"you really suck at goodbyes" DEAN WINCHESTER FROM SEASON 5 YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING
they really let dean parent a child with another man (to the point that dean calls him "OUR kid") then had him divorce and reunite with said male coparent, let the male coparent confess his undying love for him in one of the most earnest moments in the series history, in a way that "cuts to the core of his self doubt" and then said..... no the hero of our show will not ever get to live a fulfilling life😌😌😌😌 we'd rather he be dead than admit hes queer
okay cool cool cool
You know the feeling when your life is just not going great and the last month has been the most frustrating month of your life, because you move into your new apartment and nothing works and now is has to be fixed, so you move in with your mother in law and you work to much so you can’t really deal with all of it and on top of that it’ christmas so you have to participate in traditions and buy presents and also it’s dark outside constantly, and now you finally have a day of that you of course has to spend buying gifts but you just can’t get out of bed because for once there is nothing you have to do right this moment so instead you’re layibg in bed and feeling depressed and empty and nothing can make you feel better. And you can’t get up to just buy presents because tbh you really need a shower first and some food, because you’ve been awake for several hours but you don’t feel hunger and you again also live with your mother in law and she doesn’t have any breakfast that you don’t have to prepare first (no cereal or milk) and you can’t get your boyfriends help because he is working today and he is also doing stuff all the time so you barely have any time together and when you finally do see eachother you want to be happy and not discuss all the things going on in your life that you just don’t want to talk about or think about, you just wanna go and leave it behind and just go on holiday but no you don’t have any money, so you can’t and you also cannot find a new apartment because all you can choose between is either too small or too expensive because again you have no money and you don’t want to live like this anymore you just want to be happy and have a home where you have room for your stuff and where yu can breathe and stop worryign about money all the time.

Not Stupid: El's POV Over the Seasons Holds the Answer to the Fate of Mileven & Byler
You packed your walkie right?—Because you know I’m gonna steal Cerebro from Dustin and call you so much that you’re gonna have to turn it off, right? - Mike to El in 3x08
Joyce has this telemarketer job. She’s always on the phone, Mike won’t stop whining about it. - Dustin in 4x08 from El's POV
Initially, I thought it was kind of funny how both of these quotes came from an 8th episode, with Dustin being involved, and the focus being Mike's annoying ass.
Then, I realized something else, which was that El heard both.
And this got me thinking about El's perspective in general over the seasons, and how with or without her powers, she has this tendency to hear things that people don't always know she's hearing. And not only that, but we have this repetition of El and how she's not 'stupid' spanning multiple seasons with different characters, from Hopper, to El herself and even Nancy (directed at Mike).

So I'm going to try to go through a few of the main instances (there's no way I'll cover all of them), that involve El hearing/overhearing.
To be clear this is a pro-byler post, so if you are not interested in anything that humors the possibility of byler endgame, scram!
Season 1
1x02: The Weirdo on Maple Street
After finding El in the exact spot Will went missing, Mike, Lucas, and Dustin bring her to Mike's basement to try and come up with a plan, all while El is in the bathroom nearby.

This shot sequence is telling us that El heard the boys talking from the bathroom. We see the door open. We hear the dialogue carry over from where they are, to where she is.
So, although El's probably hopeful this could be a safe place to stay as opposed to running, I think there's a basic level of awareness here. She heard that it was Mike who made the plan, and she knows it involved getting rid of her so that they could go back to finding Will.
Which is why I think, looking back, El would know from this memory alone that what Mike said in his monologue, was bullshit.
And if that wasn't enough, then Mike lashing out at El at the end of 1x03 after they found Will's body, only to forgive her the moment she used her powers to prove that Will was still alive at the beginning of 1x04, did not exactly work in monologue-Mike's favor either...
1x08: The Upside Down
Ironically, while I was writing this post, a similar post was made, where it acknowledged how El overheard a conversation between Jonathan and Nancy all the way from the gym, despite no one else with her being able to hear them and without her even going into the void to do so. If this is true, El most definitely heard ALL of the moments listed on here.
I mean, shit. Maybe we don't even need to be asking 'what has she heard', but 'what hasn't she heard'?...
Season 3
While there are more examples in s1-2, I'm just going to jump to s3 because I can already tell this post is going to be ridiculously long.
3x05: The Flayed

Here we have an almost identical parallel to the first scene mentioned, only this time it's Max and El in the bathroom in the basement, with the boys outside and Mike and Will's bickering being overheard.
The main difference between this scene in 3x05 vs. the one in 1x02, is that the bathroom door is closed this time. And so yet, even though it would've made sense for the girls to not hear the boys in this instance, they use this opportunity to tell us that they did.
"You guys do realize we can hear everything you're saying, right?" Idk. That just feels a little too prophetic to me...
Maybe this scene, also from 3x05, might have a similar significance:

Tbh I think them turning that scene from Mike's basement into a joke, was the writers using subtext to plant this idea into our heads, of just how absurd it is for Mike to think El can't hear him, even under circumstances when it's obvious she can.
And with how much this happens, this moment in particular, them outright mocking Mike's obliviousness, was very likely meant to foreshadow the inevitable. And it's probably why El's going to figure it all out and accept it, even before Mike does.
I also think this scene foreshadows Mike's monologue, but let's save that for the end.
3x06: E Plurbius Unum
Which brings us to the most iconic overheard moment in the series: Mike blurting out that he loves El, in front of everyone. Well, everyone, except for El of course. Or so we thought...

I want to point out that Mike looks almost fearful upon realizing El might have overheard him, while El on the other hand looks slightly disappointed that Mike didn't seem to want to repeat what he just said, to her directly.
Even still, at first glance, I do think there was something nice about this moment from El's perspective.
I mean, the first time she overheard Mike talking about her, his plan involved getting rid of her. But now, this time she's overhearing that his plan involves making sure she comes out alive, because 'he loves her and he can't lose her again'?
How else was she supposed to interpret that?
I honestly think that she viewed this moment as directly contrasting how she believed Mike felt about her when they first met. Like, she's probably thinking, 'okay, maybe he didn't love me from the beginning, like so many of the romances I've watched over the last year made me believe love was meant to be. But he loves me now??' I think she had already accepted this and was on board with accepting it. She just had to figure out a way to actually get him to commit to it; to commit to her.
Also might be worth noting that this scene started something like this...

3x08: The Battle of Starcourt
Although the audience (and Mike) didn't know at the time whether or not she could hear him say he loved her, El goes on to confirm it directly in the finale of season 3, with Mike looking equally as uncomfortable as he did when he thought she might have heard him the first time.

... and we all know what follows.
Now I want to circle back to that first quote I mentioned, because Mike told El he would call her so much on the walkie at the end of s3, only for us to get no mention in s4 of Mike using Cerebro to contact El.
While it's possible they could've talked at least a couple of times on the walkie, I'm willing to bet it wasn't near as much as he had implied it would be.
Because what we find out in s4, is that El and Mike kept in contact via letters (all ending with 'from Mike), with no mention of the walkies.
In El's new room in Cali, she had a shrine dedicated to Mike, which had the walkie sitting right in the middle, just waiting for him to call her. Because technically, in order for them to have kept in contact via the walkies, Mike would've had to be at Dustin's using Cerebro, or having stolen it (like he said he would).
We also get this line in El's letter to Mike: "I'm so excited to see you, it's hard to breathe! Are you excited too?" with no response...
And that just feels so tragically important for what they're trying to tell us, without outright telling us.
Because it didn't have to be this way. They could've opened s4 with Mike and El talking back and forth on the walkies, all 'crazy' in love. But instead they chose to only give us El's thoughts and feelings about everything, through her most recent letter to him.
And might I remind you, like 85% of that letter was lies...
Although El doesn't see this, what the audience sees is Mike crumpling up her letter and rushing off to school. Other than some set-design hints, we don't really know for sure what Mike's thinking. From what we can see, he doesn't have anything remotely paralleling to an El shrine in his space. This combined with a lot of the other details, makes it all feel pretty intentional.
Also, either coincidentally or ironically, directly after the scene of Mike leaving for school, we get Dustin running late for school because he was talking to Suzie using Cerebro (meaning if Mike wanted to... he would!)
I think what might help us better understand all of this, and what often gets overlooked by everyone (other than maybe bylers), is that Mike said this before El told him she loved him and kissed him.
This happened in the s3 epilogue, where we got a 3 month time jump after the events of Starcourt Mall.
Mike and El had literally been broken up for three months before this conversation unfolded in this direction. So for all we know, Mike could've been interacting with El as a friend at the start of this scene when he made that promise to keep in contact with Cerebro.
But, did he actually keep that promise?
And if he didn't, then why?
Which brings us to the next thing El probably heard...
Season 4
4x02: Vecna's Curse
Well, what about us?
What?
You're mad that I didn't talk to you? Seems like you've made it super clear that you're not interested in anything I have to say.
That's just not true.
You called maybe a couple times. It's been a year, Mike. Meanwhile, El has like a book of letters from you.
That's because she's my girlfriend, Will.
And us?
We're friends- We're friends!
Well we used to be best friends!
Then maybe you should've reached out more. I don't know? But why is this on me? Why am I the bad guy?!
(*mouths*) But--
(*sighs*) Let's just... Let's just find her. Okay?

Though it was never confirmed whether or not El overheard Mike and Will arguing from in the closet (at Rink-O-Mania), this shot sequence is eerily similar to all the other scenes with El overhearing. So we can basically assume they're telling us to read between the lines here.
Although the boys were a little further away at the beginning of their argument, (again) considering this recent revelation, it's possible El could've heard them say a lot more than we think.
After Mike walks off and Will follows him, we cut to El, looking in the exact direction where Mike and Will were just arguing, visibly upset.
Regardless, I do think her emotions here were more so tied to the humiliation of what just happened with Angela, and less that she's actually upset about Mike and Will's melodrama.
Hell, if there's anything she's thinking about when it comes to those two, it's probably that Mike may not only bored with her (bc he hasn't been able to say/write i love you), but also Will as well now, who Mike hasn't written any letters to, nor called much on the phone to talk to since they moved away (according to what El just overheard).

We then see El turn her attention to Angela, who she can hear talking from outside the closet. And low and behold, Angela is standing roughly the same distance from the closet as Mike and Will were just moments ago.
What I find interesting about this scene is that when El overhears Angela, her instinct is to beg her to tell Mike that it was all just a joke and that they're actually friends...
Like, even after everything that just happened, El wanted to try to keep the act going. She would rather keep lying than have to face the reality of whatever is about to follow (and boy oh boy, we know she's not the only one).
To be clear, I don't think El necessarily suspects anything romantic going on between Mike and Will at Rink-O-Mania.
But she's not stupid either. She heard what she heard and she's going to remember it.
Which brings us to one of the most important pieces of the puzzle...
4x08: Papa

I do believe El's biggest concern here is still with the more major things going on, ie. the safety of her family and friends, combined with the end of the world and all.
And yet, even still, El's not stupid.
Remember, Mike told her directly that he would call her so much, to the point where it would be her that was annoyed?..
And so you would think that would warrant at least one mention by the writers in s4, maybe even Dustin himself talking about how annoying it's been to have Mike always stealing Cerebro to call El, allowing this to all come full circle.
But no. Instead, what we get is this subtle revelation that Mike actually spent the last year annoying Dustin over the fact that the Byer's line was always busy... A line that Mike could've only been calling to talk to Will... A line Mike spent calling time and time again, even without getting an answer most of the time, and then ended up complaining about it to Dustin nonstop after he found out the reason (unseen 4x01 footage, gimme).
All this was happening while El was waiting for him to call her over the walkie, to follow through with what he said he would do.
But because of what she overheard during their argument at Rink-O-Mania, El also knows that Mike didn't correct him when Will accused him of only calling a couple times... So, now she's probably wondering, at least subconsciously, "Why didn't Mike correct Will?"
And like, let's be real? Why are the writers even having El find this out in the first place, and in this way: without Mike knowing she knows or telling her himself? And even more importantly, without Will knowing about the truth either?
Again, while I don't think El's connecting everything regarding Mike and Will, at the exact moment each of these earlier instances was happening, I do however think it was all meant to build up to her having that realization eventually.
Because, really, it can't just be a coincidence. It can't be.
4x09: The Piggyback

Now, could this shot be a hint that El is starting to figure it out?
I don't know.
Honestly I think it could be a combination of several things.
It could mean El is thinking about what she overheard during Mike and Will's argument at Rink-O-Mania, combined with what she heard Dustin say. Maybe she's also now starting to pick up on the fact that not only Will has been acting weird, but also Mike. Maybe subconsciously, this is El becoming 'open (sign above their heads) minded ('Mind fight? Righteous!')' to the concept of what all the evidence is pointing to (Byler).
Or it could be foreshadowing El eventually going into Mike/Will's memories later on, just like she did with Max's, to save them and also as a result, find out the truth?
Or it could be foreshadowing something else still yet to be seen in s5? After all, the drawing depicts El presumably smiling, while 'thinking' about these two boys...
So maybe it's hinting at Mike and Will being together sometime in the future and El supporting it, seeing as the girls hair is long, meaning it would have to be a time jump if it was El, right?
Though, again, it could very well be several things at once, or maybe even just one, I am still willing to bet at least one of these is on the right track.
Then, before Mike's monologue, we have Will specifically asking El a series of questions, and her responding to him.

El can hear Will.
Which makes what follows that much more devastating.

What I find so painfully ironic is that, this entire post has been dedicated to scenes which have been leading up to this very moment.
Mike is finally telling El he loves her, to her face!!!--
Wait... Except, nope. Never mind. Not to her face.
El is literally in a mind, within a mind, as Mike just blabbers away while she chokes helplessly, clearly unable to respond, and with him still asking her an unsurmountable number of times whether or not she can hear him...
Now, remember when I said that scene of Max and El in the bathroom could've been foreshadowing Mike's monologue? Well--

I know it's sort of on the nose neck, but those Duffers are sick individuals geniuses.
Even if El wanted to respond to Mike's monologue, after she was no longer choking, and he was literally begging her to open her eyes, she doesn't...?
And if Mike had finally just said all the things El's wanted him to say for a while now and she has the chance, hell, to at least let Mike know she heard him, but instead she makes a point not to...?
And we're getting all of this juxtaposed with shots of them and everyone they love losing horribly...?
How else are we really supposed to interpret that?
How else are we supposed to interpret them not allowing us to even see the aftermath of Mike's monologue?
How else are we supposed to interpret El avoiding Mike and Will near the very end of the season at Hoppers cabin?
It might be a bold hill to die on, but a lot of these hints indicate to me that El knows.
Not saying that she knows everything per say, but she's connecting the dots as we speak.
Honestly, all it'll probably take at this point is El seeing the painting and finding out Will lied, for it to finally all click for her.
So I wouldn't be surprised if when El finally breaks up with Mike in early s5, only for him to be confused over why his (wrenched) love confession didn't work, that she'll respond dryly with something along the lines of, "I'm not stupid, Mike."...
