Chronic pain is so ridiculous because I can do a little jog to catch the streetcar at 12pm and still be in pain about it 9 hours later

Snowed again... how will my disability become an inconvenience in my life this time?

able bodied allies of disabled people when your disability genuinely has no secret upside and makes you useless to a late stage capitalist society

Able Bodied Allies Of Disabled People When Your Disability Genuinely Has No Secret Upside And Makes You

something ive noticed in disability spaces is how often we have had to beg and yell and argue to try and convey just a fraction of how little abled society values our lives.

it seems inconceivable to abled people who take their inherent worth of being alive for granted when you explain that the birth of a disabled person is considered a tragedy instead of a joy. that it's considered best to prevent that, and if not, that the disabled people who are already around can be quietly gotten rid of. that we're targeted for eugenics, and hate crimes for our very existence. that people consider disability enough to eradicate all of one's human worth - regardless of how you think, feel, dream. we often have to earn our right to be here, in the eyes of others.

disabled people have to periodically argue that the bare minimum that they need to live is not too big of a drain on society. whether that's a carer to make sure they don't waste away, life saving medication or medical devices... even some goddamn plastic. disabled people who need plastic to live have to argue that they're worth the imagined environmental impact in a world of mass pollution caused largely by abled people. like people with no stake in it will still say that disabled people who 100% need a small amount of a resource to live are not worth that meagre amount. it sounds crazy to the people who haven't experienced this, right? like people are boggled all the time by stories of minor ableism because they're unaware that this is a constant belittling message that disabled people are told: that they are second class citizens. that they don't have the same right to life as abled people

now this is my disability blog but im still a multifaceted person. as such i'd like to use what I've explained so far to relate to other disabled people, especially white disabled people, that this message of an inherent lack of worth is something people of colour have been experiencing as well for their whole lives. and we have tried over and over again to communicate what understanding that is like.

“Everything is ableism these days”

Have you considered the fact that disabled people seeing ableism in every day language and life says more about society and its culture/history than it does about disabled people as a whole?

hey if you're not a mobility aid user, and you want a simple way to make public spaces more accessible to those of us who are, i have a tip for you:

push in your chairs when you get up from tables.

when people don't push in their chairs, people with bulky aids like wheelchairs and rollators can't get through. also a lot of people who use canes have wider gaits than able bodied people, and having a chair in the middle of their walking path is a real obstruction. while some of us are able to push chairs out of our way, a lot of us are not, and wind up boxed in/out because somebody didn't push in their chair.

so if you want to do something simple that can make a big difference in terms of like. navigating an outdoor food court or a cafe or what have you. push in your chairs.
