It Begins (again.)

According to my first ever fanfiction.net account, I began writing at the tender age of eleven.

😳

yikes.

That sure doesn't feel right, but I'm 21 and have over a decade of writing experience. I was writing with disneycreate.com was active...I used to write stories on there using the text feature. Sometimes I wouldn't even draw: I'd just write text on an image and post. Now I'm grown. I've written several short stories and have more on the back-burner. I'm on my third draft of a novel that I'm truly proud of. I'm creative, I'm intelligent, and I haven't had the gall to curate a space where where the only thing you'll find is me and my craft. So that's the next phase, I think.

I want to create. Everytime I've had the impulse to purge my blog, I snag on all the things I'm deleting: but honestly, most of the stuff doesn't matter. Most of it is just...a blip. And that isn't bad! But I think it's good to private everything. So I can look. So I can look back. For me.

Things are weird. Things have been weird. I think it's more critical than ever that I create, because how else am I going to ground myself? How else will I let off steam? I'm immune to massages and the truth is: I only ever feel relaxed with my partner, or when I've got a nice drink in my system. My rotten luck: I'm in a long distance relationship and alcohol is the absolute worst solution. So yeah: the only time I really feel whole and good is when I'm creating.

t's time for a new ritual. One that collects my craft all in one place. One that lets me observe my creative growth over time. One day I'd like to publish something. One day I'd like for people to eat up my stories. I think it'll happen. I think I'm pretty great.

If you're seeing this: thanks for being here. It means a lot.

I have the face of a dead girl.

This isn’t to say I look like her. I have her face. I move her lips, her nose, her long, thick lashes. I didn’t choose it. My parents selected it. Hunted her down, took everything above her collarbone and ran. I don’t have her eyes though. I’ve seen an image of the girl. A simple, colored photograph beneath a bright red label stating ā€œHAVE YOU SEEN ME?ā€ She had brown eyes. I have blue.

I’m five-foot ten.

Writing Notes: The Five-Factor Model of Personality

Culture is transmitted to people through language, as well as through social norms which establish acceptable and unacceptable behaviors which are then rewarded or punished (Henrich, 2016; Triandis & Suh, 2002).

With an increased understanding of cultural learning, psychologists have become interested in the role of culture in understanding personality.

The 5 Personality Traits According to this Model

OPENNESS TO EXPERIENCE

Refers to a person's imagination, feelings, actions, ideas

LOW score: More likely to be practical, conventional, prefer routine

HIGH score: More likely to be curious, have a wide range of interests, be independent

CONSCIENTIOUSNESS

Competence, self-discipline, thoughtfulness, goal-driven

LOW: Impulsive, careless, disorganized

HIGH: Hardworking, dependable, organized

EXTROVERSION

Sociability, assertiveness, emotional expression

LOW: Quiet, reserved, withdrawn

HIGH: Outgoing, warm, seeks adventure

AGREEABLENESS

Cooperative, trustworthy, good-natured

LOW: Critical, uncooperative, suspicious

HIGH: Helpful, trusting, empathetic

NEUROTICISM

Tendency toward unstable emotions

LOW: Calm, even-tempered, secure

HIGH: Anxious, unhappy, prone to negative emotions

Applicability

The idea that personality can be described and explained by five traits (OCEAN) has important implications, as does the fact that most personality tests were constructed and initially tested in Western countries.

Western ideas about personality may not apply to other cultures (Benet-Martinez & Oishi, 2008).

2 Main Cultural Approaches for Researching Personality

Etic traitsĀ - considered universal constructs that are evident across cultures and represent a biological bases of human personality. If the Big Five are universal then they should appear across all cultures (McCrae and Allik, 2002).

Emic traitsĀ - constructs unique to each culture and are determined by local customs, thoughts, beliefs, and characteristics. If personality traits are unique to individual cultures then different traits should appear in different cultures.

Using an Etic Framework

Cross cultural research of personality uses an etic framework and researchers must ensure equivalence of the personality test through validation testing.

The instrument must include equivalence in meaning, as well as demonstrate validity and reliability (Matsumoto & Luang, 2013).

Example: The phraseĀ feeling blueĀ is used to describe sadness in Westernized cultures but does not translate to other languages.

Differences in personality across cultures could be due to real cultural differences, but they could also be consequences of poor translations, biased sampling, or differences in response styles across cultures (Schmitt, Allik, McCrae, & Benet-MartĆnez, 2007).

Personality Test/Measure Used: The NEO-PI

Most of the cross-cultural research on the Five-Factor Model (FFM) and Big Five (OCEAN) has been done using the NEO-PI (and its subsequent revisions; i.e., it is an assessment tool developed to measure the 5 dimensions of personality according to the FFM) which has demonstrated equivalence, reliability and validity across several cross-cultural studies (Costa & McCrae, 1987; McCrae, Costa & Martin, 2005).

Research using the NEO-PI found support for the entire Five-Factor Model in Chinese, Dutch, Italian, Hungarian, German, Australian, South African, Canadian, Finnish, Polish, Portuguese, Israeli, Korean, Japanese, and Filipino samples, in addition to other samples (McCrae, Costa, Del Pilar, Rolland, & Parker, 1998).

NOTE

Personality tests rely on self-report which is susceptible to response bias like socially desirability responding.

To evaluate this possibility, McCrae and colleagues (2005) recruited students from 50 cultural groups and modified the NEO-PI to be in the third person (i.e., he, she, his, her):

The research participants were asked to complete the form on someone else that they knew very well (McCrae et al., 2005).

The same 5 factors emerged in this study.

These results provided empirical support for the FFM and for the use of self-report instruments when conducting cross-cultural personality research.

There was no reason for the students to respond in a desirable way because they were answering questions about someone else.

reasons to write fanfiction (I'll start):

share a cool scene that popped into your head

evoke a particular emotion the canon makes you feel

song made you think of a character or idea from canon

make people feel the same way about a character you do

make dolls kiss for fun

explore ideas the canon hints at but doesn't do anything with

traumatize characters and make them suffer

coddle characters and let them rest

had an insane idea for a crack ship and now everyone needs to know

the author of the canon was wrong and must be fixed

use familiar characters to explore your own ideas and plotlines

canon is too short and you need to wallow in the universe of the story

Cats and dogs ship dynamics are fun, but consider this: Mischievous Cat vs Stern Guard Dog. Hyperactive Orange Cat vs Tired Old Dog. Dumbass Cat Vs Smart Dog. There's so many variety, and yet the one I see most are Golden Retriever vs Black Cat.

Butterfly as symbol of metamorphosis from plain to beauty. Being touched by a butterfly is luck. Butterfly effect being a small change that changes the whole thing. Butterfly symbolism is cheff kiss

Now, imagine: butterflies as allegory of trauma. Butterflies looks beautiful, but some species like Purple Emperor — the male ones specifically — eats corpses. The female ones eats rotten fruit. If butterflies swarm you, you're rotten. Similarly, it also means cycle of rebirth, which can be twisted to cycle of abuse.

Heads Up, Seven Up

I was tagged by @darkangel319 (here)

Ahaha, that's a lot of tags there... I had a long writer block due to school and almost forgot I had Tumblr. I'm finally back to writing. This particular writing is a rough translation from my native languange of a mini short story I wrote, titled "Final Act."

Rules: Post the last 7 sentences that you wrote.

You keep your grip tight, cold metal reflecting the stage lights. Aiming in near darkness is never a problem. Not after years of experience. The bullets hiss, and when it hits, the Princess collapses on the Prince's lap. Under the dim lighting of the stage, her dress withers with blood. The red looks nice with white, you think. A scream from the prince and the theatre breaks out in panic.

Aha, I'm not sure who to tag here, this is my first time doing this... @evgenyoduvan @badeyaseptember and open tag to anyone else, I guess.

I really, really don't like "words to use instead of said" lists because they often give the "if you use said – an invisible tag word that people in general don't notice it's there at all but still serve its purpose of indicating dialogue – you're the worst writer in human history".

A lot of writing tips, I feel, can relate a little to the rest of life.

It's really easy to get caught up on a small plot point and mull over it, editing and editing that one point again.

But that won't get you anywhere.

Even if it's not perfect, you have to keep writing past that or else you'll never end up making progress.

That embarrassing thing you did five years ago? That one comment? They suck, and they can hurt or keep you awake. But it's a minor plot point, and you have to step over it and keep writing. Even if out of spite.

It is quite possibly one of the hardest things to do in both writing and in real life.
