Well Now I'm Crying Again.
Well now I'm crying again.
thinking about tom hagen and sonny corleone and how it never mattered to tom that sonny was a violent man, it didn't matter what blood was on his hands because he was always kind to tom and had been his brother and his protector and loved him like family in a way the other corleone kids never did...

Something that I keep thinking about in The Godfather is was Vito expecting Tom to repay his debt in some form or another? In the book it's clear that Vito does almost nothing unless it benefits him, either now or in the future so was he holding the debt that Tom 'owed' him for taking him in as an homeless, starving orphan and giving Tom a home and education?
He doesn't force Tom to work for him, that's his decision but neither does he show Tom any real affection until he agrees to do so. Then and only then does he embrace him for the first time and treat him more like a son.
Part of me thinks that Vito was just returning the favour that was granted to him but then considering that he stores up favours for the future, I can't help wondering if he was holding a debt over the head of a child and he was always going to have to pay a price for Vito's kindness?
Tom sassing his brothers is my favourite thing.
"Sonny was white-faced with anger. “That’s easy for you to say, it’s not your father they killed.” Hagen said quickly and proudly, “I was as good a son to him as you or Mike, maybe better"
From The Godfather novel by Mario Puzo.
Speaking of tiny details, I just noticed that in the scene with Tom and Tessio, that Tessio not only reaches for his gun but that his other hand also reaches for Tom. I wonder if he was going to take him hostage to try to bargain his way out of there or just blow his head off?
