during peak assignment and exam times. Plus they’re cheap! Just make sure you buy indoor lights and don’t put anything flammable near them.

Wax Warmer: Check with your dorm if these are permitted first. I don’t recommend sneaking them in (but that’s what I did). They’re an alternative to candles. Just be sure to turn them off when you leave for class and don’t spill them!

Super Cute Bedding: I love this set from Anthropologie for a dorm room. Make your room like your home and make it comfortable! I believe that good bedding is something everyone should have.

Wall Art: You can DIY some or you can buy some from almost any store!

Desk Items

Pen Holders: They come in a variety of colours and can keep your desk from becoming a disaster zone of stationery things.

Bits and Bobs Tray: For all those little things that just need a home (paperclips, staplers, etc.)

Stapler: Most people forget this simple item and it’s honestly one of the most important! So you can easily staple your assignments together prior to handing them in.

Desk Calendar: Perfect for laying out your due dates and social events. Look for one that can either lay flat on your desk or hang on your wall. These are a lifesaver.

Agenda: I think every person should learn to use one of them! Some of my favourites are this one by Lilly Pulitzer, this one by Kate Spade, and this one by Ban.Do.

Corkboard and Cute Push Pins: This cork board has a cute damask pattern and these push pins are little bows!

Picture Frames: You can go the traditional route or do something like this, where you can hang your photos on a cute little string!

Notebooks for Class: These can be super generic or you can spice it up with some cute printed notebooks, like this one by Ban.Do

Pens: Self Explanatory

Technology

A Computer Case: If you’re going to be travelling to and from class and throwing your laptop into your bag, you’re going to want to protect it. I like soft cases because I can also use them to hold things like papers and what not.

Keyboard Cover: Protects your keys from crumbs and unwanted wear and tear. Also silences the keys so you don’t aggravate a roommate when doing late night work.

USB Drive: For transporting your assignments!

iPad Case: If you have an iPad, definitely invest in a good sturdy case.

Skype: To talk to your parents when you miss them.

I’m going to slowly add to this list, but here is a pretty comprehensive list so far! Please let me know if you have any questions in regards to those first year jitters! I’d be happy to answer!

Back To School In Two Days And I Cant Be More Excited!!!! Honestly, The Last Time I Was This Enticed

Back To School In Two Days And I Cant Be More Excited!!!! Honestly, The Last Time I Was This Enticed
Back To School In Two Days And I Cant Be More Excited!!!! Honestly, The Last Time I Was This Enticed

Back to school in two days and I can’t be more excited!!!! Honestly, the last time I was this enticed to go back to school was in my third year in high school which was 4 years ago, and now as I am entering my third year in university, I’m feeling it again. Maybe there’s just something about third years. Haha. Anyway, here’s a little something from my first semester last year!

This is an 8-page bullet reviewer from my HST 201B (Mainland Southeast Asia) class about the country of Laos. Basically, I annotated and highlighted a lot which made it easier for me to understand everything. Btw, I take my history classes VERY seriously as it is like my favorite subject. Too bad I won’t have them anymore.

Details:

ANNOTATIONS & HIGHLIGHTS: I printed it with a 4-inch (not sure) space at the left side which is where I will place details about the bullets. For example, the first bullet states “LDR: The Lao People’s Democratic Republic”, and my job is to highlight the main point which is “Lao People’s Democratic Republic” and put what it’s about on the left side of it. In this case, the answer is “Official name”. So if I decide to test my self, I will simply cover the right portion and try to answer them myself.

COLORFUL POST-ITS: As you can see I placed colorful post-its for mnemonics or figures or additional info about the bullet. For example, the second bullet pointed out the countries that share borders with Laos– Thailand, Burma, China, Vietnam and Cambodia. So my job is to put a small post-it underneath and place the first letters of the countries– “T-B-Ch-V-Ca” for easier memorization.

YELLOW POST-ITS: I put those yellow post-its at the bottom right part of the reviewers labeled as “POINTS TO REMEMBER” to put anything that I think would be significant answers on the exam on that particular page. They could be people, dates, doctrines/treaties, etc.

VOCABULARY: I basically underline (with a black pen or any pen) a word that I don’t understand and put it’s meaning beside it.

Color-coding content:

ANNOTATIONS & HIGHLIGHTS: I use two colors to highlight the bullets. Nothing is color-coded as I just want to use them alternately so that they would be easier to find and these unfamiliar terms won’t make me feel dizzy. As for the annotations, two colored pens too and simply partner them with the two highlighters.

yellow highlighter on the right side, blue pen on the annotations on the left side

orange highlighter on the right, green pen on the left

black for the chapter/titles and vocabulary

COLORFUL POST-ITS (mnemonics):

pink for mnemonics

green for figures (land area, population, stats, etc.)

blue for additional info

YELLOW POST-ITS (important terms):

green for general state description/events

blue for politics

orange for places

violet for important people

That’s it! This is how it works for me but I’m pretty sure it looks messy for others. Anyway, it’s been a while since I posted so I wanted to share this, and if it helped/something wasn’t clear, just let me know!

x

P.S. They have captions.
