a similarity between yu sifeng, ying yuan and li xiangyi, apart from all played by cheng yi and all masters of spitting blood, is that they all have hidden identities of ethnic minorities who are targeted by the state. yu sifeng is secretly a bird demon wanted dead by heaven and the sects, ying yuan is secretly an asura kept alive and raised as a heavenly immortal, li xiangyi is secretly of nanyin blood who the emperor wants dead. they are also all almost the last of their family. the whole process of having to hide your ancestry and culture lest society and the state turn on you... being a child of two cultures and having to choose which one is safest for you to survive depending on the situation... man i relate. i relate SO hard. but also i'm wondering if is just a more common xianxia/wuxia trope or if like spitting blood and sexual tension it is a Cheng Yi Character thing

saw someone on tiktok talking about their interpretation of nobody’s soldier, saying that it was about Hozier being uncomfortable with the image the public has about him, the whole “woodland fairy king” or the “irish jesus”, “written by a woman” thing, and while he hasn’t spoken about this i think it’s important to remember that artists are also just… people, like yes they are talented and amazing but they aren’t perfect, they aren’t mythical creatures, they are intricate and have multiple layers, and they are entitled to a private life out of their art persona, so bear that in mind when interacting with them and their art.

The scariest thing about viserys is that he, and men like him, do appear to be harmless on the outside. He’s soft spoken, seems to be a bit clueless and naive, he’s generally nice to people and may even seem like a “family man” but behind closed doors you finally get to see his true colours. He has a violent side but he hides it very well. We don’t see his ugliness very often but when we do we see him hold his wife down while she is butchered for what’s in her womb not only against her initial wishes but as she continues to beg and plead for him to stop this, and this was after she earlier pleaded with viserys not to make her go through another pregnancy if this one doesn’t result in a healthy son, but for all his talk about how much he loved her and grieved her, he saw her as a broodmare and killed her like one. Then we see him grooming 15 year old Alicent and maybe it went over some peoples head because he wasn’t pleasant towards her and kept their interactions innocent until he announced their engagement without asking Alicent if she wanted it, then he goes on to rape her continuously throughout their marriage and we see her called from her bed in the middle of the night after she had just had a baby, a scene that is very clearly a rape scene where he shows no regard for her comfort or wellbeing and she ends up pregnant 4 times in 5 years not because he wanted heirs but because he was attracted to her teenage body and her innocence that he took from her. We also see him lash out at his sons that mostly ignores. His son loses an eye and he’s only concerned about “rumours” spread about his grandsons. “Look at me” he screams in the face of 10 year old Aemond who just lost his eye and is in severe pain. Then he moves on to scream in 14 year old aegon’s face. Alicent begs him to please do something, “please Viserys, he’s your blood” and in this scene it’s important to note that the boys did not incriminate their mother when their father was yelling, trying to incite fear into them, they didn’t want their fathers wrath redirected towards their mother.

Viserys showed aggression multiple times behind closed doors, he was misogynistic in the way he viewed women and yes that includes Rhaenyra who he only really started to indulge to ease his guilt of killing her mother. He used aemma as a broodmare and put her through multiple miscarriages and stillbirths before pregnancy killed her and he didn’t even allow her to die with dignity, in the way she wanted to. Publicly, He showed love towards Aemma and cried over her death. He allowed Alicent to have some power by letting her have a seat on the council, only after years of rape and forcing her to become a mother of 4 because he was attracted to her when she was a teenager. Both Rhaenyra and Rhaenys reference Alicent as prisoner of her circumstances in both her early years and late years of marriage. He is shown as a doting father and grandfather to Rhaenyra and her kids but ignores the children he forced Alicent to have unless he wants to yell at his sons for something and his favouritism of Rhaenyra overshadows his early treatment of her, ignoring her and underestimating her as a worthy heir until daemon mocked his dead son. Viserys could have represented a certain type of terrible man, the kind that hides behind his harmless good guy image. The show could have addressed that he is just as bad as his brother daemon but with more self control and enough denial to think of himself as a better man. Deep enough in his own deception to convince us that he was the good brother when he’s just another brand of bad. They could have addressed the damage he did to his wives and children. They could have told the audience that yes you also fell for his act and the deceptive portrayal we gave you because men like viserys will have you fooled in real life. Instead the show, which claimed to be a feminist retelling of martins work made this weak king and horrible man be praised as good husband, father and king. Never allowed his suriviving wife or daughters or even his sons be angry at him or dare to blame him.

In the wake of the travesty of poor writing that is HoTD, I will recommend The Decameron, for anyone who needs to be in the company of complex female characters that are allowed to be villainous and, more importantly than that, consistent in their storylines.
