Two weeks later 

The shriek of the telephone was piercingly shrill this early in the morning and on top of that, you had an enormous headache. 

Damn Alexis for convincing you to go out last night. 

You fumbled for the phone by your bed, eyes squeezed shut. 

“H’lo?” you rasped, coughing and smacking your mouth to get rid of the dryness. 

“Where the hell are you? It’s 10:30!” 

Wincing at your manager’s shrieking, you sat up, regretting it instantly at the nausea that attacked you. 

“Sorry, sorry, Kate. Went out with some friends last night, kinda stayed out late…” you trailed off sheepishly. Kate heaved a sigh. 

“Oh, for God’s sake. Go get presentable and meet me at the studio in twenty minutes. We’re meeting with your collab artist, remember?” 

That woke you up.

“Miss!” Richard Lester called.

You look up to see him unhappily crossing his arms.

You point to yourself questioningly and he nods, raising an eyebrow. Some of the other extras giggle and whisper.

“Listen, I’m not asking for much, but you look like you’re getting teeth pulled. It’s the Beatles! Look a little excited, yeah?” Richard asks and you nod, mumbling an apology.

“Okay, from the top. Group A, back to your spot. And... action!” The clapperboard slams and the group of girls are running again, screaming their heads off as directed. You follow the chase, smiling and reaching forward, attempting to grab at the boys’ coattails.

“Cut! That was great, let’s break for fifteen minutes.”

You stopped and caught your breath while the Beatles stepped out of the train and split up. Ringo and George headed for craft services, Paul went to Wardrobe and John walked your way, for some reason.

You didn’t pay him any mind as the extras had been told multiple times to not interact with the boys (not that that stopped some of them) and you weren’t looking to get into trouble.

“Hey,” John called behind you and you turned, uncapping a water bottle. You checked to make sure he wasn’t talking to anyone else before taking a sip of water.

“Hi,” you said after a moment, leaning against the wall.

“You smiled, it‘s a miracle,” John said, the ghost of a smirk on his lips.

“Yes, well, if I wanted to chase after a group of sweaty Liddypool boys, I would’ve stayed home and waited outside the pub.”

Your brain caught up with your mouth and your eyes widened, suddenly afraid John was going to fire you right then. Shockingly, he laughed, reaching past you to get a bottled water. You could smell his cologne and the hint of cigarettes as he hovered next to you.

“I like you,” John said, pulling back and giving you a genuine smile. Truthfully, you’d never been crazy for the Beatles; you’d happened to be hired as an extra for A Hard Day’s Night and that was the only reason you were here. But you could certainly see why some of your friends liked John the most.

“Really?” you asked instead of thinking of a quip back.

He nodded.

“You’re bold. I like that. Plus I’ve never seen someone look like they’re getting teeth pulled when they see us coming. ‘Cept for me auntie, maybe.”

You snorted.

“God bless your auntie.” You offered a hand.

“I’m Y/N,” you introduced.

John shook your hand and smiled.

“I’m John.”

You tilted your head and quirked your lips.

“Oh, really? Glad you told me. Thought I was talkin’ to one of the Everly Brothers.”

A blush dusted John’s cheeks and nose and you smiled gently.

“Just teasing ya. I’ve sure got a lot of nerve, huh?”

“Sure do. I like that though.”

You tutted.

“Odd. Guess I’ll have to try harder.”

John grinned, about to speak when someone announced through a megaphone that the extras playing train attendants needed to return to the scene.

You set off and John followed.

“You’re playing an attendant too?” he asked.

“That I am. I guess we’ll be seeing a bit more of each other,” you sighed dramatically, holding a hand to your head.

“Guess so.” John went left while you went right, but he turned before going into the train.

“Lookin’ forward to it!”

But it was understandable! This interview was your first in Europe. After your album had been released a few weeks ago, it had blown up in the U.K., so here you were tonight, preparing to be interviewed by Simon Dee, one of the more popular television personas. Your nerves were out of control.

Fic Summary: Reader and George meet as kids soon after she moves to Liverpool with her parents. Told throughout pieces of their childhood together, we see their friendship grow and the consequences of waiting too long.

Chapter Summary: After a not-so-nice day at school, Reader has a friendly encounter. She and George have a small heart-to-heart, and she starts to reconsider her feelings.

Warnings: Minor bullying/teasing? Other than that, it’s all fluff.

One of many downsides to secondary school - as you had only realized in your third year in secondary school - was that for some reason, at the end of each term, they felt the need to have some kind of themed dance. You’d never gone to any of them, but every time they announced one, you couldn’t help but groan.

If it wasn’t bad enough that they held them as often as possible, all of your friends were always so excited for them. They loved getting dressed up and dancing the night away, and honestly you really couldn’t blame them, it did sound fun, but you didn’t think it was for you. It might be a different story if they played music you’d come to love over the past year, but judging from what your friends told you, they never played any of that music. You supposed you had George to thank though, for changing your taste in music.

It also didn’t help that even if you wanted to go, all of your friends went with dates, and you’d hate to show up alone and be a third-wheel to everyone else when you hadn’t asked anyone nor had anyone asked you. 

That was a fact that never bothered you, but some of the students in your class seemed to enjoy.
