There’s a fic on fanfiction(.)net that I’ve kept tabs on for years to see if it’s been updated or not. While I’m no longer even in the fandom it’s written for, it just has one of the greatest storylines I’ve ever read. Last time it was updated was 2011.

The other day, I decided to reread the entire thing and leave a very in-depth review of what I thought of each chapter. I also mentioned how I started reading it when I was 13 and am now 21, but always came back to see if it was ever finished because I loved it so dearly.

Today, said author sent me a private message saying that her analytics showed that the story was still getting views even after all these years, but no one ever bothered to leave reviews other than “update soon!!!”, so she never felt motivated enough to finish it. She said that me reviewing every single chapter with lengthy paragraphs made her cry and meant the world to her. She also mentioned that she felt encouraged to write the two remaining chapters needed to complete the story and that she would send me a message the night before she updates the fic.

I’m literally sobbing. I’m so excited :’)

Please always remember to leave a review when reading fanfiction!!! It means a lot to a writer.

Do something!

just heard the new number is ~9000 arrests of protestors in the US so i think today would be a good day to donate to bail funds if you have not already!!

I hope you know that you are really cool and creative!! We will support you no matter what

So what made you decide to have Vicky die the way she did in your story?

Okay, I understand that this is a question for the stream, but I think it’d be better if I answer it here and not there because, well, due to the nature of How You Lived, there will be darker elements that will likely trigger bad memories/nightmares for some people in my audience. At least here, it’s optional to read, and it’s separate from the stream so no need to mute/turn away. The explanation will be under the cut.

Content Warning: Mentions of depression, anxiety, suicide, self harm, eating disorders, PTSD, murder, rape, torture, racism, hate crime, abuse

Okay, so I’ve been suffering from depression and anxiety for most of my life, with suicidal thoughts/actions, bulimia, and trauma from abuse to boot. So I was a bit of a morbid teenager. Did a pretty good job at hiding it, though. Ironically, one of my comforts was in the Investigation Discovery Channel (hell, the Discovery channels have been a constant in my life). I stumble onto the channel one day, and I was… well, stuck.

Cut to two years ago, when I first joined the Monster Prom fandom. I’ve always had the idea of writing a fanfic relating to Vicky’s death. As time went on and I got more information, as well as developed the character of Dr. Frances Schmidt, story elements changed; this I’ll further explain in the stream since I also got a question related to this story’s development.

I’ve always had the idea that Vicky was just one corpse stitched together again, and that detail was basically canon with the existence of her death certificate. So I thought, “Why would a corpse need to be stitched back together if all of the body parts came from a single body?”

Remember how I mentioned that I was into Investigation Discovery? I didn’t even need to see some shows on the channel for inspiration: I already had it. Yeah, my mind went to a dark place, but it logically made the most sense. Vicky’s killer was loosely inspired by many serial killers that were known in the 90s, but mainly Jeffrey Dahmer, who was known for attracting lovers only to rape them, murder them, and, in some cases, dismember them. (He's also based off of three men in my life that have contributed to my trauma/abuse, but that's a story for another day.)

Much like Dahmer, Vicky’s killer had very specific targets in mind, targets that he was attracted to. And considering that I set the flashbacks in the early 1990s, with racism on the rise like it is now, we have our motive. Even if I had known at the time Vicky was Jewish, her murder, sadly, would’ve made sense. Antisemitism did not go away. As for the rape and torture? Falls in line with being a Jeffrey Dahmer expy (as well as an expy of my ex-boyfriend).

So it was satisfying to write that Brian put an end to this monster, and right as he came back from the dead as well. No, I am never writing this scene out; there are some lines even I won’t cross. The next installment, under the working title, “The Undead Support Group,” will also have this scene alluded to, with slightly more detail, but I won’t go farther than that.

Those early mental health issues I’ve mentioned? I’ve also given some of those to this universe’s version of Vicky, in particular anxiety, PTSD, and self harm, those of which will be highlighted in this midquel. As an overachiever myself, having anxiety on top of that induces a lot of stress. Add trauma (in her case, from literally being the victim of a hate crime) to that and you have an overly stressed young woman.

Unlike me, I wanted to give Vicky a support system, something I wish that I had when I was younger. Polly is not her only source of support, thank the Goddess; she has her circle of friends, she has therapy as mentioned in How You Loved, she has her mom… For a long time, I had none of those things, and until recently, I only had one.

Second tweet in image states "A lot of plastic lab goggles are vented to prevent condensation, but you can use clear packing tape to seal them up. Conveniently, you can also leave the tape dangling a bit and then seal it back up when things get heated so condensation is less of a bother."

It's best practice to cover your face (N95 it up to protect yourself/others), avoid wearing 'unique' or custom attire, and conceal tattoos. Wear your shoes that you can run in." second tweet in image states "You don't need a special solution to clean tear gas out of people's eyes. Water or saline in a cheap peri bottle is a godsend. Be careful not to touch the peri bottle to anyone's eyes directly if you're treating multiples, you don't want to be spreading infection inadvertently."

I couldn't chop jalapenõs for at least a month after the 2020 gassings, my skin would burn just being around the oil in the air." second tweet in image states "Remove any tear gas-contaminated clothing ASAP. Keep it in a sealed plastic bag (ideally outside) until you can wash it (ideally multiple times). This is especially true if you have asthma or if you have pets - your clothes can give off chemicals that pets are very sensitive to."

DO NOT pick them up to toss them from the crowd unless you are wearing heat-protective gloves. They can burn you."

There's not much you can do about that, but be aware." second tweet in image states "Tear gas is usually deployed not by a spraying mechanism, but by firing canisters into a crowd. These are heavy, metal projectiles. you do not want to take one to the head, and you should keep your eyes open and be ready to assist in case others do." third tweet states "Tear gas is an abortifacient. Not much you can do about that, but if you're pregnant or TTC [trying to carry] you should be very aware of that reality so you can make informed decisions on the ground."

Be super-mindful about potentially incriminating speech." third tweet says "If you're white, mass arrests are really not the time to give police an earful. They'll often try and get their revenge by taking out their anger on the most vulnerable people in custody, especially nonwhite folks."
image nine: first tweet in image states "In my area, we generally recommend having an ID on you if you think you might get arrested (if you're engaging in jail-packing tactics, disregard). It's a personal choice, but it speeds up processing, which means you're less likely to get sent to county for the weekend." second tweet in image states "Don't thank cops at protests. Don't give them hugs and take cute photos with them. They aren't our friends, they use photos of that stuff for feel-good propaganda to counter accountability measures, and it makes the people they target feel like you don't have their back"
image ten: first tweet in image states "Prioritize your ability to run when it comes to footwear, but if you have steel toe shoes/boots that fit that need, that's a plus. Toes are vulnerable to police car trampling, and 'accidental' sideswiping by drivers who hate you and your cause." second tweet in image states "Photos are a complicated subject. Livestreaming is almost always a bad idea, since cops can use those streams to surveil, and since you may accidentally broadcast information that can be sued to identify or prosecute other protesters." third tweet says "Be very careful with night videography / photography at protests. I'm not going to say never do it, but be VERY mindful that folks tend to take more militant action at night and you don't want to accidentally incriminate anyone.
