Do you know when Common Enemy will be finished?

Uh oh, what did Jake and Quaritch find?? 👀👀👀

I'm finally done with my long hiatus from Common Enemy and got the first 3 pages of part 2 down! You might notice a change in quality from part 1, and that's partially because I started working full-time so I don't have as much free time as I used to, and partially because I took such a long break from Common Enemy that I intimidated myself out of finishing it, and I compromised by deciding I would finish it, but I wouldn't hold myself to my usual standard.

To answer your question, I'm sorry, I don't know when I'll be finished. My schedule is too crazy right now to give an estimate, but I'll post updates on my progress. I'm so excited to share the complete story with you all once I finish!

I still believe to this day that we are missing a scene that should've happened between Spider agreeing the "ride along" and the ikran-bonding scene. I get why Quaritch started to like Spider cause that's his kid even if he won't admit it, but we don't know what happened for Spider to start liking Quaritch. Jack Champion once referenced a scene he filmed that never made it to the final cut where he bullied the recoms into going barefoot. We never see the recoms wear shoes again after Spider joins the group so we know this scene "happened" just off-screen. There's gotta be just one little scene of Quaritch doing something to Spider that made him start to trust him that they cut for whatever reason. I'm not saying there should've been a whole extra arc or anything, but come on, give us SOMETHING!

This is why so many people ended up hating or not understanding Spider. They TOLD us through the way Quaritch and Spider behaved towards each other that they cared, but they didn't SHOW us what actually happened! SHOW not TELL is so important in story telling!

If I don't find out what happened with spider and quaritch in the months that they spent together next movie I’m storming down to disney myself

Miles the Terrible and his son Miles

Im obviously inspired by the painting Ivan the Terrible and his son Ivan. I find their dynamic is quite fitting for Quaritch and Spider despite the fact that i dont think Quaritch deserves to be Spider’s dad

As someone who is judged for where i came from and who my father is, i can relate to Spider on a personal level. So no i dont want to see the kids take on their fathers’ feud, and i hope the take away from this painting is not how fatherly Quaritch is. I hope i convey a terror

Also i like Spider with fluffy curly hair 🫶

And i painted this in a burst of energy so it kinda a little crooked and messy 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

ooh okay now I understand. Wow, the room for angst with Lo'ak and Spider... from Spider's pov, Lo'ak has thrown away this amazing life he's always wanted, so no wonder he's in a bad mood. And from Lo'ak's pov, Spider's always had the freedom and lack of pressure and expectations he's always wanted, so Lo'ak's finally run away and gotten what he always wanted with Quaritch and the recoms since he couldn't get it with the Sullies.

I can definitely see Spider and Leo butting heads over their differences! A Na'vi who sees Na'vi as evil vs a human who sees humans as evil is interesting. And I guess Kai would be more wary of Spider if Leo butts heads with him... and poor Leo will always think of sweet little baby MJ when he looks at Spider awww.

This is your au, you do whatever you want with it, but I think it would be a really interesting story if Spider finds a way to escape (since Quaritch is less evil in this au, maybe he wouldn't put a tracker in Spider's mask so Spider finds an opportunity to slip away when they're distracted) and makes his way back to Jake and co. And Jake, maybe losing Lo'ak made him reflect on his parenting and he regrets the way he treated Spider so he officially takes Spider in. So we have Jake adopting Quaritch's son and Quaritch adopting Jake's son. And whenever Jake and Quaritch run into each other they're like:

"You stole my son!"

"No, YOU stole my son!"

wait I have another question!

so I understand Kai and Leo are adopted by Quaritch when they're young, and Lo'ak runs away from home because of problems with Jake and then Quaritch takes him in after he gets injured. But what's Spider's deal?

In all of your art, Spider looks like he's not happy to be there, while the other boys all seem happy. Why is Spider still acting like he's a prisoner? Wouldn't Spider be happy that Lo'ak is there since they're best friends? And you described Kai as being like "mowgli" and since Spider is like "tarzan" wouldn't they get along since they're similar?

About Spider

He gets captured almost like in canon. The difference is that of all the recoms, only Warren dies in the process (I can do anything I want in my au and I want recoms to live😌)

So he behaves pretty much like in the movie. About Lo’ak - Spider just genuinely doesn’t understand why would Lo’ak leave his family and everything else (everything Spider ever wanted) and join the “bad guys”. And seeing Lo’ak admiring Quaritch and craving his approval is weird to him. He doesn’t understand it’s literally what he was like around Jake - and that in turn was weird for Lo’ak

The only difference between their cases is that Quaritch is really starting to treat Lo’ak like a son, while Spider has never been anything more than a stray cat to Jake (angst yeah)

Leo and Spider also mirror each other, but in a different way (a human boy raised among the na’vi and a na’vi boy raised by humans). They will have a few problems becoming friends at first, mostly because their very different views of na’vi and humans

Also for Leo the villain is Sully because he’s the reason his father and so many people he cares about are gone. Na’vi - they abandoned him. Quaritch, on the other hand, is a hero to him. He saved Leo when he was a baby and he's been taking care of him ever since

It’s all a matter of perspective

Kai is… different. Spider is Tarzan because he has dreadlocks and climbs trees and I guess you can say he lived in the forest, but Kai is Mowgl because he was literally raised by animals. He behaves more like an animal than like na’vi or human

So he’s close to nature and animals, but not to na’vi culture or Eywa (though he can speak na’vi and he knows other stuff, how to use a bow for example - his father taught him before he died). Also Kai is… you can say weird? wild?… He doesn’t talk much. And he only cares about what Leo cares about.

But after all eventually all the kids gradually get along and become good friends

How did Quaritch find Leo and Kai after he became a recombinant?

Hello! I've been looking through your blog trying to piece together your au story and I have a question. How does Quaritch's timeline play out?

I understand that he found Kai and Leo when he was still human and adopted them, that's why Kai and Leo are pictured holding baby Spider. And I understand that he later takes in Lo'ak and kidnaps Spider after he becomes a recom.

But what I don't understand is what happened in the middle? Human-Quaritch was dead for 15 years before the recombinant was created. What happened to Kai and Leo while he was dead? If 15 years passed, why do Kai and Leo look like they're not that much older than Lo'ak and Spider?

Ok so

While still being human Quaritch finds 1 year old Leo and adopts him. It takes place 10 years before the canon events

He raises him with help from his squad (uncle Lyle, aunt Maria (Walker) and others

Then, 9 years later Spider (or MJ - Leo calls him that) is born, and Leo is very excited to be an older brother

But when the battle ends the way it does, they put Leo in cryo (like the main character of Frontiers of Pandora, only in different place).

Kai is halfbreed between an avatar and na’vi. When the battle happened he was only 1 year old. When he was 8 his parents die and he lives in forest alone since then.

But when he’s 12 he finds Leo’s cryo capsule. Then they start to live together

With time they become very close

So Kai only knows Quaritch through Leo's stories

When recom Quaritch arrives at Pandora Leo is 15 and Kai is 16

I hope this all isn't too confusing😅

Контекст: В этой ау, когда у Кири случается приступ, Ронал справляется сама, и Норм с Максом не летят к Меткайина. Следовательно, RDA не знает, что Салли прячется среди рифовых на’ви. Через некоторое время Ардмор даёт Дежа Блю новую миссию (не придумала ещё какую, но что-то связанное с рифовыми на’ви, может что-то дипломатическое). Так что рекомы просто выполняют миссию, параллельно отдыхая с детьми на море, плавая и играя в прятки на икранах - что и происходит в комиксе.

uni/college Spider version (he's literally me rn)

This au is so interesting! For anyone too lazy to use a translator, basically lo'ak runs away from home bc of family issues before the events of Avatar 2. Spider is kidnapped by the recoms like in canon, and Lo'ak is later found by the recoms after getting injured by a thanator and goes with them willingly bc he feels abandoned by his family. (idk if they're still hunting Jake in this au cause i have a hard time picturing loak joining up with people trying to kill his dad no matter how bad his daddy issues got)

I love the detail how Lo'ak, the na'vi, is more interested in human culture while Spider, the actual human, clings to the na'vi way and wants nothing to do with the human stuff! I think it's a really interesting interpretation of their characters. They both feel extremely out of place, like they're torn between two worlds and they cope differently. Spider's spent his whole life being told humans are evil, especially his father, so he tries to reject anything human in an attempt to distance himself from his heritage. Lo'ak's spent his whole life feeling outcast, even within his own family, so when he gets the opportunity to explore a new identity he embraces it even though it goes against everything he's been taught.

Is there a fic for this? I'd love to read it!

RDA Ло’ак ау

Устав быть изгоем в клане и в собственной семье, Ло’ак сбегает из дома, взяв с собой только несколько вещей и своего икрана. Салли обеспокоены, но Джейк говорит, что это просто подростковый бунт и что через некоторое время Ло’ак сам вернётся. Несмотря на это его все ищут, Нетейам каждый день летает всё дальше в надежде заметить икрана Ло’ака. Через две недели происходит столкновение Салли с рекомами и похищение Паука, после чего Салли покидают Оматикайа, попросив Макса и Норма продолжать поиски Ло’ака и сообщить им, как только он найдётся.

Проходит ещё две недели, и Ло’ак натыкается на следы ботинок размером с на’ви (сцена как в фильме). Он идёт по следу, не замечая, что заходит на территорию танатора

Не буду дальше вдаваться в подробности) но в общем происходит стычка с танатором, которая заканчивается тем, что танатор ранит Ло’ака (несильно), а самого танатора убивает Куоритч

Ло’ака перевязывают, и хотя поначалу Куоритч хочет взять его в заложники, в конце получается что Ло’ак идёт с ним добровольно (после того как оба понимают что Салли оставили Ло’ака и ушли без него)

Вот как-то так

Среди рекомов Ло’ак не чувствует себя изгоем. Лео и Кай становятся его друзьями (и может быть в Лео он видит более понимающего старшего брата). С реком Джейком после первоначальной неловкости тоже находит общий язык и общую неприязнь к другому Джейку. Свою потребность в одобрении же он переключает на Куоритча (и о чудо он его получает). С Пауком появляются некоторые недопонимания, но они всё ещё бро

А ещё Ло’аку очень нравятся всякие человеческие штучки. От фильмов и видеоигр до еды и одежды - ему всё это интересно (в отличие от Паука)

«-Хей! Хорошо выглядишь! Тебя девчонки одели?

-Ага

-И Паук! Ты выглядишь…»

«-Голым. Ну, по крайней мере тебя вымыли. А то ты уже начинал вонять»

working on Beasts of Burden today if my damn house doesn't blow over 🌪️ smfh BUT here's some misc fankid AU Spider stuff I jotted down last night:

Idk who or where it was said but someone in [discord server] at some point was like "quaritch with a daughter would be too easy [ofc he'd adore her.] Sons are where the drama is at" and I agree which is why this au is my fluffy dopamine Minecraft generator bdjdjdk

Anyway I'm also a drama-loving bitch Quaritch and Spider are both Mutually Uncomfortable with each other throughout this whole situation and equally unsure what to do about it or how to progress

on one hand the recoms don't get around to doing anything worse than the incident in the woods but on the other hand, Seadragon fight never happens so:

1. knife confrontation accidental feelings reveal also never happens

2. they don't grow quite as close as canon since quaritch's attention during that period is also split between lyle, the pregnancy, and defection

Spider wants so badly to just hate or be ambivalent towards his father. He moves in w the sullies to no pushback from Q (although he's a lil disappointed/huffy about it). On the other side of the coin, now he's not even trying to kill them or anything. He's just living his domestic-ass house arrest life next door and deep down he wants to get closer—he just doesn't want to get closer to *Quaritch.*

Q is admittedly Very busy with new parent chaos even after the defection debacle calms down, but mainly he just feels vague guilt re: his son.

He knows he loves him, but not at all in the same way he loves Ellie. He's acutely aware that while spider is his kid, he's not his baby. There's a small, yet important distinction there—which makes him feel bad even if he can't word it. He nearly gives up his life for Ellie before she's even born, and he didn't even stay alive for his son's sake, let alone surrender. it's all just really uncomfortable for him to think about, but it's not exactly something he can undo. He thinks Spider is at-best neutral towards him, so his best idea is to just leave it be (aka never talk about it ever out of Man Fright)

Spider feels a conflicting mix of comraderie and envy towards Ellie. He's glad she's not going through what he went though, but at the same time he just. Can't stand being around her for very long—at least not if Quaritch is there. It's too hard to watch him be all soft and sappy, even if spider doesn't want that kind of affection from quaritch. He doesn't feel as strong of a connection with her as he does the sullies, but he likes her. They grow closer as the years pass

Lyle only attempts to mediate once or twice. Neither of them pretend to have any true relationship to each other; Spider doesn't particularly like Lyle and Lyle doesn't particularly dislike Spider, and it just kinda cancels out.

Like several people, Spider doesn't know what his dad sees in him. They've had Very few 1:1 conversations before, but that doesn't stop Lyle—mainly bc he thinks them making up will help quaritch's mental state and because holy fuck their hands are full and working towards any amount of help is smth he's def interested in. At least, at the start. Spider watches her sometimes, but only when Q gets enough of his strength back to resume swimming/breath training (and even then it's rare that Lyle isn't watching her or bringing her along with Q so).

When I first saw the prompt, I was shocked, because I'd never thought of writing something like that before and it felt out of my comfort zone as I haven't written Neytiri much. I almost deleted it. But for some reason, it kept sitting in the back of my head and I finally decided just to give it a chance and write a little one shot. And that one shot turned into a two shot. Which turned into a three shot. So by the time I realized I had enough for three separate chapters I figured I might as well commit to making this a proper fic.

This was seriously the hardest thing I’ve ever written. When I first decided to attempt the prompt, my first thought was an AU where they adopt Spider right from the beginning, but then I thought it would be more interesting if I tried to keep things canonical but diverge from the main storyline instead. I tried so hard to write both Spider and Neytiri true to how they behave in canon while also trying to create a scenario where they would realistically bond like a mother and son. It’s really difficult since they have such a rocky relationship, I deadass think it would’ve been easier to write a Quaritch X Jake romance that sticks close to canon lmao. I'm not sure if the end result is exactly what anon had in mind, but this is what came of it, so I hope y'all enjoy!

and yes, I know I also said I would continue Special Treatment and Lucky Number Five. I am planning to continue them, my life's just gotten a lot busier, so I can't make any promises about updates unfortunately.

And as for Common Enemy... 😭😭😭 I think I intimidated myself out of finishing it, I might just go back and clean up the sketches and then post the comic as it is right now, you guys will still be able to enjoy the story, it'll just have sketchy art instead of the usual finished product, cause I bit off way more than I could chew with 15 pages.

I have this idea about Spider gradually starting to wear some clothes in the months during A2, including (cutoff) shorts lmao. I was briefly in the airforce version of ROTC during highschool and I despised wearing BDUs in humid heat. Texture of sandpaper and breathability of cellophane,,, hellish

(I really want to make a second post just elaborating on this concept/talking abt his character design, so lmk if you're interested! I also hope to use it in a video essay sometime, once an HD copy of the movie becomes available)

Ok, so about Dr Karina Mogue. I think she will be the RDA scientist who will try to figure out how Spider was changed and how it can be replicated. I think she will be brought to study the results from whatever tests they'll run on him (maybe even the samples they will take) when he is captured by RDA after the miracle. I also think that it will lead her to trying to figure out Eywa - what she is and how she works.

I'm not sure if she will be evil (Michelle Yeoh was so great and clearly had a lot of fun in Star Trek in very Recom Quaritch like role) and try to use this knowledge to destroy Eywa and adapt humans for Pandora so they can replace Na'vi. Or if her work will lead her to change sides and maybe use her knowledge to save Earth instead (I'm rooting for this option).

ooh that's a great theory! With all the strange stuff leaked that will happen to Spider in A3, it makes sense the RDA would want to study it, and if there's gonna be a big focus on it in future movies it also makes sense they'd introduce a new character as the main scientist studying it. I hope she'll join the resistance too, but I bet Yeoh will be able to pull of a good villain if not!

But this just makes me scared for Spider. It's unclear how the "miracle" will happen to him, but one theory my reddit friend u/ellestra came up with is that Spider himself won't have a physical or genetic change, but rather that the sacred strands from one of the spirit trees will go inside of his lungs and act as a built in filter, filtering out the harmful gases in the atmosphere but letting oxygen pass through. Similar to how humans on earth have bacteria cultures in our guts that have a symbiotic relationship with us; the bacteria cultures get a warm, moist environment to live in and we get help digesting our food. The sacred strands will be like that, living off the nutrients in his body and filtering the unbreathable atmosphere in return.

It would be similar to what happened to Grace, when the na'vi were able to create a temporary kuru for her so she could connect with Eywa before dying. I believe u/Ellestra's theory is pretty likely, much more likely than Spider undergoing a genetic/physical mutation, cause basically his entire cardiovascular and respiratory system would have to be drastically changed to adapt to Pandora's gasses.

All this is to say is that if the RDA wants figure out what happened to Spider, they'll probably have to look into his lungs, which I imagine would involve some extremely unethical science experiments... poor Spider 😭 I hope Dr. Mogue will be a good guy and not let anything too terrible happen to him if this theory is true but we'll have to wait and see.

Name: tslikslär: Cave crawler || (Tslikx = crawl / slär = cave)

They live underground with the Alitawe in their own small, self-dug cave system. They are known to come out of their small tunnels and walk around and interact with the Alitawe village. The Na'vi also know that the Tslikslär love to snack on fruits. These are often "stolen" by the Tslikslär and as a thank you the Tslikslär leave small gemstones behind. They find these gemstones when digging in the ground and stow them in their belly pockets. The gems are friendly gifts to the Alitawe. The Na'vi then use these gemstones to make jewelry or decorate their clothes with them. It is now so common for the Tslikslär to “steal” fruit that the Alitawe collect extra fruit for their little friends and place it on plates on the ground for easier access.

^me looking at all the people who genuinely believe Spider is going to get killed/harmed for the "horrible" crime of *checks notes* saving the life of a bad guy who saved his life twice, and knowing I have to wait for Avatar 3 to come out to laugh at them.

Seriously y'all, forgiveness is a huge theme of Avatar. Jake gets forgiven for lying and giving Quaritch the intel he needed to take down Hometree and Teylan gets forgiven for helping Mercer, which are both objectively worse crimes than simply sparing the life of an evil person. Yes, the Sullies are gonna be angry at Spider, understandably so, and he'll probably have a "You'll never be one of the People!" moment like Jake. But I keep seeing people have this weird fantasy of Neytiri attacking Spider after finding out and it being portrayed as the right thing for her to do, which is just insane and completely goes against the themes of the other movies.

Could you imagine what a depressing message that would send? Spider had evil parents, therefore he was always secretly evil and Neytiri was the only one who could see it, and then once Spider shows his "evil ways" Neytiri kills him and gets to say "I told you so" to everyone who didn't judge Spider based off his parents, because obviously Spider never had a chance of being a good person before he was even born, and Neytiri doesn't need to reflect on her own biases and grow as a person because she was always right about him. The message we want the audience to take away from this is that you should always judge people based on circumstances outside of their control and not what kind of person they are! Jeez. James Cameron would never.

One of the things I'm most excited to see in Avatar 3 is how the Sullies will learn that Spider saved the life of Quaritch.

Personally, I believe that Spider will tell them himself. I'm just not sure whether he'll confess before or after they learn Quaritch is alive. If he tells them before, I think the Sullies would be a bit more forgiving since they'll have time to process and accept that Quaritch survived, but if he keeps it a secret until after they'll be more likely to react badly since they'll still be struggling with the shock that Quaritch is still out there.

I don't think Quaritch will tell them himself because he'd be afraid of them, specifically Neytiri, reacting badly and possibly hurting Spider. However, I could see a scenario where Quaritch is trying to talk Spider into coming with him and Spider refuses, so then Quaritch tells one of the Sullies how he's still alive in an effort to make Spider feel like the Sullies hate him now and he has no choice but to qo with Quaritch.

There's also a possibility that both Spider and Quaritch will keep their mouths shut and one of the Sullies will guess what he did, but I feel like this one is less likely to happen since the family was so distracted with rescuing each other from drowning that they didn't pay much attention to Spider disappearing for awhile.

But this is all just my two cents on it, I'd love to hear what everyone else thinks!
