A Swing At Love

San Francisco

May 1965

The aroma of cooked meat filled Sakana's nose as she walked out the big top. A dinner scented with hints of rosemary and basil was sure to make everyone's mouth water, which meant that their recent show had been a success.

Life at Big Top Serendipity was all Sakana could ever want, and need. All the familiar faces, sounds, and smells blessed her with the feeling of home; a place where she truly belonged. Everyone here-- from the performers to the teachers that traveled with them to even the preachers who provided Sunday service-- was family even if not by blood.

"Hello, Sakana! Dinner smells good today, don't it?" one of the clowns greeted her. His face was bare of all the colorful makeup that was usually adorned on clowns.

Sakana gave him a friendly smile. "It does. Mama was be the one making it."

Following the aroma to the cirus cook house while greeting other passing performers and staff, she peeked inside to see both her parents at the grill. They chatted happily, ever deep in their conversation.

Sakana's parents had always been her perfect image of what a truly happy couple was in this day and age, not those posters she saw of housewives in colorful dresses lighting their husband's cigars. A couple was supposed to be equal in both mind, body, and soul-- which her parents were.

Their coupling was unusual, and even subject to some nasty remarks from others, but they were persistent in their attraction to each other. Many of Serendipity's performers were grateful for the couple's kindness and generosity. Not many employers were like them. They ruled over the cirus like a benevolent king and queen.

"Mama, papa." she called out.

Selene Mizuiro and her husband both turned to see their eldest daughter peeking in through the door.

Mr. Mizuiro let out a big hearty laugh. "Guess you're ready for dinner?"

Sakana nodded. "So is everyone else."

Dinner began once everyone was seated around several tables. Tonight's was a special treat from Selene and her husband to everyone as a reward for the work to make this week's shows successful.

Ryujin, one of Sakana's younger brothers, stuffed his mouth full, earning a scolding from the youngest daughter Mizumi.

"Where to next?" he asked with a mouth full of food.

"New York City. We'll be leaving tomorrow afternoon." Sakana spoke in between eating. "Which is sad, because the weather here is much better for Papa's health."

Mr. Mizuiro had been Big Top Serendipity's ringleader for as long as Sakana and her siblings could remember. His booming voice and charms wowed any crowd in all the cities they traveled to. Nowadays it was beginning to feel like it was time for those days to be behind him. A terrible cough that overtaken him over the last few weeks, which Sakana suspected to have been caused by the frigid temperatures of a recent trip to Russia.

"Nonsense! I'm perfectly fine-" Before Mr. Mizuiro could finish, the damned cough returned. Only this time more worse than before.

"Papa!" Sakana rushed to his side. She managed to get him to rise back up and sat him down at her table. "I don't think New York is safe with all those factories up there."

A place like New York was too dangerous for the current state of Mr. Mizuiro's health, and everyone was afraid it was going to get worse.

Later that night as Sakana and her siblings were helping with the cleanup, their father's voice boomed just like it did when he was presenting their show. Only this time, it was in anger.

"I'm not giving it to you!" Mr. Mizuiro's eyes burning with anger stared back at the man in front of him.

All four Mizuiro children-- Sakana, Ryujin, Hisakata, and Mizumi-- peered into the room to see their parents seated across from some businessmen.

Not them again, Sakana felt her heart sank at the sight. For years, this particular group of businessmen had been targeting Big Top Serendipity in an effort to buy it. However, Mr. Mizuiro had been resistant.

"Mr. Mizuiro, I'm afraid you don't have a choice. Especially with the current state of your health." One of them, most likely the leader, gave Mr. Mizuiro a sarcastic chuckle and smile. "Besides, other circuses aren't pulling shows like yours."

"And it should stay that way!" Mr. Mizuiro jumped up out his seat with Selene holding his arm. "I will never sell my circus! Is that understood?"

The businessman simply and quietly nodded as he stood up. "I don't think you understand how you're messing with."

"No you don't-!" Mr. Mizuiro fell to his knees, violently coughing and hacking. Both Selene and the children rushed to his aid. Even the water they had on hand wasn't enough to quell his coughs.

Fear filled Sakana's heart when blood splat out her father's mouth. The more he coughed, the more crimson sanguine poured. It couldn't be-- was her beloved father close to death?

"I have good news and bad news."

Sakana snapped out of what felt like a trance. Her mind couldn't let go of the sight of the blood and the horrific realization of her father's health.

"What is it?" Selene asked.

"Good news is that Mr. Mizuiro is okay." The doctor pursed his lips bracing to deliver the bad news. "However, he has bronchiectasis."

"That's not too bad, right? Don't you got a cure for it?" Hisakata was ever enthusiastic, though even he likely knew that no such thing existed.

"Son, I wish, but no. There are treatments but no real cure."

Dread overcame Sakana as tears swelled in her eyes. After years of unforgettable and fantastical performances, Mr. Mizuiro, ringleader-- no, king of the famous Big Top Serendipity, had fallen. She could tell the rest of her family felt the same way from Ryujin holding Mizumi in a comforting embrace.

"I recommend he get back home immediately before his health worsens."

"We will. Thank you, doctor." Selene's face read of devastation. Time ceased to exist whenever they were together, and as some cruel punishment, it finally caught up to him.

"What does this mean, mama? Will we have to go back home?" There was no enthusiasm, or hope, in Hisakata's voice.

"Yes. I'll have to tell everyone the show's cancelled-"

"No! The show must go on!" Mr. Mizuiro's booming but hoarse voice blasted from his room. "We can go home once we're done!"

"My love, I can't risk you getting sicker the more we travel. Yes, the circus is our life, our home, but how can my heart be one without you?" Selene took his hand in her own. Her hand gently cupped his face. "I think... I think it's time to let it go."

A saddened sigh left Mr. Mizuiro's mouth. It was true that time had finally caught up to him and exposed his own mortality. He was always the stubborn type, which allowed him to become as successful as now. But he could be stubborn no longer, his body wouldn't allow it.

"I guess it is. Selene, my darling, will you and our children finish the tour? For me?"

"Of course, Papa." Sakana joined Selene at his bedside. "We'll carry on for you and everyone else."

Mr. Mizuiro smiled warmly at them, providing a small flicker of joy in a dark time. "That's my girl. Now, listen to me very closely."

Everyone gathered around in anticipation for what he had to say.

"When the media gets hold of this, those sharks will be ready to feast on our home. And when they do, they'll try to disguise themselves with good intentions. Don't fall for it. Don't let them take Serendipity away from us." Mr. Mizuiro warned them.

Sakana knew good and well that those greedy businessmen would pounce now that her father would be out their way. But neither she or her family would surrender. No matter what it took, they'd continue to fight this war.

"We won't, Papa. You can believe it."

"That's my children. The next time I'll see any of you is back in Japan."

Sakana nodded, though the eerie warning wouldn't leave her mind. These businessmen were dangerous, some with ties to the Mob. She'd have to be more diligent and controlled than ever. One wrong move and they'd never be off her.

"I'll tell the others the news. Hopefully some of the guys will pack your things and take you to the airport." Sakana held her father's hand.

Mr. Mizuiro gave them one last big smile before leaving for the night. The show would go on-- just without its king.

Guess who recently thought of a TGAMM/Totally Spies crossover?

Great. First, I thought of a TOH/Doremi crossover, then, I thought of an Amphibia/PPG crossover, now, I just thought of a Ducktales/Alvin and the Chipmunks crossover! What is with me and crossing over Disney trios with non-Disney trios?

Rephrased the last line! Reblog this version!

Am I the only one who thought of Romani/Japanese Himiko Toga? I mean, think about it. Toga is vampire-coded, and vampires are associated with Transylvania, which has Romani people.
