Mini Askbox Coagulation #17.5

mini one (mobile users can scroll past)

I don't know if you've noticed but your ask box coagulations are in a weird order, they go "13, 15, 14, 15" so I think there's an extra 15 in there somewhere. This isn't important, just a little heads up!

Oh man, I didn’t even notice that because I don’t check my own Tumblr that often, I have no idea how that order even happened, and it implicates I made 2 counting errors when numbering these more recent ones somehow... Anyways, the order should be fixed now, thanks for the heads up!

Hi Steel! So this isn't /really/ an ask but YEAH (Sorry I'm a little shy in this one) So I've been following you around SC, Tumblr, YouTube and all and I must say that I am a HUGE fan of your artwork and it makes me so happy to see how amazing your artwork (and not just your artwork) has advanced. You have an amazing sense of humor and your personality is really good. You're a really open and sociable person! I don't have that long to live left, but for now I hope I can see you advance again

I really apologize for not responding to this immediately, partially because, I was not really sure how to respond to such a message...

I thank you for reaching out to say something so heartfelt towards me. At the time I received this message, I was very touched and I still am. I’m happy you have followed me for awhile for my art and continue to want to see me advance with it.

I think there’s a disconnect between how I see myself and how people see me, because I’m definitely not as sociable as you say I am. I guess I might come across as such based on how I tend to act towards others when I say something to people, but in reality I’m somewhat introverted/shy, and especially in person, I’m pretty quiet.

I truly hope that the situation of you not having that much longer to live, isn’t the case for you. I don’t know what condition you are going through, or suffering at this moment, but I hope you are able to make a recovery from it. (I am assuming it is a terminal/fatal illness of some type. I might be wrong though.)

Anyways.  I wish I knew who you are so I can thank you properly. But, nonetheless, thank you for your kind and thoughtful comments. I really appreciate it.

Askbox Coagulation #16

I am slow at answering asks. This is a small pile of asks, the rest I’ve gotten in the recent-ish timeframe were all answered privately.

Hi Steel! So I heard you've moved now, and I was wondering.., If I were to send you something, what address should I send it too? I found your resume with an address last month, but now knowing that you've moved///....

Hm... I wish you had asked me this off anon because I don’t feel comfortable putting my home address out there in the open for lots of people to see. I do indeed have a resume that lists my address ( for career purposes), but it’s currently outdated- so I will need to update that. Thanks for reminding me! I will see to updating that soon.

Can Magnus do cool things with snow? Considering that snow is frozen liquid.

Yup! He spawned an entire snow-covered Christmas 'tree’ out of light and snow, in the last comic I made of him.. if you want to know what else he can do with it, he can do similar things as he can with soldified light. A few examples including making ice sculptures or stairs, freezing over things... Instant ice cream?

How long does it take to finish an art piece? If possible, list all kinds that you seem to do.

Depends on how focused I am/how detail the art is? I’ll try my best to list what I can do. I dunno why people are interested in my speed because I’m slow in terms of posting any form of art.

Art Speeds (approximate)

Pixel Art. Time is variable depending on details, animated or not, etc. 10min-1 hour

Comics. depending on details again, 20min for sketch comic up to 5 hours for full color/polish.

Digital Paintings/Illustrations. 30 min-1 hour for simple character/simple BG, 5 hours-16 hours for anything above and beyond that depending on detail

Hand-Drawn 2D Animation. Several hours for a short clip. Full color animation for 1 minute will probably take me a week or two.

Video Compositing (assuming images are ready), several hours to a day or two.

3D Model. depends on what I’m modelling. A vehicle will probably take anywhere from 1-3 hours. Architecture also depends on exterior or interior. Several hours. Characters is relatively untouched (allergic) territory for me, so I dunno.

3D Animation. a semi-complex short will probably take 1 -3 days to piece and render together? (this is assuming the model is rigged and everything is set up, like lighting and environment )

Hope this satisfies your curiousity...

Anonymous said: As a curious reader of your webcomic I was wondering why Galvan has white bangs on most of your tumblr works?

It will be explained, don’t worry. You will find out later in the comic! (When I continue it, sigh.)

Why what you do doesn't seem important, but actually is

When I was in college, I had a wonderful mentor/professor who helped me learn lessons that keep being relevant as I go through life—which, if you ask me, is the tell-tale sign that he was a great professor.

One of those lessons was that it could be almost impossible to establish self-worth, and to recognize self-acheivement. After we’ve learned how to do something—ANYTHING—really well, it seems almost like second nature for us to do it. Even if we’re producing quality work, we look at it and think ‘well, sure this turned out well but anyone out there could have done it if they put the time in.’ We forget that WE are the ones that put the time in to learn the skill, and that WE are the ones who now have something special for it.

Here’s an example:

This professor told me about a time when he was at a conference giving a talk. After he was done with his seminar (which was probably about something awesome like chaotic oscillators) he went on to listen to other professors and industry professionals give their talks. There was one he was sitting on, thinking to himself ‘WOW this guy is cool. Here he is building a genetic search engine (or some other incredible topic) while I’m just dorking around with chaotic oscillators.’ but then, after the talk, my professor went up to him. He wanted to tell him how neat he found the subject and the guys research… And when he got up there, the guy went ‘OH WOW you are that professor with the chaotic oscillators! I saw your seminar and I was so excited by it! You’re really doing something incredible while I’m just dorking around with genetic search engines.’ And thats when my professor realized that JUST BECAUSE THINGS SEEM COMMON TO US DOESN’T MEAN THAT THEY ARE COMMON. Our skills, our lessons, and our experiences are unique to each of us, we just are looking at them through the fogged glass of ‘been there, done that.’ Others won’t be looking at them through that same glass.

If you ever see artwork and say ‘wow I wish mine was that good,’ or read a story and say ‘gee I wish that I could write like that,’ you have to also remember that there is probably someone out there saying the same exact thing about your work to themselves. It might even be the exact same person who you’re envying.

Please never forget that your experiences have made your own work into something valuable. YOU have put the time into it. YOU have something unique. YOU have something that it would take somebody else at least as long to duplicate, and it would still never come out the same way that you do it.

We fixate so often on comparing ourselves to other people, but we judge ourselves the most unfairly. We look at what they have, and we fret about what we don’t have, and we forget that we aren’t defined by what we don’t have.

Your work is important, and it is only going to get more important from here.

What Truly Can Be Defined As Reality As We Know It?

What truly can be defined as reality as we know it?

Perceptions are different, from person to person, from species to species, from entity to entity, experienced so differently, so intricately, that it can never be replicated.

"I have to seek the truth.”
