hey now that it’s disability pride month can you please remember to include people with Down syndrome and other chromosomal defects into your activism. they’re so often left behind. I literally never see anyone spreading Down syndrome awareness that isn’t close family of someone with Down syndrome. They exist and they’re living breathing humans who deserve just as much activism as every other disabled person

i remember the (fantastic!) “assume that i can” ad and seeing some people react to a part where the actress (madison tevlin) said “i can have sex” being like “but 🥺 if she has down syndrome how can she consent???” blowing you up with 5000 nukes. people took the (true and upsetting) facts about developmentally and intellectually disabled people being at a higher risk of sexual abuse and for some reason their takeaway was that theyre all widdle babies who dont even know what sex is 🥺🥺🥺 and like. i have been...i cant think of any other phrasing other than “forcibly desexualised” by people around me as a level one autistic if ableds react to me like that i cant imagine what its like for autistic people who need more support or people w intellectual disabilitie (this isnt to say that the prescence of intellectual disability can NEVER affect someones ability to consent. but assuming an adult woman with down syndrome can't when she's said out loud with her mouth that she can is fucking ableist) Important!
