❝I hate coffee shops. Always filled with people rushing, taking selfies, or them bloody hipsters with their long scarves. I need to just start making my own damn coffee.❞

“wut?” douglas asked as he turned to looked at the other man before looking ahead at the line that was indeed full of hipsters (whatever those were) and impatient people. “is this wut ‘s always like?” he asked, having spent very little time in coffee shops. he didn’t even drink coffee, he just wanted a chocolate drink.

darren let out a derisive scoff at that, eyes rolling as he went off into the kitchen to start fixing cocoa for douglas. he didn’t bother responding to his assumption that darren’d had things easier in school; duggy was lucky enough not to remember what a complete deadbeat their father was, the many times he’d get into fights at school cos someone started talking about his family. sure, things had been easier for daz…to a degree, he’d just learned early on to pretend that things were better and fine around others – otherwise he’d fucking drown as duggy was doing.
“she didn’t stop talkin’ to ya, you withdrew. she tried comin’ round to the estates after mum passed…you wouldn’t leave your room.”

“i was 8 years old, i was doing the best i could but it was a pretty fuckin’ traumatic time,” he huffed, putting his chin on his knees. he wasn’t like daz, wasn’t used to pretending and never had to. “can’t blame me for walling off after that. when i went back i wasn’t just the freak wit no parents. ev’one either looked at me with disgust or sympathy and afta a while s’all the same. you had friends, were older, could fake the smile, could pretend.” duggy had only been bullied, only known pain, only been made to suffer further. he didn’t have fond school memories, that was why it had been so easy for him to move.

He stepped closer and she leaned away instinctively. It was nothing against him – Jane knew he was only trying his best, after all – but to a girl who’s only just above five feet tall, anyone seems a giant, especially when they’re a stranger.
She shook her head at the offer of a hug, but mumbled something that sounded like a thank you as she drew her hands over her face, trying to force herself to calm down. Jane simply didn’t have time to break down right now. She had to be home before midnight. Those were the rules, and she knew the penalty for breaking them well.

“You’re not making me uncomfortable,” she said. Because that much was true. Though her hands shook and the tears – irritatingly – would not stop, he was helping. “I just– I don’t know, I need… I need to get home.”
He backed away slightly and punched in for a Lyft in his phone. It wasn’t really money he had to spend, but this was a special circumstance and Daz had to understand, or maybe he’d just take the yelling later, accept that it was the cost of doing what Duggy knew to be right.

“I ordered us a ride. Make sure to get you home safe, ya? I’m not good with... I don’t know what to do with... women. Just me and my brother at home. Haven’t exactly had to deal with much cryin’ less it was me. You’re gonna be alright, tho? I wouldn’t want ta just drop you off a mess, doubt your parents would much like that.”
