One of the many things that concerns me is the catastrophic amount of anxiety and depression in kids today. I care about everyone who has these afflictions but kids are defenseless. Adults have years of experience at this. Most who have survived to become adults have either become fatigued to it, to one degree or another, or they have developed defenses against it. The only defense kids have is peer support and drugs. I don’t condone drugs but I’m certainly not going to condemn those who use drugs. The pain of anxiety and depression can be more than a person can bear and if you have no other means of relief then that is what you’re going to turn to. Parents who warn their kids against drugs because drugs can kill are clueless. Many kids w anxiety and depression don’t care if they live or die. They want relief one way or another. If they die in the process then that’s just fine w them. It’s not fine w me though. My heart fucking breaks for these kids. I love all of them as if they were my own. I read their blogs and I see what they’re going through. They want so badly to be happy and normal. Their blogs consist of their hopes and aspirations interspersed w their expressions of sadness, loneliness, fear and desperation. A lot of parents listen and feel as hopeless for their kids as their kids do. And, unfortunately, a lot of them don’t. These kids largely want one thing: love and acceptance for who and what they are. Is that so fucking hard to give them?

So, I sit here wondering and worrying on this Friday afternoon, what kid is going to overdose at a party tonight trying to forget the pressures of school? What kid is going to sit alone tonight w tears streaming down their face while they cut themselves? What kid is going to get pregnant tonight hoping to be loved? What kids heart is going to get ripped out tonight because their boyfriend or girlfriend doesn’t love them anymore? What kid is going to going to get trashed tonight for coming out? What girl is going to allow herself to be bitch slapped and humiliated tonight just so she feels like someone cares? What kid is going to collapse from malnutrition tonight after starving their self all week just to fit in yet another size smaller? What kid is going to runaway tonight because they can’t take anymore beatings. What kid…no, how many of these beautiful kids are going to die tonight because of one of these things and more?

To those parents who abuse their kids in whatever way, for whatever reason and to whatever degree: You played God and gave your kids the gift of life and all the gore that goes w it. They are now the most important responsibility you have for the rest of your life. The time for self indulgence is over. Life can be a horrifying experience. Your most important job is to protect them from the horror and to give them as much happiness as you can. Sit down and talk w them. Listen to them. Be compassionate and try to understand them. Try to help them in any way that you can. No matter what age they are, hold them and let them cry and cry w them. Let them be angry and be angry w them. Let them have hope and have hope w them. Tell them that you love them. They need this. They need you.  ~ Trabue Gentry
