Hob makes a game of giving a different answer each time people ask him about his husband’s profession.

“He’s an artist,” he tells his colleagues at the faculty ball and they nod along — after all, it fits the bill, all the black clothes and references to obscure works of art and literature.

“Don’t tell anyone, Mrs H, but he’s actually a monarch in incognito,” Hob tells their old neighbour lady, who solemnly swears to keep it secret although there’s nothing subtle about way she curtsies to Dream whenever they meet in the hallway (Hob finds it even more amusing the regal nod of acknowledgement Dream gives in return each time).

“He’s an architect in a big company,” Hob says, sipping his beer with his friend.

“He’s a bloody dreamer like you, isn’t he?” Constantine asks dryly although her smile is fond.

Hob chuckles, an amused gleam in his eyes.

“You have no idea.”

Then one day Dream shows up to Hob’s class with Matthew on his shoulder.

It’s only to be expected that students give him odd glares, especially when Dream takes out a pack of Marlboro from his coat, lights one and gives it to his raven.

“Don’t mind him,” Hob says, for a moment diverting his students attention from Dream’s little stunt. “He’s an ornithologist he knows what he’s doing.”

For an average girl from New Jersey Rose takes it well that his grand-uncle is an eldritch entity.

It takes her more time to get over the cognitive dissonance of seeing her favourite history professor, every students’ father figure, the most innocent, Dr knitted-sweater-every-day Gadling, the Mr Rogers of Imperial College to casually smooch Dream. With the tongue.

“Hi babe,” he says cheerfully. “Is that your niece? Nice to meet you, dear, I’m—”

Hob falls silent, watching his student, eyes widening comically.

“Miss Walker?”

Hob flushes a deep shade of red.

“Ruined it.”
