DISCLAIMER: this stupid story is a silly, self-indulgent mess that would require a lot of hard work to make it, um, fit for human consumption. It was my little brain break between finishing The Queen of Lies and restarting The Court of Rogues. It may not ever get finished. 🤷‍♀️ So, uh, you're forewarned. 😇

What's It About?

Take a drink every time you see an element Kate's used before in other stories. 😅

Evyn, a schoolteacher, impulsively embarks on a journey in an effort to escape the chokehold of her small village, overbearing uncle, and inevitable (and unwanted) fate as someone’s happy little wife. It’s risky, of course: wild animals roam the woods, and she still doesn’t know the source of the mysterious lights that gleam through the darkness at night. However, she gets more than she bargained for—the forest is not what it seems, nor are those mystical yellow lights.

The Fae, creatures of legend, are real.

And they’re coming for her.

✨ “Get married? Me? Never!” Jonathan Edition: Very Not Straight But Try Telling That To My Religious Zealot of a Father

✨ Jealous twin will NOT let his sister win control of their clan like she wins everything else, damn it (footnote 1)

✨ Emo loner who can’t go home (on pain of death) just wants these weird dreams about some random-ass human to please STOP (footnote 2)

✨ “So, like, you're kind of hot … but you’re, uh, my enemy?? But I haven't figured that out yet?? And also, do we, like, have weird sexual tension, haha, or is it just me? Hahahaha! … But seriously, do we?”

Character Vibes

Evyn, human, orphaned as a child and raised by her aunt and uncle. Now a schoolteacher who sees yellow lights no one else can see.

“My heart cannot be captured. I intend to die an old maid, surrounded by papers and books. Good afternoon!”

Jonathan, human. Evyn's cousin, a clerk. Just truckin' on through a life he finds endlessly tedious and unsatisfying.

“Cecil’s a soggy piece of tree bark in a hat,” he said before he could stop himself.

Ah, Jonathan Garnet. A man who gained a single speck of favour with his impossible-to-please father…and promptly hurled it into the wind.

Dharan, Fae. Exiled from his clan years ago for murdering another Fae.

The Fae leapt up, standing straight and bending his knees as if to run—or perhaps pounce. One hand hovered over the stolen knife on his belt; the other, he extended to her.

He looked away from his foe to meet her gaze, uttering a single word:

“Run.”

Rennith, Fae. Heir to his clan but competing for the title against his twin sister.

He was a man, it seemed, but those eyes bespoke something much more ancient—of man, but not man himself. Silver hair, an impossible shade, framed a face sculpted into sharp angles, as cold and pale as if it were made of ice.

A Fae creature forged in primordial fire, carved from gold, silver, and mother-of-pearl.

And the answer is: the lie is number three! You guys got it right! Scarlet knows his real name (his actual name is Thom/Thomas) but he prefers to use his childhood nickname (Scarlet) as a name instead. It was a choice he made mostly for the sake of anonymity (keeping them more easily hidden from potential bounty hunters or assassins sent after them) but also because he actually really preferred his nickname over his actual name.

Scarlet did indeed save Nimwen on the day her father was executed, sparing her from a similar fate by taking her away from the crowds before the King's knights could get to her. They ran away into the woods of the realm, where they survived the next decades as outlaws, trying to not be captured by the bounty hunters and knights sent to finish the job.

Scarlet was orphaned at a young age, but his intellect and curiosity for knowledge got the attention of a young noble - Nimwen's father - who took him in as his apprentice and adopted him as his son. Nimwen's father saw Scarlet's potential and hoped the boy could also be his successor in his studies of magic, while Nimwen followed a more political route (if she chose so when she grew up). But it wouldn't be longer until their lives fell apart - with Nimwen's father being wrongfully executed for treason and the siblings forced to run away.

I'll go with Sam Delaways from Enchanted Illusions for this one, because I want to talk more about him and because I think you guys will really like this character! (:

Are you named after anyone?

"Nah. At least not that I know of, that is. I like my name just fine either way, though I don't think my parents put that much thought into it."

When was the last time you cried?

"Pretty recently, but why do you wanna know? (chuckles mischievously) You little rascal. I'm not telling ya that."

Do you have kids?

"No, but I take care of my little brothers - I'm all they've got since neither of our parents are around anymore. They're little kids, so one could say I'm raising 'em. Or at least that I'm trying my best to."

Do you use sarcasm a lot?

"Only when I'm trying to be funny - or when I really wanna annoy Augustus (laughs). That uptight necromancer needs to get a sense of humor and quick, haha. I never use sarcasm to be rude, though, there ain't no need for that - unless someone really deserves it. In that case, I can make an exception."

What is the first thing you notice about people?

"If they're dangerous in some way or another - and if they are, I try to find out ways to avoid gettin' in their way. I also try to notice if they're confident or shy, if they're arrogant or humble if they're temperamental or calm - these things can tell me a lot about whom I'm interacting with."

What's your eye color?

"Dark grey, I think."

Scary movies or happy endings?

"I tend to prefer stories with happy endings, though I like my fair share of scary stories, on occasion. Depends on my mood, mostly. I don't have much time to spend reading anymore, though I like to, and I ain't ever gone to the local theaters to see any of the plays and operas, but I hear they're awesome."

Any special talents?

"I'm not sure, haha. I think I'm quite good at climbing things, and I can hold my own in a fistfight if I need to - but I hate having to. I'm good at navigating the city and using my surroundings to get around faster, and I can build things pretty quickly. Otherwise, I know how to do a lot of stuff, but I dunno if they'd be considered 'special talents' - shoe-shining, fixin' boats, selling newspapers and matchsticks, that sort of stuff. It's what has kept us alive so far - cause the factory sure ain't paying me enough for that."

Where were you born?

"I was born in the outskirts of Ansburke. Y'know, the capital city of our land, and all that. But we moved to Strystead after our parents died - more factories willing to hire a nonmagical teenage street rat, you see. I dunno if it was a good plan in the long run, but it's too late to be thinking about that though."

Do you have any pets?

"Nah, can't really afford to right now. But if I could I would love to have lots of dogs, because they're adorable! Maybe one day I will."

What sports do you play?

"I'm not really the sporty kind. Seems like a waste of perfectly good time and energy for me. I've seen some rich folks playing a game called cricket, I think - and it looks very fun, I'd like to try it one day! I also know how to ride a horse, and I know people consider horseback riding as a sport, but it isn't something I do that regularly so I don't think it counts."

How tall are you?

"I think I'm average height, compared to my friends."

What was your favourite subject in school?

"Never went to school, but I think I would have liked history or magic classes, those seemed fun!"

What is your dream job?

"Ain't got time for dreams in Strystead - dreams don't pay your debts, neither can dreams put food on your plate at the end of the day. Learned that the hard way a long time ago. Currently my 'dream' - if you could call it that - is to pay my debts and get the heck back to Ansburke before these factories finish breaking my spirit too, but unfortunately, I don't think I'm gonna be able to do that any time soon. Eh, that's life though."

(Supernova Initiative) - my sci-fi heist story!

Jack Tithus - An older brother who absolutely did not sign up for the utter mess that his life has become and is about to lose what patience he still has left. Also is an intergalactic thief.

Cassiopeia Tithus - Someone shouldn't have left this absolute menace of a teen unsupervised, and now she (and her robots) will make it everyone else's problem.

Vesper Foxx - Unstoppable and slightly unhinged Cyborg, with a truckload's worth of The Trauma Lore, on the Path to Revenge, will stab people unprovoked if she gets pissed off.

Aleks Keldora - Top 1 worst pilot anyone could ever meet, thinks he's great. Commits identity theft as a weekly pastime as a bonus, and is also the most clueless smuggler/mercenary alive.

Artemis Zreeth - Edgy Emo Boy 2.0 with the power of Anger and Teen Angst, who takes everything way too seriously, almost always makes things weird, and thinks sarcasm is a personality. It isn't but he has yet to realize it.

Noctus - Tired and slightly depressed secret agent gets assigned to supervise this bunch during a mission and Regrets His Life Choices while also having an Existential Crisis Moment.

Pax Stellaryn - Adopted Kid with Daddy Issues thinks he can fix his life with the Power of Friendship and Rulebreaking. Fails successfully (his life is in shambles but he did make new friends.)

Ethean Mirannir - Has spent his entire life being A Perfect Soldier and has a lot of reservations about breaking laws, but not about bending the rules. Doesn't know if he should be scared or impressed with the speed his adoptive brother messed up their lives.

Meridian Shardd - Basically a Newborn Robot in a Grownup's artificial body. Has literally no idea what is going on but is down for the ride. Is having the time of his life.

(Of Starlight and Beasts) - my high fantasy adventure story!

Corah Stormryder - Knight protagonist trying to fix everyone's problems but her own inadvertently gets into even more trouble when her Mommy Issues come back to haunt her along with a little something otherwise known as The Consequences of her choices.

Arammys Lochllain - Amnesiac star boy trying to figure out what The Fuck Is going on unlocks new traumas every week. Also, cue the occasional Jekyll and Hyde personality split/existential crisis.

Eidan Delythen - Depressed Lone Wolf attempts to run from his past by doing the exact opposite of what he'd planned to do while also being Ruthlessly Sassy about it.

Nimwen Raynsel - Traumatized embodiment of a dear in headlights tries to get the world to fuck off from her doorstep while struggling with making things worse.

Tomasa Emberi - Dragon Girl has the time of her life pranking her friends through shapeshifting while facing past issues she really didn't want to face.

Masen Mavven - This absolute idiot who thinks stealing/lying amounts to any kind of therapy or emotional fulfillment. Drowns his angst with wine and Bardic Angst.

Kyran Mavven - Another absolute idiot, who thinks lying to everyone about his true identity and past is a sustainable approach to academic life.

Maryon Haell - Incredibly bored spy girl in training absolutely lunges at the prospect of adventure but finds out halfway through that maybe she should've read the fine print.

Florynce Everfall - Unhinged undead teenager who is simultaneously incredibly eerie and adorable at the same time, puts an unhealthy amount of trust in talking trees.

Rin - An absolute asshole/bastard of a man who begrudgingly and incredibly slowly learns to "be nice" and not use manipulation and stabbing as a coping strategy for childhood traumas, while also being an absolute gremlin teen who should not be unsupervised for more than 5 minutes.

Leora Tallin - Child Soldier grows into a military commander who has no sense of humor and is trying to save her people from the mistakes of a bunch of rich idiots from another realm.

Scarlet - Young man forced to grow up too fast tries to change his identity while absolutely not addressing any of his own past traumas. Also has a neat pet hawk.

Elias Mavven - Pirate King on a Revenge Quest against the people who ordered his execution, tries to not have a breakdown at the family gathering. Is 100% over the twins' bullshit.

Lord Bastien Ilythos - Perfect prince of darkness trying to uphold legacy learns that, huh, 🌟his entire life might be a lie🌟and Is Not Having It.

Thank you so much for the ask, @kaylinalexanderbooks! This was one heck of a crazy month for me! But here we go (:

My current hairstyle! It's still short - because I can't stand my hair when it gets too long - but it's grown into a style I've been wanting to have for a while but hadn't quite be able to achieve it. I'm super stoked with how it looks like right now though!

My ability to tell stories and create characters - it still amazes me how, through writing, I can be able to create entire new worlds out of thin air!

The way I look after getting ready for a brand new day. It's nice to be able to like how I look after being judgemental about myself for so long!

This is not necessarily about myself, but I like laughing. I like watching something funny that makes me laugh and feel genuine joy after a tiring day!

My glasses! I really like the way I look with my glasses - probably because I can't see how I look without them very well and because I've worn glasses for so long that it's pretty much a part of my identity now. I really like them!
